E-1 E About RAID A RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) provides better performance a nd reliability from combi nations o f drives than is possible with the same total storage spa ce without RA ID. This Appendix describes the various RAID levels supported by Adaptec RAID contr o llers.
E-2 About RAID Spanned V olume A spanned volum e is created by joining, or concatenatin g, two or mo re d r i v e s. T h e d r i v e s d o n o t h a v e t o b e o f e q u al c a p a c it y a n d a re connected end-to-end. A s panned volume of fers no redund ancy and no perform ance advant age ov er a single drive.
E-3 About RAID RAID 5 This RAID type r equires at least thr e e drives. Like RAID 0, data is striped acr oss the drives. However , in RAID 5, parity is stor ed separately fr om data, and occupies the equivalent of one drive.
E-4 About RAID RAID 10 This dual-level RAID type is created by us ing two or more equal- sized RAID 1 a rrays to cr eate a RAID 0. Both r ead and write performance ar e improved due to array s triping. However , the performance impr ovement costs additional storage space due to the mirroring of the arrays.
E-5 About RAID RAID 50 This dual-level RAID type is created by us ing two or more equal- sized RAID 5 arra ys to create a RAID 0. The top level RAID 0 shares the load am ong the second-level RAID 5s, improving both read and write performance. Parity , used in the second level RAID 5s, provides efficient r edundancy .
F-1 F About SCSI In this Appendix... SCSI De vice Su pport F-2 Settin g SCSI IDs F-2 Changing S CSI T er mination on the Cont roller F-3 Enabling CD Dr ive Suppor t F-3 Mixing SE Devices with L VD Dev.
F-2 About SC SI SCSI De vice Suppor t The SCSI RAID contro ller is desig ned to work with Ul tra320 SCSI har d drives. In addition, the contro ller operates at re duced performance with all Ultra2 or higher SCSI drives and peripherals, as described in the table below .
F-3 About SC SI Changing SCSI T ermination on the Contr oller The default termination for the controller is Auto Mode and yo u will probably never n eed to change this setting. However , if you do need to change the termination, you can use the SCSI Select Controller SCSI Channel T erminat ion option to change the setti ng to Disabl ed .
