4 Before P rinting T urning the M achine On and Off Turn on the machine before printing. T urning on the Machine Before turning o n the machine, con firm the following. z The Print Head and ink tanks are set into place. If you are using the machine connected to a computer , confirm also the following.
5 Before Printi ng z Setting the Po wer Save Mode The mac hine enters Power save m ode if not operated for a certain interval. In the Power sav e mode, the internal f luorescent lamp is turned off, and only the POWER lamp stay lit. Y ou can configure the interval t hat the machine waits before entering Power save m ode.
6 Before P rinting Han dling th e Orig inal Docu ment This section describes how to load the original document on the Platen Glass. Original Document Requirement s The original docu ments you load.
7 Before Printi ng 2 Gently close the Doc ument Cover . 10 Before P rinting z Media T y pes Y ou Cannot Use Do not us e the following types of paper . Usi ng such paper will not only produce unsatisfactory results, but can also cause the machine to jam or malfunction.
11 Before Printi ng Using Specialty Media Canon recomm ends that you use Canon genuine media to ensure optimal print quality . Using t he Auto Sheet F eeder and the C assette This mac hine off.
12 Before P rinting z When Printing for the First Time At purchase, the machine is set to feed f rom the Au to Sheet Feeder. If you are printing wit hout changing paper source s ettings, load paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder . (A) Load plain paper in the Auto S heet Feeder .
13 Before Printi ng Pape r Source Select ion Scen arios Deciding on the usage of the t wo paper sources t o print with minimum reloading of paper depends mainly on the variety of t he type of paper you use regularly .
14 Before P rinting z If you print m ainly on plain p aper Y ou can load plain paper of the same size in both paper sources, and set the printer driver to automatically switch the paper source when ei ther paper source runs out of paper dur ing printing.
15 Before Printi ng Changing the Paper Sourc e Before printing, confirm that the location wher e you have loaded paper is selected as t he paper source.
16 Before P rinting Loading Paper Imp ortant z If you cu t plain pape r to 4" x 6 " / 101. 6 x 152.4 mm, 5" x 7" / 1 27.0 x 17 7.8 mm, or 2 .13" x 3. 39" / 54.0 x 86.0 mm (credit card-size) f or a trial print, it can cause p a per jams.
17 Before Printi ng z Loading Paper in the Auto Sheet Fe eder 1 Flatten th e four corners of t he pap er before loading it. 2 Prepare to load pape r . (1) Open the Sheet Feeder Cover and pull out the Paper Support . (2) Open the Paper Output T ray . Put your finger on the top of t he Paper Output T ra y and open it gently .
18 Before P rinting 3 Load t he pap er . (1) Load the paper in t he Auto Sheet Feeder with the print side facing UP . (2) Align the paper stack against the Cover Guide on the right side of t he Paper Support. (3) Pinch the Paper Guide and slide it against the left side of the paper stack.
19 Before Printi ng 3 Load t he pap er with the print side facing DOWN. (1) Load the paper in t he Cassette with the print side facing DOWN and the leading edge to the far sid e. (2) Align the paper st ack against the right side of the Cassette. (3) Slide the paper guides t o fit to the loaded paper stack.
20 Before P rinting Loading Envelopes Use either European DL or US Comm. Env . #10-sized envelope. z Loadi ng Enve lopes in th e Auto S heet Fe eder 1 Load the envel ope against the Cover Guide (the right side of the Paper S upport). Load with the front face UP and t he rear flaps DOWN on the left.
21 Before Printi ng z Loadi ng Enve lopes in th e Cass ette 1 Align the e nvelope st ack agains t the right si de of the Casset te. Load with the front f ac e DOWN. The flap of the envelope will appear f acing UP on the left side. A maximum of 5 envelopes can be loaded at on ce.
22 Before P rinting Changing the Paper and Print Settings This section des cribes th e Settings screen that can be spe cified on the Operat ion Panel when copying, or when printing from a memory card, printed photo or f ilm. Settin g Items in Each Mod e Items in eac h mode are as follows.
23 Before Printi ng (3) Select the paper source. Before printing, c onfirm that the location w here you hav e loaded paper is select ed as the paper source. Press the OK button to change t he paper source. (4) S pec ify the page size. Credit card, A5, B5, A4, 8.
24 Before P rinting z Memory Card, Easy Photo Reprint, and Film Prin t Mode s This sec tion describes the paper and print settings f or Memo ry card, E asy photo repr int, and Film print modes. 29 Scanni ng Imag es Scannin g Images Y ou can scan images from the machine to a computer without printing t hem and save them in popular file formats, suc h as JPEG , TIFF , bitmaps, or P DF . If you are scanning printed text, y ou can use the OCR (Optical Character Rec ognition) software to con vert it to text data.
