n To ensure that your vehicle provides maximum economy throughout a long service life, we request that you ob- serve the following suggestions: Because of its engineering design, the BMW M5 is an especially high- quality vehicle. To protect your own in- vestment, we recommend that you fol- low the break-in instructions carefully.
n Repairs Index Overview Controls Car care Technology Data Driving notes Brakes: Do not drive with your foot resting on the brake pedal. Even light but con- sistent pedal pressure can lead to high temperatures, brake wear and possibly even brake failure.
n Catalytic converter The catalytic converter reduces harmful exhaust emissions, and is designed for use with unleaded fuel only. Even minute quantities of lead would be enough to permanently damage both the catalytic converter and the system oxygen sensor.
n Repairs Index Overview Controls Car care Technology Data Antilock Brake System (ABS) The concept ABS enhances active safety by helping to prevent the wheels from locking when the brakes are applied. This is done be- cause locked wheels are dangerous.
n Antilock Brake System (ABS) Information for your safety Not even ABS can suspend the laws of physics. ABS alone cannot prevent accidents when the brakes are applied without an adequate safety interval between vehicles, if the car is driven with excessive speed in curves, or if aquaplaning occurs.
n Repairs Index Overview Controls Car care Technology Data Disc brakes Disc brakes furnish optimum decelera- tion and braking control and greater fade resistance under heavy use.
n Disc brakes Brake system Dynamic Brake Control (DBC) * If you apply the brakes rapidly, this sys- tem automatically generates maximum braking force boost and thus helps to achieve the shortest possible braking distance in "panic braking" situations.
n Repairs Index Overview Controls Car care Technology Data Winter operation The onset of winter is often accompa- nied by rapid changes in weather. Ad- aptations in driving style should be ac- companied by preparations on the vehi- cle itself to ensure that your progress through the winter remains safe and trouble-free.
n Winter operation Braking Winter road conditions substantially reduce the amount of traction available between the tires and the road surface. The resulting increases in braking dis- tance are considerable and should be kept in mind at all times.
n Repairs Index Overview Controls Car care Technology Data Power steering Cellular phones * Radio reception If there is a change in steering behavior, for instance greater steering effort or if steering becomes lighter as speed increases: Contact your BMW center immediately for an inspection.
n Information for your safety The factory-approved radial tires are matched to the car and have been se- lected to provide optimum safety and driving comfort on your car.
n Repairs Index Overview Controls Car care Technology Data Tire replacement To maintain good handling and vehicle response, use only tires of a single tread configuration from a single manufac- turer. BMW tests and approves wheel/ tire combinations.
n Tire replacement Tire rotation Do not use retreaded tires. Driving safety may be impaired by their use. This is due to the possible varia- tions in casing structures and, in some cases, to their extreme age – factors that can lead to a decrease in their du- rability.
n Repairs Index Overview Controls Car care Technology Data Wheel and tire combinations The right choice Use only tires approved by BMW. Refer to page 122 . Due to the high speeds this vehicle can reach, the use of specific brands, spec- ifications and sizes is mandatory.
n Winter tires Choosing the right tire BMW recommends winter tires (M+S radial tires) for driving in adverse winter road conditions. While tires known as all-season tires (M+S designation) pro- vide better winter traction than summer tires with load ratings H, V, W and ZR, they generally do not achieve the per- formance of winter tires.
n Repairs Index Overview Controls Car care Technology Data Snow chains * The use of narrow-link BMW snow chains on winter tires is approved only in pairs and only on the rear wheels. Comply with all manufacturer's safety precautions when mounting the chains.
n Approved wheel and tire specifications Observe the specifications for tires and wheels in the vehicle's manuals. If sizes not approved by the manufacturer are mounted, an entry in the vehicle's doc- uments may be necessary. Tire specifications Light-alloy wheels BMW M5 Summer Front: 245/40 ZR 18 8Jx18AH2 Rear: 275/35 ZR 18 9.
n Repairs Index Overview Controls Car care Technology Data To unlock Pull the lever located under the left- hand side of the instrument panel. 127 n Repairs Index Overview Controls Car care Technology Data Engine oil Checking oil level 1 Park the vehicle on a level surface. 2 Allow the engine to run at operating temperature for at least 15 seconds at idle, then shut it off.
n Engine oil Specified engine oils The quality of the engine oil is extremely important for the function and service life of an engine. Based on extensive testing, BMW recommends only certain types of engine oil.
n Repairs Index Overview Controls Car care Technology Data Engine oil Coolant Always observe all environmental protection guidelines and regula- tions when disposing of used oil. < Recommendation: Have the oil changed by your BMW center only. Continuous exposure to used oil has caused cancer in laboratory testing.
n Coolant Brake fluid Adding coolant Wait until the engine cools before re- moving the cap from the expansion tank. The needle of the coolant gauge in the instrument cluster must be lo- cated in the blue zone; otherwise, there is a danger of scalding.

n Repairs Index Overview Controls Car care Technology Data Caring for your car Washing your car You can have your new BMW washed in an automatic car wash. Car wash systems that do not employ brushes are preferable. Wipe away tough dirt and loosen and remove dead insects before washing the car.
n Caring for your car Exterior finish To provide effective corrosion protec- tion, multilayer paintwork is applied at the factory. Cataphoretic immersion priming techniques are supplemented using special body-cavity protectants, with the application of specially-devel- oped and extensively tested materials.
n Repairs Index Overview Controls Car care Technology Data Caring for your car Caring for the vehicle finish Regular washing is a preventive mea- sure against long-term effects from substances tha.
n Caring for your car Window care You can use window and glass cleaner to clean inside window surfaces and mirrors without smearing and streaking. Never use polishing pastes or abrasive (quartz) cleansers on mirror lenses.
n Repairs Index Overview Controls Car care Technology Data Caring for your car Caring for other vehicle components and materials Light-alloy wheels should be treated with alloy wheel cleaner, especially dur- ing the winter months. However, do not use aggressive products containing ac- ids, strong alkalis or abrasives.
n Caring for your car Leather care The leather upholstery * used by BMW is a natural product of the highest qual- ity, processed using state-of-the-art methods to ensure that it will maintain its high quality for years to come, pro- vided that it is properly cared for.
