Introduction 1.
Introduction 1- 2 ADAM 4000 Series User’s Manual 1.1 Overview The ADAM Ser ies is a set of inte lligent sensor-to-computer interface modules containing built-in m icroprocessor. They are remotely controlled through a simple set of commands issued in ASCII format and transm itted in RS-485 p rotocol.
Chapter 1 Chapter 1 Introduction 1 - 3 The command set fo r input modules is larg er because it incorp orates alarm functions. All communication s to and from the module a re performed in ASCII, which means that ADAM modules can be virtually programmed in any high-level language.
Introduction 1- 4 ADAM 4000 Series User’s Manual ADAM modules can be m ounted on any panels, brackets, or DIN rails. They can also be stacked together . The RS-485 n etwork, together with screw-terminal plug connectors, allows for system expansion, recon figuration, and repair without disturbing field wiring.
Installation Guideline 2.
Inst alla tion Gu ide line 2- 2 ADAM 4000 Series User’s Manual This chapter provides gu idelines to what is needed to set up and install an ADAM network. A quick hook up scheme is provided that le ts you configure modules before th ey are installed in a network.
Chapter 2 Chapter 2 installation Guideline 2 - 3 Power supply For the ease of use in industrial en vironments, the ADAM m odules are designed to accept industry stand ard +24 V DC , unregulated power. Operation is guaranteed when using any power su pply between +10 and +30 V DC .

Chapter 2 Chapter 2 installation Guideline 2 - 5 Notice: User can refer our help file to see m ore details for explanation of Utility operation. ADAM Communication Speed In ADAM series, the baud rate ca n be configur ed from 1200 bp s to 38.4 K bps. Ho wever, th e ba ud rate of all modules i n an R S-485 network must be the same.
Inst alla tion Gu ide line 2- 6 ADAM 4000 Series User’s Manual 2.2 Basic configuration and ho ok-up Before placing a m odule in an existing network, the module should be configured. Though all modules are initially configured at th e factory, it is recommend ed to check if th e baud rate is set correctly beforehand.
Chapter 2 Chapter 2 installation Guideline 2 - 7 The following items are required to configure a m odule: an ADAM converter module, a personal computer with RS-232 por t (baud rate set to 9600) and the ADAM utility software.
Inst alla tion Gu ide line 2- 8 ADAM 4000 Series User’s Manual Module at address 01 responds that it is configured for an input range of + /-2.5 V, ba ud rate of 9600, integratio n time of 50 ms (60 Hz). The code also shows engineer ing units and no checksum checking or generation.
Chapter 2 Chapter 2 installation Guideline 2 - 9 2.3 Baud rate and Checksum ADAM modules contain EEPROMs to stor e configuration information and c alibration constants. The EEPROM rep laces the conventional array of switches and pots that ar e originally used for specif ying ba ud rate, input an d outp ut range … et c.

RS-485 Network E.
RS-485 Network E- 2 ADAM 4000 Series User’s Manual EIA RS -485 is industry ’s most w idely used bid irecti onal, balanced transmission line standard. It is sp ecifically developed f or industrial multi-drop systems that should be able to transmit and receive data at high rates or over long distances.
Appendix E Appendix E RS-485 Network E - 3 E.1 Basi c Net wor k Lay out Multi-drop RS-485 implies that there are two m ain wires in an segment. The connected mo dules tap from these two lines with so called drop cables. Thus all connections are p arallel and connecting or disconnecting of a node doesn ’t affect the network as a wh ole.
RS-485 Network E- 4 ADAM 4000 Series User’s Manual Sta r L ay o ut In this scheme the repeaters are connected to drop-down cables from the main wires of the first se gment.
Appendix E Appendix E RS-485 Network E - 5 E. 2 Line Termination Each discon tinuity in impedance cau ses reflections and distortion. When an imp edance discontinuity occurs in th e transmission line the immediate effect is signal reflection. This will lead to signa l distortion.
RS-485 Network E- 6 ADAM 4000 Series User’s Manual Figure E-5 Termination resistor locations Because each input is biased to 2.4 V, the nomin al common mode voltage of balanced RS-485 s ystems, the 18 k Ω on the input can be taken as being in series across the inp ut of each individual receiver.
Appendix E Appendix E RS-485 Network E - 7 E.3 RS-485 Data Flow Contr ol The RS-485 standar d uses a sing le pair of wires to send and receiv e data. This line sharing requires som e method to con trol the direction of the data flow. RTS (Request To Sent) and CTS (Clear To Sen t) are the most commonly used m ethod.