30 Copyin g Copyin g Making Copies This section describes the basic procedure to make copies. 1 T urn on the ma chine . See “Turning the Machine O n and Off” on page 4. 2 Select Copy on the HOME screen. See “B asic Operation for the Operation Panel” on page 2.

32 Prin ting from a M emory Ca rd Printi ng from a Memory Card Memory Cards Suppor ted by This Machine The following memory cards are compat ible with this machine. *1 Requires purchase of a separate compact flash card adapter for xD-Picture cards. *2 Use the special adapter provided with the card.

37 Photo P rinting from Phot o or Fi lm Photo Printing from Photo or Film Y ou can scan photos and 35 mm film into and then print them from the machine. For film, both film strips (six connect ed frames per st rip after r egular developing) and slides (one frame per mounted slide) are suppor ted.
38 Photo P rinting from Pho to or Fi lm 4 Remove the F AU Protective Sh eet from the Document Cov er and then rem o ve the film gui de for f ilm strip from the b ack of the F AU Protec tive Sheet. 5 Mount film in the app ropriate film guide. For a 35 mm film s trip, see “Mount ing a 35 m m Film S trip” on page 38.
39 Photo P rinting from Phot o or Fi lm (4) With the ma rk on the film guide facing up, align the film guide with the indent ations on the right and left sides of t he Platen Glass. (5) Confirm that the front side of the f ilm (the side showing the cor rect image) faces down.
40 Photo P rinting from Pho to or Fi lm z Mounti ng 35 mm Slides (1) Load the film guide wi th its sides to t he right and left grooves of the Platen Glass. (2) Mount the slides in the film guide with the front side (the side showing the correct image) face down, the frame order running from left to right, and with the image up side down.

44 Prin ting Photo graph s Direc tly from a Compl iant D evice 3 Connect th e PictBridge com pliant dev ice to the mac hine. (1) Make sure that the PictBridge compliant device is turned off. (2) Connect the PictBridge compliant dev ice to the machine using a USB c able recommended by the manufact urer of the device.
45 Printing Photog raphs Di rectly fr om a Com pliant Devi ce Printing Photogra phs Directly from a PictBridge Compliant Devic e When operating the device, be sure to follow the instructions given in the instruction manual of your PictBridge com pliant device.
46 Prin ting Photo graph s Direc tly from a Compl iant D evice z Paper Size and Paper T ype Setting s If these settings are set to Default (the setting to follow that of the machine) on the PictBridge compliant device, the Page size and the M edia t ype setti ngs specified in the PictBri dge settings of the m achine are applied.
47 Printing Photog raphs Di rectly fr om a Com pliant Devi ce z Lay out a nd Trimmi ng S ett ing s If Layout is set to Default (the s etting to follow that of the machine) on the PictBridge compliant device, the pr int setting specified in the P ictBridge settin gs of the machine is applied.
48 Prin ting Photo graph s Direc tly from a Compl iant D evice z Confirming or Changing PictBridge Pr int Settings on t he Machine Y ou can confirm and change the print s ettings such as media ty pe and size that are preset to the machine and applied to PictBridge printing.
49 Printing Photog raphs Di rectly fr om a Com pliant Devi ce Contrast Adjust contrast . Color hue Adjust color hue. Effects Applies special effects t o the photo, such as printing in sepia tones or with a sketch illustration like effect.
50 Routine Mai ntenance Rou tine Mai nte nanc e Replacing an Ink T ank When ink runs out, replace the ink t ank. The machine will not print if the wro ng type of ink tank is used, or if it is installed in the incorrect pos ition. The mac hine uses the following ink tanks.
51 Routine Mai ntenan ce Knowing When to Replace Ink T ank Identify the empty ink tank on t he LCD and replace it. If the “! ” symbol i s displayed abo ve an ink tank If the machine detects low ink when you st art printing, the “!” symbol is displayed on the LCD.
52 Routine Mai ntenance Replacing Ink T anks When ink tanks run out of i nk, replace them using the following step s. 1 Open the Paper Out put T ray . (1) Put your finger on the top of t he Paper Output T ray and open it gently . 2 Make sur e that the machin e is turned o n, and raise the Sc anning U nit (Printer Co ver) until it stop s.
53 Routine Mai ntenan ce 4 Remove th e ink tank w hose l amp is flashin g fast. (1) Push the tab and remove the ink tank. 5 Prepare the replacement tank. (1) Remove the new ink tank fr om its packaging, then pull the orange tape in the direction of the arrow (A) s o that the prot ective film does not remain on the air hole (B).
