Page 15 Basic Scanning Overview The EPSON Perf ection 600 scan ner software must be accessed from the host application into which you plan to import the scann ed image. Once you have accessed the EPSON Perf ect ion 600 software, yo u can preview and manipulate images prior to scanning them into your applicat ion.
Basic Sc anning Page 16 Basic Steps to Scanning Perform t he fol lowing steps to scan an image f rom your EPSON scanner into a host application. 1. Access the EPSON Perfecti on 600 main window. 2. Place the origin al to be scanned on the scanner docume nt ta ble.

If any adjustments are needed, change one or more of th e following settings to obtain better result s. Scan Mode The scan mode indica tes how a n image should b e scanned.
Basic Sc anning Page 19 The Batc h Mode optio n is available only if your host applicati on can open mor e than one image at a time. For example, Batch Mode is “grayed out” (not available) when scan ning fro m Adobe PhotoDeluxe, since it cannot open multiple images at one time.
Basic Sc anning Page 20 Transparency When you’re scanning transpar ent originals, such as film negatives, the light must shine through t he original instead of reflecting off it. If your original is a negative, see Scanning Negative s for mor e information.
Basic Sc anning Page 21 Saving a scanned image as a color image re quires 24 times as many bits (i ndividual cells of computer memory or di sk storage) as saving an image as a black and white line art image. For best result s, match your selection of scan type with th e type of original.
Page 22 Advanced Scanning The EPSON Perfe ction 600 scanner software provides advanced t ools that let you modify an image’s cont rast, brightness, color, and tone bef ore scanning. This following topi cs are described in this sect ion: ◗ Working with Origin als ◗ Sizin g the Scanned Image ◗ Adjusting I mage Qual ity TWAIN.
Advanced S canning Page 23 Working with Originals Changing Image Orientation If you pl aced an image on t he scanner document t able incorr ectly, you ca n rotate the imag e in the EPSON Perfecti on 600 software rather than moving the original on the scanner.

Advanced S canning Page 28 Sizing the Scanned Image How much computer memory or disk space will be required to stor e an image depends on several factors. This section describes these factors, t he relationship between physical size of an image and the image’s storage requirement s, and how to adjust both of these values.
Advanced S canning Page 29 black and white line art requ ires only 1 bit per pixel. Scanning an original as a col or image requires three times the storage as scanning it as a grayscale image, and 24 ti mes th e storage requirement of a black and white line art image.
Advanced S canning Page 30 Keep the above in mind when resizing or scaling an image if the file size of the scann ed image is a concern. Changing the Size of the Scanned Image When you scan an image using the default set tings, the output image is scanned at th e same size and proportion as the origi nal image.
Advanced S canning Page 31 The Output box in th e main window displays the size of the fr amed origina l (input size), the scale percen tage, and size of the scanne d image (outp ut size ): Maintainin.
Advanced S canning Page 32 When proportiona l scaling is used and you change the width or height of an image, the Per fection 600 software automatically adjusts the other dimension to maintain the sa me width-to-height rat io. For example, if the original image frame size is 3 inches wide and 4 inches high, and you increase the output width to 4 .
Advanced S canning Page 33 resize the frame in th e preview area, t he Perfection 600 software will automatically adjust the scale percenta ge to maintain the output size. Resize an Image with the Mouse To resize using the mouse: 1. Click on a fr ame if t her e’s more t han one displayed.

Advanced S canning Page 38 Using the Densitometer Monitor The EPSON Perfection 600 densit ometer displays the densi ty of an image — how many pixels are in a given area.
Advanced S canning Page 39 Setting the Densitometer Measuring Point In addition to having the desitometer display values based on the mouse posit ion, you can also fix the measurement poin t to a specific locati on on a n image.
Advanced S canning Page 40 Manually Adjusting Ima ge Contrast The EPSON Perfection 600 Aut oExposure feature automatically a djusts the contrast of the se lected image. However, if you are not satisfied with the result, you can manually adjust the image’s contrast.
Advanced S canning Page 41 (The mouse pointer displays as a black triangle when the Alt or Op tion key is pressed.) The software makes you r selecti on bla ck and adjusts all lighter t ones accordingly. Adjusting Image Appearance Using Tone Curves When an imag e needs adjustment , it is usually because the image is t oo dark or too light.

Advanced S canning Page 51 From the Filter drop-down list , choose one of the following: Sharpen The scanner so ftware has a sophisticate d sharpening f eature that automatically shar pens an image (makes it less blurry) by increasing the contr ast (distin ction between dark and light tones) between adjacent pixels.
Advanced S canning Page 52 such as losing resolution or sharpness. To counter the effect of the screen process and tu rn the dots back into a smooth er image, set the filter opti on to Descreen.
Advanced S canning Page 53 The best resolu tion for a scanned image d epends on the type of image you are scanning and your fi nal output device. The foll owi ng tabl e shows the best scanning resol utio ns for the most common applications: The higher a resol ution you select, the larger the resulting image file.
Advanced S canning Page 54 The same original scanned at 72 dpi create s only a 1.3 MB file. Large fil es t ake longer to pro cess and print , so consider the practical limitations o f your computer system and hard disk drive when selecting a resol ution.
Advanced S canning Page 55 For Professional Output For commercial printer output, multi ply the lines per inch (lpi) t hat the pre ss pri nts (your printer can provide you with t his information ) by 2 to determine your scanning resol ution. For example, i f the lp i is 150, t ry scanning at 300 dpi.
