1 Introduction The D-Link DP-300U Print Server is print server that con nec ts to your Ethernet/F ast Ethernet network anywhere yo u wish to locate print er services.
2 Because the DP-300U is ve ry portable and i nexpensive compared to a PC-based print server, and P rint Serv er connects to your file ser v ers throug h the netw ork, printer s c a n be dep lo yed to locat io n s of maximum convenienc e to users.
3 External F eatures Port Connectors The DP-300U h as two pa rallel po rts and on e USB p ort located on its b ack panel. The port s are conf igura ble using t he Web Conf iguration Interfa ce or the p rint server’s Telnet int erface. The Pr int Server ’ s Web co nf iguration permits users to configur e settings thro ugh the web browser.
4 Rea r Pa ne l Network Cable Conn ect or The Print Server ’s rear panel featur e s an RJ-45 co nnec t or for co nnec t i on to 10Base-T Etherne t cabling or 100Base-TX Fast Ethern et cabling (whic h should be Ca tegory 5 tw iste d -p air cable).
5 Front Panel LED Ind icato rs The front panel of the print server feature s f ive LED indicators: Power S tea dy green conf ir ms that the Pr int Server is po wer ed ON. Link/A ct S teady green confirms t hat th e Print Server has a good con necti on to the Et hernet or Fast Ethernet network.
6 Setting up the DP-3 00U Inst alling t he Print Serv er W ARNING : Configuration problems ma y result if the Print Server is powered up without first e sta blishing it s network c onnection. Follow this proc edur e to av oid complica tions at the config uration s tage .
7 and flashing operation. Immediately after power-up, al l five of the green LE Ds should illuminate s teadi ly for se veral second s. Then the LPT1, L PT2 and USB L ED indicat ors should light OFF . Irre gularit y of any of the three L E Ds during these LED test s may mean th ere is a problem with th e LEDs themselv es.
8 Getting Started Below is a sampl e networ k u sing the DP-3 00 U. The DP-300U has a bu ilt - in Web-based ma nagement f eature t hat allows u sers to ea sily co nfigure and manage mul ti ple print queu es through TC P/IP . For a list of p r int ers th at are compat i ble with th e DP-300U, ple ase see the Appendix in thi s manual.
9 Using PS-Wizard This chapter will introduce yo u the installation and oper ation of a usef ul software program – PS-Wizard . Auto-Run Instal lation Insert the Inst allati on CD-ROM into your com puter’s CD-ROM drive to init iate the Auto-Run progr am.
10 PS-Wizard To avoid the conflict in yo ur network, you can use PS-Wizard to ch ange the related settin gs of your print ser ver (such as the IP address) after finishing the in stal lation of PS-Wizard on your PC.
11 2. Clic k Next> in the welcome window of InstallShield Wizard . 3. Specif y the de stinat ion locat ion by clicki ng the Browse… button. Otherwis e, leave the default set ting an d click Next> to continue.
12 4. You may enter a new fol der nam e in the Program F older fi el d if you want to change the d efault name . Otherwise, y ou may l eave the defaul t se tting and click Next> to go on the ins tallation.
13 5. The Install Shield Wi zard starts to install the so ftwa re, a nd th e Prog ress bar indicates t he inst allation is proceeding u ntil the following win dow shows up.
14 Using PS-Wizard PS-Wizard , suppo rts fo r Windows 20 00/XP/2003/V is ta, is a simple and useful tool for you eas ily adding a printe r on your computer in order to quickly st art your printing task without any co mplicated configurat ion.
15 Print Server : This fi eld allows yo u to ma nually discover the connect e d pr int server and to do further c onf iguration of the print serv er that is s elected from the list.
16 LAN : Y ou may also to spec ify dyn amic o r s ta tic IP address for you r prin t server . Then click Apply button to implemen t the new se tting. Port Information : This is the main function of the PS-Wizard for you to easily add a pr inter on your computer .
17 The wizard provid es t h ree ways for yo u to se lec t pr inter dr iver : 1. Show current installed drivers: Y ou may select this option, “ Show currently inst alled driver s ”, to chec k i f th e same prin ter driver al ready existe d for us e.
18 printer in the Network Printer Name box and enable this pr inter as the def ault printer by checking the Use this printer a s the defau lt printer for Windows-based programs box. After you did the verifi cation and conf i guratio n in the following window , click Next> to continue.
19 When the following window shows up, yo u may do print test by clicking the Pr int Te s t P a g e to check if you can do printing normally . If yes, click Finish to exi t th e install ation window and now you m a y start your printin g tasks.
20 Using the Web Con figuration Home T o begin managing the DP-3 00U, simply launch the browser (e.g. Internet Explorer 6.0 used in this ma nu al) you have installed on yo ur computer and direct it to the UR L address: dlink-xxxxxx, w her e xxxxxx are the last six digits of DP-300 U’s MAC addre ss.