54 Routine Mai ntenance 6 Insta ll the ink t ank. (1) Insert the front end of the ink tank into the Print Head. (2) Press on t he mark on the ink tank until t he ink tank snaps firmly into place. (3) Make sure that the ink lamp lights up red. 7 Clos e th e Inne r Co ver .
55 Routine Mai ntenan ce Keeping the Best Printing Result s T o avoid dry ing of the Print Head and clogging of the nozzles, not e the following. When Y ou T urn Off the M achine Follow the procedure below to turn of f the machine. (1) Press the ON/OFF butto n to t urn o ff th e m ach ine .
56 Routine Mai ntenance When Printing Becomes Faint or Colors Are Incorrect When printing becomes faint or colors are incorrect even if ink remains in the ink tanks, the print head nozzles ar e probably clog ged. Print the nozzle c heck pattern to co nfirm the condition of the nozzles and then perform Print Head Cleaning.
57 Routine Mai ntenan ce Printing the Nozzle C heck Pattern Print the nozzle check pattern to det ermine whether the ink ejects properly f rom the Print Head. 1 Make su re that the ma chine is turned on, then load a s heet of A4 or Lette r-sized plain p aper in the Auto Sheet Feeder or the Cassette.
58 Routine Mai ntenance Examining the Nozzle Check Pattern Follow the procedure below to examine the nozz le check pattern, and perform cleaning if necessary . 1 Check the nozzle ch eck p attern you printed . (1) Check if lines in this pattern are missing.
59 Routine Mai ntenan ce 2 The confi rmation screen s for white stre aks and m issing lines are disp layed alternatel y . Select th e patt ern that is cl oser to the nozzle chec k pattern that you printed. z If There Are No Missing Lines and No W hite St reak s (1) Select All A and press t he OK button.
60 Routine Mai ntenance Print Head Cleaning Clean the Print Head if lines are m issing or if white streaks appear in the printed no zzle check pattern. Cleaning unclogs the nozzles and restores the print head condition. Note that cleaning the Print Head causes used ink to be absorbed in t he ink abs orber .
61 Routine Mai ntenan ce 5 Check the print head cond ition with the p rinted nozzle c heck p attern, and t ake appropria te action. See “E xamining the Noz zle Check Pattern” on page 58. Note If the pr oblem is not re s olved af ter performing ste ps 4 and 5 t wice, try Print Head Deep Cleaning .
62 Routine Mai ntenance Print Head Deep Cleaning If print quality does not improve by standard Pr int Head Cleaning, t ry Print Head Deep Cleaning, which is a more powerful process. Note that cl eaning the Print Head causes used ink to be absorbed in the ink absorber .
63 Routine Mai ntenan ce 5 Check the conditio n of the Pri nt Head. (1) Print the nozzle check pattern to c heck the print head condition. See “Printing the Nozzle Check Pattern” on page 57. If a p articular color is not printed proper ly , replace the ink tank of t hat color .
64 Routine Mai ntenance Alig ning t he Pr int Head If ruled lines are pr inted misaligned or print results are otherwise unsat isfact ory , adjust the print head position. Automatic Print Head Alignment 1 Make su re that the ma chine is turned on, and then loa d a sheet of A4 or Lett er- sized p lain paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder .
65 Routine Mai ntenan ce Manual Pri nt Head Alignme nt If the results of Automatic Print Head Alignmen t are not s atisfactory , follow the pr ocedure below to perform Manual Print Head Alignment. For details on performing Automatic Print Head Alignment, see “ Automatic Print Head Alignment” on page 64.
66 Routine Mai ntenance 9 Look at the printout. From the p atterns, select the most even, least irre gular patterns for each co lumn and input their numbers. Pres s the OK button. (1) Select a column to input the pattern number . (2) Use the [ or ] button to input the num ber of the pattern.
67 Routine Mai ntenan ce 13 Look at the printout. From the p atterns, select the most even pat terns for ea ch column and inpu t thei r nu mbe rs. Pr ess t he OK button. In the same way in step 9, input t he numbers. Note When you tu rn off the machi ne, be sure to press the ON/OF F button on the mach ine.
68 Routine Mai ntenance Cleaning Y our Machine This section describes the cleaning procedure t hat is needed to m aintain your machine. Cleaning the Plat en Gla ss and Document Co ver Moisten a clean, soft, lint-free cloth and wr ing out excess water .
69 Routine Mai ntenan ce 3 Clean t he pap er feed rollers. (1) Select Setti ngs on the HOME s creen. See “Basic Operation for the O peration Panel” o n page 2. The Settings screen is displayed. (2) Select Maintenance , then press the OK button. The Maintenance screen is displayed.
70 Routine Mai ntenance 4 Load t his and o nly this sheet of paper in th e Auto Sheet F eeder with the ope n side to the front. 5 Perform bot tom plate clean ing. (1) Select Setti ngs on the HOME s creen. See “Basic Operation for the O peration Panel” o n page 2.

