INTRODUCTION The 3M ™ Dynatel 2250E/2273E Advanced Cable and F ault Locator consists of a T ransmitter and a Receiver for locating b uried cables or Activ e Duct Pr obes (sondes). It also measures and pinpoints sheath faults in buried cables (2273E only) and conductor f aults in aerial cables.
INITIAL RECEIVER CONFIGURA TION Display depth units (inches, feet and inches, or centimeters) may be changed while holding and pressing . For each press, one of three units will display . T o change the passiv e Power frequency , press and hold then press to toggle between 50 or 60 Hz as displayed in the lo w er left corner of the display .
TRANSMITTER BA TTER Y TEST T o test the Ba tteries, press and hold . Listen to the tone and watch the display . • solid tone and 'OK' indicates batteries good; • beeping tone and 'LO' indicates batteries low; • no tone and '- -' indicates replace batteries.

Perform a battery test and then connect the T r ansmitter using one of the three methods below to put tr acing signal on a cable . Page 5 Danger! V oltage higher than 240 volts will damage equipment and cause personal injury and death.
DIRECT CONNECT METHOD Make sure the T ransmitter is off. Plug the Direct Connect Cable into the front panel jack. Connect the Black clip to the ground rod. Place the ground rod in the earth perpendicular to the suspected cable path. If necessary , extend the black lead with the Ground Extension Cable.
Press to select Trace mode. Press ag ain to select one or all of the four frequencies. The display will alternate between displaying the selected frequency and the output signal current. It is best to choose the low est frequency for direct connect with far-end g round and a high frequency for direct connect with no far -end ground.
DYNA-COUPLER METHOD Cable Path Page 8 Connect the Dyna-Coupler to the T ransmitter front panel jac k using the coupler cable. Clamp the Dyna-Coupler around the cable belo w any bonds just before cable enters the earth. The jaws of the coupler m ust fully close.
INDUCTION METHOD Place the transmitter on the ground ov er the target cable with the lid hinge in line with the cable path. Press to turn the T ransmitter on. Press again to select either 33 kHz or 133 kHz. For gr eater tracing range, select high output le vel by pressing .

Press to select the 50/60 Hz po wer frequency (see Selecting P assive P ow er F requencies, pa ge 12) or LF for passiv e locating; otherwise, select the same frequency as the Transmitter .
About T race Modes Peak: In this mode, as the antenna crosses the cable, the Receiv er speaker v olume incr eases to a maximum and the bar graph f ills fr om both sides tow ard the middle. As the antenna mov es off the cable path, the speaker v olume decreases and the bar gr aph opens.
Selecting P assive P ower F requencies See section Initial Receiv er Configuration (page 3) to set the pow er frequenc y to 50 Hz or 60 Hz. The Recei ver can be tuned to locate 3 dif ferent harmonics of the chosen power frequenc y . H50 Hz or H60 Hz (high harmonic): Best for general locating of passiv e power .
Using Current Indications During Locating Both the Transmitter and Recei ver will indicate cable current. These current indications will help to select a trace frequency , identify the correct cable and trouble shoot the set up. When using the direct connect method, the Transmitter output current number is displayed.
LOCA TING SHEA TH FA UL TS (2273E ONL Y) T r ansmitter Setup Remove both the near -end and far-end shield bonds from the test section. Perform a battery test then with the T ransmitter off, connect the Black clip to the ground rod. Place the ground rod behind the Transmitter , away from the faulted section, and in line with the cable path.
T o verify the fault location, insert the fr ame’ s red leg directly on the spot identified abo ve. Piv ot the frame in a circle around red leg re-inserting the green leg in ground e very few de grees of the circle. The bar graph should always be on the left (red) indicating that the fault is directly below r ed leg.
LOCA TING AN ACTIVE DUCT PROBE (ADP) Press to turn the Receiver on. Press to select the 33 kHz frequency . Press to select the Peak mode . If you find tha t the received signal is too weak in this mode, try the Special Peak mode. T o select Special Peak mode: from Peak mode, press and hold , then press to toggle between Peak and Special Peak modes.
LOCA TING EMS MARKERS EMS markers may be detected and located using either the Dynatel™ 2205 or 2206 EMS Marker Locating Accessory . T o attach the accessory , slide the Recei ver horizontally into EMS Marker Locating Accessory mounting slot. Make sure the locking button holds the Recei ver securely in the slot.
TONING AERIAL FA UL TS T r ansmitter Setup Perform a battery test; then with the T ransmitter off, plug the direct connect cable into the front panel jack.
CABLE OR PAIR IDENTIFICA TION T ransmitter Setup T ransmitter setup is the same to identify cables or pairs; howe ver , Recei ver setups are dif ferent. Perform a battery test; then with the transmitter off, connect the Dyna-Coupler to the T ransmitter front panel jack using the coupler cable.
PAIR IDENTIFICA TION Receiv er Setup Press to turn the Receiver on. Press to select T one mode . Connect the inducti ve probe to Recei ver accessory jack using probe cable. Press to select the highest toning frequency (133 kHz). Insert Probe into the b undle of pairs (or gr oup, if kno wn) and press .