Yo u may clic k a desired link from the bar, to display it s s ubmenu and sel ect a desired op ti on listed in t he le ft c olum n, a nd th en the corresponding content will sh ow up in the center column.
22 SETUP > Print Server Setup The Print Server Setup screen allows yo u to modify the Print Server Name and Port Setti ngs , as below show s. D-Link does not reco mmend chan ging these settings unless asked by y our ne twork ad ministrator .
23 Print Server Name In this field, you c an conf igure the ba s ic inform at ion of pr int server . The basic information contains a name of the print s erve r , assigned in Serv er Name box, and a locat ion for t he p rint serv er , assigned in Location ( optional) box.
24 SETUP > LAN Setup The LAN Setup screen allow s you configure the local ne twork settin gs of print server . Please not e that thi s section is optional and you sh ould not need to change a ny of the se ttings here to get print server up and running.
25 SETUP > Printer Setup The Printer Setup screen allows you install the prin ter dr i ver s for the pr i nter current ly conne cted t o your pr int server . Network Pr inter W izard Click Next to do wnload and run a wind ows wizard progra m to in stall a netwo rk printer o nto your compu ter .
26 The above screen is the Ne twork Prin ter Wizard. Click Run , and i f a sec ond window appears as below click Run again. Select th e printer required , and th en click Next to continue.
27 The wizard provides three ways fo r you to select printer driver: 1. Show current installed drivers: Y ou may select this option, “ Show currently inst alled driver s ”, to chec k i f th e same prin ter driver al ready existe d for us e. If not, you may tr y t he next m ethod.
28 2. Select from man ufacturer list : Check this option, “ Select from manufacturer list ”, to manually select your printer from drop-do wn menus by brand and model. Click Nex t> to continue w he n you find a desired driver . If n ot, try t he last wa y ( Have Disk ).
29 3. Have Disk: Click Have Disk to brin g up the following wi nd ow . Insert the manufact ure’s install ation CD -ROM to ins tall the printer dr iver .
30 After selec ting th e printer dr iver , the wizard will ask you to conf irm your selectio n again in the follow ing wind ow . Beside, you are allowed to edit th e name of th e printer in the Networ.
31 When the follo wing wind ow shows up , you may do print test by clicking Print T e st Page to check if yo u c a n do pr i n ting norm ally . I f yes, click OK to cl ose the PS-Wizard dialog box . If yes, t hen click Finish to ex it th e i n st alla tio n win d ow and now y ou may s t art you r printin g tasks.

33 ADVANCED > Advanced LAN The Advanced LAN screen allows yo u to further network sett ing of print server . It is not recommended not to change the settings unless instructed to modify the settin g b y your network administrator . The Advanced LAN screen cont ains th ese fields: TCP/IP , Microsof t Network, and AppleT al k .
34 TCP/IP This fiel d contains fo ur op tions th at all o w yo u to con figur e th e TCP/IP sett ing : DNS Server Address , UPn P , Mac Bonjour/Rendezvous , and Second HTTP Port . UPnP : This opti on allows you to en able or disable UP nP func tion.
35 ADVANCED > User Access The User Access screen allows you to create and maintain an authorized list of users t hat are allo wed to access th e print server . User Ac cess By configuri ng the Enable Authori sed User List option ( Ye s ), the user in t he User List is pe rmitte d to access th e print ser ver .
36 ADVANCED > E-Mail Notification The E-Mail Notificat ion screen allows yo u to assign an e- m ail address to the print ser v er , so that yo ur mail of the a ccount can be printed out direct ly through the pr inter ( ASCII text o nly). This scr e en also allow you choose wh ere to send an email when the printe r status changes.
37 Enable E-mail Notification Y ou can set the pr int server t o send an alert messag e wh en the printer s tatus changes through e-mail. T o e n able this func tion, click Ye s in Enab le e- mai l notification . Then , input the ad minis trator's e-mail address in the D estination e-mail Address box.
38 ADVANCED > SNMP The SNMP scr een allo ws you t o u se SNMP (Simple Net wor k Manage me nt Protocol) to manag e complex net works. SNMP Management Commun ity 1/ 2/3 : Ente r a n ame in the Name box, and configure the Access Right by selec ting Read Only or Read/ Write from th e drop-d own li st.
39 MAINTENANCE > Password The Password screen allows you to cha nge the password of th e print server by entering the current password in Current Password and new passwo rd in New Password and Conf ir m Pass w ord . After done the co nfiguration, click Apply Settings to enab le and r estore the n ew password, or Cance l to abando n.
40 MAINTENANCE > Save/Restore Settings The Save/Restore Settings scr e en not only al lows you to save the current configuration in a computer for backup by clicking Save in Save Settings to Local .
41 MAINTENANCE > Firmware Upgrade The Firmware Upgrade screen display s you the current fi rmware’ s information of the pri nt server , and a lso allows you t o up gr ade the firmwar e of the pr int server when a new version of firmware is available.
42 MAINTENANCE > Diagnostics The Diagnostic s sc reen al lows you to te st the prin ting f or LPT /USB por t of the print ser ver . After se lecting a po rt, click Print T est Pag e to print a test pag e.

44 Print Server St atus This field displays the informat ion of the print server a bout the fi rm ware vers ion, MAC/IP addres s, and up ti me. Printer St atus The items in thi s f ield display the inform at ion of the printer , such as the given name for th e prin ter , spee d , prin ter s t atu s, and status of your p rinting tasks, etc.

46 Auto IP This fiel d contains t he curre nt set tings of TCP/IP , inclu ding DHCP/BO O TP , UPnP , and Mac Bonjour/Rendezvous . 47 STATUS >Print Log The Print Log scr ee n d isplays the print i ng record of the autho rized users. Print Lo g The items in thi s f ield disp lay the user( s ) information, which include the user(s) MAC add ress, IP address , name, and s t atus o f printing tas ks.