74 Trou bleshoot ing LCD Ca nnot Be Se en At All “The remaining le vel of the following ink cannot be correctly detected. Replace the ink tank.” U130 The remaining ink level cannot be correctly detected. Replace the ink tank and close the Scanning Unit (Printer Cover).
75 Trouble shooti ng An Unintended Language Is Displayed on the L CD Cause Act ion The language you want to be displayed is not selected. Select the language you want to be displayed according to th e following procedure. (1) Press the HOME button. W ait for about 5 seconds, select , and then press the OK button.
76 Trou bleshoot ing Cannot Inst all the MP Drivers Cause Act ion Unable to proceed beyond the Printer Connection screen. If you were unable to proceed beyond the Printer Connection scree n, follow the procedure below to reinstall the MP Drivers. (1) Click Cancel on the Printer Connection scree n.
77 Trouble shooti ng Cannot C onnect to Computer Proper ly Printing S peed Is Slow / USB 2.0 Hi-Speed Connection Does Not W ork “Hi-Speed USB Device Plugge d into non-Hi-Sp e ed USB Hub” or “This Device Ca n Perform Fas ter” Message Is Displayed (Windows XP Only) The Setup CD-ROM is defective.
78 Trou bleshoot ing Print Result s Not Satisfactory Cannot Print to End of Job Part of the Page Is Not Printed Colo rs Are Un cle ar Cause Act ion Size of the print data is extremely large (Windows XP/Windows 2000 only). In Windows XP and Windows 2000, click Print Options on the Page Setup sheet.
79 Trouble shooti ng Ink Does Not Come Out/Printing Does Not S ta rt/Printing Is Blurred/ Colors Are Wrong/S traight Lines Are Misaligned Cause Act ion Ink tank is empty . Open the Scanning Unit (Printer Cover) and check the ink lamps. If an ink lamp is flashing red slowly at about 3-second intervals, ink is ru nning low.
80 Trou bleshoot ing White Streak s Printed Pa per Curls or Has Ink Blot s Printed Surface Is Scratched/Pap er Is Smudged The media is loaded with the wrong side facing upwards. Many types of paper are made to be printed on only a particular side of the paper .
81 Trouble shooti ng Printing on inappropriate type of paper. z Check to see if the paper you are printing on is not too thick or curled. See “Media T ypes Y ou Cannot Use ” on page 10. z When performing Borderless Printing, print quality may be reduced at the top and bottom edges of the paper.
82 Trou bleshoot ing Colo rs Are U neven or Streaked Printing Proble ms When Copying Printing Does Not St art Media T ype setting in the Operation Panel does not match the actua l type of paper . Check that the Media T ype set in the Operation Panel matches th e type of the loaded printing paper .
83 Trouble shooti ng Ink tank not installed in proper position. Open the Scanning Unit (Printer Cover) and check the ink lamps. If there is still sufficient ink but its ink lamp is flashing red, an ink tank may be installed in a wrong position. Confirm that the ink tanks are installed in the appropriate positions.
84 Trou bleshoot ing Paper Does Not Feed Properly Cause Act ion Printing on inappropriate type of paper. Check to see if the paper you are printing on is not too thick or curled. See “Media T ypes Y ou Cannot Use” on page 10. Paper Feed Rollers are dirty .
85 Trouble shooti ng Paper Jams Cause Act ion Paper jammed in the Paper Output Slot or the Auto Sheet Feeder. Remove the paper following the procedure below. (1) Slowly pull the paper out, either from the Auto Sheet Feeder or from the Paper Output Slot, whichever is easier.
86 Trou bleshoot ing Landscape 4" x 6" / 101.6 x 152.4 mm paper loaded in the Cassette jammed inside the machine. Always load 4" x 6" / 101.6 x 152.4 mm media in portrait o rientation regardless of the printing orientation. Remove the paper following the procedure below.
87 Trouble shooti ng Paper jammed inside the machine at the transport unit. (Continued) Note When reloading the paper in the machine, see “Paper Does Not Feed Properly” on page 84 to confirm that you are using the correct paper and are loading it into the machine correctly .
88 Trou bleshoot ing Error Mess age Appears on the Scr een Writing Error/Ou tput Error/Communication Error Cause Act ion The machine is not ready . Confirm that the POWER lamp is lit blue. If the POWER lamp is off, turn the machine on. While the POWER lamp is flashing blue, the machine is initializing.
89 Trouble shooti ng Error Re garding Automatic Duplex Pri nting Is Displayed Error No .: 300 I s Displaye d Cause Act ion The correct media size is not selected in the MP Drivers. First, check the Page Size setting in the application software you are printing from .
