Controller BIOS Settings The controller displays the default Information V iew when SMOR starts, as shown i n Figur e 2-3 .
2-11 Storage Manager on ROM Enable SCSI CD-ROM Boot When enabled, the BIOS attempts to detect a bootable CD-ROM that uses the El-T orito format. This s etting is dis abled by default, because some bootable CD-ROMs contain device-specific boot code that is not supported by Adaptec contr ollers.

2-20 Adaptec Storage Management Softwar e User’ s Guide Setting the Configuration There are two co nfiguration options on the File menu: ■ Read System Config —Causes SMOR to r escan to detect any changes in hardwar e configuratio n or status. Any changes that have been made and not saved ar e lost.
2-21 Storage Manager on ROM 2 When the RAID T ype window appears, select the RAID level you want t o use. The default stripe size is selecte d automatically; however you can s elect a dif fer ent stripe size value by highlighting the fi eld and using the up and down arrow keys to change the stripe size.

2-23 Storage Manager on ROM Creating a Multilevel RAID Cre ating a multilevel RAID (RAID 10 or 50) is simi lar to cr eating a normal RAID 1 or RAID 5 ar ray gr oup. T o create a RAID10 or RAID 50 multilevel RAID, follow these steps : 1 Cre ate and build your array gr oups as described in Cr eating an Array on page 2-20 .

3-3 Storage Manager System Requirements Adaptec Storage Manager software and device driv ers r equir e approxi mately 4 MB of disk space. The host system should have at least 64 MB of memory a nd a Pentium processor (200 MHz or faster). A mouse and SVGA color monitor ar e re quir ed.

For more information, see page 3-2 0 . Create Array Group Starts the process of collec ting available in dividual drives to assemble into a RAID array .
3-10 Adaptec Storage Management Softwar e User’ s Guide Logical Device Ad dresses Every device and array is as signed a logical device addr ess by Storage Manager . This is the addr ess used by the host operating system to access the devic e or array .
3-11 Storage Manager The complete logical device addr ess is composed of the following fields: Array groups ar e automaticall y assigned an addr ess that corr esponds to the lowest logical device addr ess used by a device in that array group.

During the drive selection process some drives might be displayed in a blue color . This indicates that these drives cannot be included in the array unless you change the configurat ion.

3-21 Storage Manager Note: If a drive fails during expansion, the expansion may complete successfully . However , the new , larger array re mains in a degraded state until the pr oblem is fixed. If there is a hot spar e associated with the array , the degraded array is re built using the hot spare.

3-26 Adaptec Storage Management Softwar e User’ s Guide The Advisory setting allows the contr oller to use its own algorithms for cache management. This is more ef ficient than allowing the operating system to direct the cache operation. 3 Click OK to exit the window and save the changes.

Note: Y ou can select Reb uild even if the failed dri ve has not been r eplaced and try using the drive again.
3-43 Storage Manager Y ou should reboot your operating system to ensu r e that the hot spare drive is r ecognized correctly . Hot spares ar e r eserved to automatically replace failed drives in RAID 1 or 10 and RAID 5 or 50 arrays and cannot be accessed by the operating system for data storage.

3-49 Storage Manager Environments with a lar ge number of sequential reads should generate a high number of Read -Ahead Hits r elative to T otal Sectors. These hits r educe the number of s eek operations and increase performance. The Read-Ahe ad Hits count can be incr eased by adding more cache memory to the contr oller .

3-51 Storage Manager Connecting Across a Netw ork Storage Manager can ru n as a clie nt/server application across a network using a TCP/IP connection. The Storage Manager client runs on a supported workstation operating system and connects to one of the supported networked servers running the Adaptec communication engine.

For both workstati ons and servers, this is done by editing the Storage Manager configuration file ( dptmgr .ini ) .
