8 Saf e Operation Practices T raining 1. Read the instructions care fully . Be familiar with the controls and the proper use of the equipment. 2. Nev er allow children or people unf amiliar with these instructions to use the mow er . Local regulations ma y restrict the age of the operator .
9 Saf e Operation Practices 9. When using any attachments , nev er direct discharge of material tow ard by standers nor allow any one near the machine while in operation. 10. Nev er operate the mower with de fective guar ds or shields, or without saf ety protective de vices in place.
Assemble the Steering Wheel 1. Make sur e the front wheels point forward. 2. Slide the cov er (3) over the steering post (2) (see F F igure 3 ). Mak e sure the collar of the cover is on top . NO TE: Before attachment of the steering wheel, mak e sure that the front wheels point f or w ard and are st raight.

Assembly Prepare the Engine NO TE: T he engine was shipped from the f actor y filled with oil. Check the le vel of the oil. Add oil as needed. NO TE: T he operation of a new engine will sometimes result in a slight amount of smok e. T his smoke is caused by paint or oil on or ar ound the muffler .
14 Operation Location of Contr ols Blade Rotation Control (1): Use the blade r otation con- trol to start and stop the rotation of the blade (see Fig - ure 13 ). Clutch/Brak e Pedal (2): The pedal has tw o functions. The first function is a clutch. The second function is a brak e.
T ransport the Unit T o transport the unit, follow the steps belo w . 1. Mov e the blade rotation control (1) to the DISENGA GE position (see F F igure 13 ). 2. Raise the lift le ver (5) to the highest position. 3. Mov e the throttle control (7) to a position betw een SLO W and F AS T .
16 Operation W ARNING F or better control of the unit, select a safe speed. 9. Make sur e the level of cut is still corr ect. After you mow a short distance, look at the area that w as cut. If the mow er housing does not cut level, see “Le vel the Mow er Housing”.
Bef ore Starting the Engine Check the Oil NO TE: T he engine was shipped from the f actor y filled with oil. Check the le vel of the oil. Add oil as needed. See the engine manufactur er’ s instructions for the type of petrol and oil to use . 1. Mak e sure the unit is le vel.
18 Operation Mowing and Bagging Tips 1. F or a lawn to look better , check the cutting le vel of the mow er housing. See “L evel the Mo wer Housing”. 2. F or the mow er housing to cut level, mak e sure the tires ha ve the correct amount of air pressur e.

20 G eneral R ecommendations 1. The owner’ s responsibility is to maintain this product. This will e xtend the life of the product and is also necessary to maintain warranty co ver age. 2. Check the spark plug, drive br ake, lubricate the unit, and clean the air filter once a year .
Maintenance 6 3 9 F igure 21 Install the Connector T ube 1. Slide the flange (7) end of the connector tube (3) through hole in rear plate (6) (see F F igures 19 and 21 ). 2. Slide the flange end of the connector tube ov er the e xtension tube (8) (see F F igure 19 ).
22 10. Mov e the blade rotation control to the ENGA GE position (see F F igure 23 ). 11. Check the pad for the blade brak e (7) (see F F igure 25 ). If the pad is e xcessiv ely worn or damaged, replace the brak e pad assembly . Correct replace- ment parts and assistance are av ailable from an authorized service center.

If there is mov ement of the belt or the blade(s) continue to rotate, engage and dis- engage the blade rotation control fiv e minutes to remo ve an y ex cess rubber from a new mo wer drive belt.
24 Maintenance 6. Assemble the adjustable nut to the parking brak e latch, brake le ver and brak e spring. F asten with the washer (2) and cotter pin (1). 7. Remo ve the 6 mm pin or bolt. 8. If the belt still slips after the clutch has been adjusted, then the motion drive belt is w orn or damaged and must be replaced.
Maintenance Le vel the Mo wer Housing If the mow er housing is level, the blade will cut easier and the lawn will look better . 1. Make sur e the unit is on a hard flat sur f ace. 2. Check the air pressure in the tir es. If the air pr es- sure is incorrect, the mo wer housing will not cut lev el.
26 Maintenance Check the Tires Check the air pressure in the tir es. Tir es with too much air pressure will cause the unit to ride r ough. Also , the wrong air pressur e will keep the mo wer housing from cutting lev el. The correct air pressure is: F ront Tires 0,97 BAR (14 PSI), R ear Tires 0,69 BAR (10 PSI).
Maintenance 12. T o install the motion drive belt, re verse the abov e steps. 13. Check the routing of the motion drive belt (1) (see F igure 2 6 ). Mak e sure the motion drive belt is installed correctly on the idler pulle y (2). Make sure the steering shaft assembly (3) is inside the motion drive belt.

30 T roubleshooting Chart m e l b o r P Solution The engine will not start. 1. F ollow the steps , “Star t the Engine” in this book. 2. Electr ic-Star t Models: Clean the battery ter minals. Tighten the cables . 3. Drain the fuel tank. Clean the fuel line.
T roubleshooting Chart Prob lem Solution The engine will not idle. 1. Replace the spark plug. 2. Clean the air filter. 3. Adjust the carburetor . 4. Adjust the throttle control. 5. Drain the fuel tank. Clean the fuel line. Replace the fuel filter . A hot engine causes a decrease in power .
32 m e l b o r P Solution When the clutc h/brake pedal is released, belt noise can be heard. 1. T emporar y belt noise does not change the operation of the unit. If belt noise is continuous, chec k the routing of the belt. Make sure the belt is inside all belt guides.
