6 CAUTION: Make sure the su rface is flat. Ope rating your scanner on an uneven surf ace can dam ag e the internal components. Connecting the Har dware Interfa ce Cables If your com puter has a U SB port, follow th e instru ctions in the Connecting the USB Cable section to connect t he sca nner to your computer.
7 CHA PTER 2. Scanning Ba sics VistaScan is th e prim ary prog ram or dr iver you us e to scan with your Com paq scanner. I t is a TWAI N-compliant pro gram , which means tha t it c an be run fro m other program s that sup port scanning , like Pag eManager and others.

18 Changing the Original Document Source The Orig inal D ocum ent Source setting identi fies the item you want to scan. You can choose f rom the fo llowing settings: Flatbed Reflective: Scans paper orig inals (non- transparencies) e.g., photog raphs, docum ents, and br ochures.

This setting create s larger f iles than the B/W Pho to setting . True Color, CMYK: Converts RGB (video ) color data into CMYK (pr inted) col or da ta using a sp ecial col or tr ansform ation process.

Changing the Resolution Setting Scanning resol ution is m easured in dots pe r inch (DPI).

22 Using Custom Reso lution Sett ings You can als o specify custom resolution setting s that y ou can use when you scan. The maxim um custom resolu tion sett ing y ou can define is 240 0 dpi. To define the custom resolution set tings: 1. Choose the Custom… option f rom the Resolutio n drop down menu.

Sharpen More — Use thi s option when you wan t to sha rpen the imag e more than the s tandard Sha rpen filt er does.
26 You can spec ify custom scaling settings to u se when you scan. To define the c ustom scaling s ettings: 1. Choose the Custom… optio n from the Scaling drop down menu. The Custom Scaling window open s. 2. Enter the d esired s cale fac tor in either t he Wid th or Heig ht text box.

30 Adjusting Image Brightn ess, Contrast, Highlights and Shadows When you click on the Brig htness/Co ntras t tab from the Color Adjustm ent panel a ser ies of s lide b ars appear. Ad just the associated tones by dragg ing the slide r in on e of the b ars to the left or the rig ht.

A djust ing the Image Tones The Curve c omm and is ano ther way to mak e precise ad justments in the hig hlight, m i dtones, o r shadow l evels in your images.
34 When you c lick in the wheel the im age tones are shifted to the particula r hue that is repres ented in tha t area. Click the Reset button to c ancel the chang es and retu rns the v alue to defau lt settin g.

36 Using Vista Shuttle VistaS huttle is a PC -based applicatio n that p rovides an easy w ay for you to create gre eting cards, wallpaper for your com puter desktop, a screen sav er for y our com puter, e-cards (e-m ail greeting cards) , and more.
