Setting Up Your Scanner 5 Unlock and Initialize the Scanner Befor e conn ecting the s canner to a po wer sourc e, you must re lease the tra nspor tatio n lock on the back of the scanner. Before conne cting the scanner to your compute r, follow th e steps belo w to make sure the scan ner is operating properly.
6 Setting Up Your Scanner The scanne r lamp c omes on w hen it is p lugged in, but goes into sle ep mode when it has not been used fo r 15 minu tes. The l amp comes back on when you scan.

8 Setting Up Your Scanner If You’re Runnin g Windows 98 . . . You may be asked to insert your Windows 98 operating system CD-ROM during the scanner installation. Please have this CD-ROM handy, in case it is ne eded. If yo u don’t have your Windows CD-ROM, see page 57 in “P roblem Solving.

You can use the buttons in conjunction with t he EPSON Smart Panel, which has a convenient on-screen control p anel.

To save your document s without opening them, click Save . Enter a name and folder in t he File N ame and Path box, o r leave the de fault name .

44 Scanning from Start to Fin ish Scanning Somethin g That Doesn’t Fit Under the Document Cover The self-adjusting scanner cover allows you to place th ick documen ts on the docum ent table glass without removing the cover. If your docum ent is too th ick to fit un der the c over— such as a photo in an album—you can remove the document cover.
45 Using the Transparency Unit This section includes basic informatio n on installing and using the transparency unit (B813172) for the EPSON Perfection 1240U. The transparency unit, also referred t o as the film adap ter, lets you scan negative o r positive film strips and sl ides on your scanner.
46 Using the Trans parency U nit 4. Place th e transpar ency unit on the documen t table gl ass so that th e hinges face the rear of the scanne r and it fits on the docume nt table glass. 5. Connect the transp arency unit connector (the arrow on t he connector faces up) to the sca nner’s o ption in terface.
Using the Tra nsparency Unit 47 You can load transparencies in the film holders or yo u can place them directly on the document table, as described i n the following sect ions. Three film holders are included with the transparency unit. To p lace film in the holders, see the instructi ons for the type of film you’re scanning.
48 Using the Trans parency U nit Loading Brownie Size Film Brownie size film is 2.4 × 3.5 inches (6 × 9 cm). Insert the film in the Brownie size fi lm holder, base side facing do wn. Then place the fil m holder on the document ta ble. Align the upper left corner of the fi lm holder wit h the upper left corner of the t ransparency unit.

53 Scanner Maintenance This secti on gives y ou basic maint enance instructio ns and tell s you how to transport your scanne r safely. Cleaning the Scanner To keep your scanne r operating at its best, you should cle an it periodically. Be fore cleaning, unplug the po wer cord.

Problem Solving 61 Scanning P roblems The file size is too big. Adjust your scan se ttings. Try selecting a lower resolution (dpi), or scan o nly part of the ima ge. Your scanned image is faint or has gaps. ■ Check the bri ghtne ss set ting. Decrease the software or driver’s brightne ss sett ing.
62 Problem Solving Your scanned image is blurred or disto rted. ■ Check the p ositi on an d conditio n of your document. Make sure the document is placed fl at against the scanne r’s document table gl ass. If only part of the ima ge is blurred, part of your document may be wrinkled or warped.
Problem Solving 63 The edges of the docum ent are not scanned. ■ Check the po sition of yo ur source document . Adjust your document’s position so that the ima ge is w ithin the g lass ar ea. ■ The document table has non-reada ble areas around the edges.
64 Problem Solving ■ The dark area around film, such as the frame of the film ho lder, is pe rceived as whi te — alte ring the exp osure of t he scann ing area and caus ing you r scan s to appear darker.
