9 Safety During Use ß Do not touch hot surfaces. Use handles and knobs. ß Alwa ys ll the water reser v oir rst, then plug into a suitable power outlet. T o disconnect, push the ‘Pow er’ button to switch off the appliance, then remo ve the plug fr om the pow er outlet.

1 1 B Preparing The Espresso Mak er Place the Espresso mak er on a dr y , stable worktop or other surface wher e the machine will be used. IMPOR T ANT: For rst time use or if the appliance has not been used for some time, it is important that it is rinsed as follows: ß Ensure the drip tra y and grate are in place.
12 ß Insert the power cord into a suitable mains outlet. Press the power button once to turn the espresso mak er on (7). The light ar ound the pow er button will sta y illuminated; this is to indicate that your espresso mak er is on (8). ß The manual and buttons will ash to indicate the appliance is heating up .
13 ß Place a large jug or container under both pouring spouts (9). Press the manual button (10) and allow the water to run thr ough for appr oximately 5 to 10 seconds. NB: If the water reservoir is empty , the unit will not function and the manual, and buttons will ash until the reservoir is lled.
14 C Using The Espresso Mak er Ho w T o Mak e The P erfect Espr esso ß Y ou may wish to pr eheat the cups by placing them on the cup warming plate located at the top of the appliance or by lling them with hot water , this will help preserve the crema (fr oth) of the espresso (see Hints & Tips page 25).
15 ß Rest the portalter handle with the lter basket in position on the countertop. Using the tamping tool, apply a moderate packing pr essure (14).
16 ß Press the pr eferred button – man ual for a continuous pour (18), the single espresso for 45ml (19) or the double espresso f or 90ml. (20). NB: When using the manual operation y ou must press the button once to start the pour and again to stop the pour .
17 T exturing Milk Milk texturing is the steaming of milk. The steam does two things; it heats the milk and mixes air with the milk to form a foam y texture. As with learning to make an espr esso , perfecting the art of milk texturing tak es time and practice .
18 ß Place the steam arm into the pitcher lled with milk so that the nozzle is appr oximately 1.5cm belo w the surface. ß Activate the steam function by turning the steam and hot water contr ol dial to the setting (26).
19 NB: The amount of foam requir ed will var y depending on the drinks being made . For example, a cappuccino will r equire mor e foam than a latte. T o stop the steam immediately , once the desired consistency is achiev ed, turn the steam and hot water control dial back to the center position (29).
20 Using The Hot W ater Function The hot water function can be used for topping up y our coffee and is suitable for making tea. ß Place a cup or container under the steam/hot water arm and activate the hot water function by turning the steam and hot water contr ol dial to the hot water setting (31).
2 1 D Pro gramming The Espresso Mak er The Cuisinart Programmable Espresso Machine f eatures a single and double espr esso setting of 45ml and 90ml. By following a f ew simple steps, you can pre-pr ogramme your perfect serving size down to the millilitre.
22 ß Place a cup under both pouring spouts. ß T o begin programming pr ess the programme button (39). The light around the pr ogramme button will illuminate with a constant blue light. ß Press the single espr esso button once to star t the espresso pour (40).
23 Pro gramming Double Espresso ß Prepar e the por talter holder with the two cup lter bask et and ll with nely ground espr esso. Using the tamping tool, rmly tamp the coffee grinds. For tips on tamping, see “T amping the Coffee Grounds” on page 26.
24 ß Allow the espr esso to pour until it reaches the desir ed lev el. Once that is reached, stop the espresso pour by pr essing the double espresso button. A beep will signify that the new setting for the double espresso operation has been pr ogrammed and stored in the machine’ s memor y .
25 E Hints & Tips Achie ving The P erfect Espr esso It is generally agr eed that there ar e four basic elements to achiev e the perfect cup of espresso: Coffee ß While the bulk of the liquid is water , all of the av our should be from the coffee.
26 T amping the Coffee Grounds ß If you choose to use gr ound espresso instead of pods, tamping the coffee is a v er y important par t of the coffee making pr ocess. ß Use the scoop supplied to ll the lter bask et, then using the tamping tool (at end of the measuring scoop), tamp (press do wn) down the grounds with moderate pr essure.
27 Cleaning & Maintenance ß Befor e rst use and after ev er y use, clean each par t thoroughl y . ß Alwa ys unplug the appliance from the mains outlet bef ore cleaning. ß Nev er submerge the motor base in water or other liquid, or place in a dishwasher ß T o clean, simply wipe with a clean damp cloth and dr y befor e storing.
28 Cleaning The Grate On The Drip T ray ß The grate should be remov ed, emptied and cleaned frequently , par ticularly when the drip tra y is full. ß The grate can be washed in warm soap y water and rinsed thoroughly . Use a non-abrasive washing liquid (do not use abrasiv e cleaners, pads or cloths which can scratch the surface).
29 ß Ensure the steam and hot water contr ol dial is in the off position. Press the pow er button off, unplug the pow er cord and allow the machine to cool.
30 De-scaling ß It is strongl y recommended that y ou de-scale the appliance from time to time. The frequency depends upon the hardness of y our tap water and how often y ou use the appliance .
