1 1 Introduction Thank you for p urchasing the XPower Inverter 450 (PN: 851 -0451). The XPower 450 is part of a family of ad vanced high-p erformance power inverters from Xantrex, the leader in high-frequency inverter design.
2 2 Important Safety Information Misusing or incorrect ly connecting the XPower Inverter 450 may damage the equipment or create hazardous conditions for users. Read the following safety instructions and pay special attention to all Caution and Warning statements in the guide.
3 HEA TED SURF ACE HAZARD The XPower Inverter 450 housing may become uncomf ortably warm, reaching 14 0° F (60° C ) under exten ded high po wer operatio n. Ensure tha t at least 2 inches (5 cm) of air surround the inverter. Durin g operation, keep it away from materials that may be affected by high temperatures.
4 EXPLOSION AND FIRE HAZARD 1. Follow all instructions publishe d by the battery manufacturer and the manufacturer of the e quipment in which the battery is installed. 2. Make sure the ar ea around the batter y is well ventilated. 3. Never smoke or allow a spark or fl ame near the engine or ba tteries.
5 RISK OF D AMA GE T O EQUIPMEN T : OUTPUT IS NON-SINUSOID AL Some chargers for small nickel-cad m ium batteries can be damaged if connected to the XPower Inver ter 450 .
6 Safety features These advanced sa fety features are bu ilt into the XPower 450 : • Electronic overload protection with auto matic shutdown • Built-in internal backup DC fuse • Low battery volt.
7 3 F eatures AC p a n e l Number Featur e 1 GFCI AC Outlet The XPo wer 450 has one dual GFCI AC outlet. It allows you to plug in any combination of 120 V AC products with a total continuous power consumption o f 360 W.
8 DC panel 3 Fault Light The red FA ULT ligh t indicates that the inverter ha s shut down because of low or high ba ttery voltage, AC overload, or excessively hi gh temperature s. Not shown Audible Alarm An audible alarm warns you of a high- temperature shutd own or of an impending low battery voltage shutdown.
9 Accessories There are no accessories for this pr oduct. 2 Cooling Fan When output power is greater than approximately 50 W, the fan turns on to he lp maintain optimum operating temperature.
10 4 Installation Installing the XPower 450 requires five steps: 1. Choosing a location 2. Mounting the inverter 3. Connecting DC p ower to the inverter using e ither: • the cigarette lighter plug (if su pplied). • DC cable clips and a battery (if supplied).
11 Mounting the inverter Before mounting the inverter , please see “Choosing a location ” . T o mount the inverter: 1. Make sure the ON/OFF switch is in the OFF position. 2. Select an appropri ate mounting location and ori entation. The inverter must be orient ed in one of the following ways: • Hori zontally on a vertical surface.

13 Using the DC cable clips By directly conn ecting the power in verter to a 12 V b attery using the DC cable clips (if supplied), you ca n operate products with power requirements up to 360 W continuous. 1. Follow steps 1 and 2 under “Using the DC cable with cigarette lighter plug” to attach the ring-type connectors.
14 T o hardwire the inverter to a 12 V battery: 1. Make sure the power inve rter’s ON/OFF switch is in the OFF position. 2. Use an 8 AWG (or hea vier) wire to a maximum total length of 2 m (6.5 ' ). 3. Install a 60 A automotive fuse in the positive (red) wire, clo se to the end that will attach to the b attery.
15 4. Solder or crimp the heavy-duty terminals to the p ositive an d negative wires. Use te rminals that mate properly with the battery terminals or existing battery cable clamps. 5. Remove the nuts from the DC terminals on the inverter. 6. Place the red ring connector on the red (positive + ) DC terminal on the inverter.
16 Connecting the chassis ground The inverter has a chassis ground terminal screw on th e rear panel marked . Follow the guidelines under “Grounding locations” to connect the inverter’s chassis to the groun d. Grounding locations You must connect the chassis ground terminal to a grounding point.
17 Chassis ground screw We recommend that you attach the cable to the chassis ground screw with a ring terminal. This procedur e will ensure that the wire does not slip off the chassis ground screw . See Figu re 2 . T o connect the cable to the chassis ground scr ew: 1.
18 T esting the GFCI-protected A C outlet The outlet on the XPower 450 is a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlet. A GFCI outlet protec ts you against hazard ous electrical shocks that could be caused by dampness, faulty mechanism, worn insulation, and so on.
19 5 Operation Operating statuses This section describes normal operat ion as well as problems that could occur when you use the inv erter. If you have a problem, see “Troubleshooting” on page 24 . The XPower In verter 450 is capable of contin uously powering most 120 V AC products that use 360 W or less.
20 Inverter operation 1. When properly connected to a 12 V outlet or battery , turning the inverter switch “ON” will illumina te the green “POWER” light, an d deliver AC power to the outlet(s). 2. Plug the AC product(s) you wish to operate into the GFCI ou tlet(s) and switch them on, one at a time.
21 7. Should a defe ctive battery charging system cause the batter y voltage to r i s e t o d a n g e r ou s l y h ig h l e v el s , t h e XPower 450 wi ll automatica lly shut down. 23 6 Maintaining Battery Condition Here are some guidelines that will help to preserve your battery. Using vehicle batteries • Vehicle batteries are not de signed for repeated deep -discharge cycles, and constantly recharging a vehicle’s battery will shorten its life.
24 7T r o u b l e s h o o t i n g This section will help you identify th e source of most problems that can occur with the XPower 450 . If you have a problem with the inverter , please review this section before contacting Xa ntrex Customer Service.
25 Buzz in audio systems Some inexpensive ster eo systems have inadequate intern al powe r supply filtering and buzz slight ly when powered by the XPower 450 . The best solution is to use an audio system with a good quality f ilter. T elevision interference The XPower 45 0 is shielded to minimize inte rference with TV signals.
26 T roubleshooting r eference This section describes problems, t h eir symptoms, possible causes, and specific remedies. PROBLEM: AC product will not operate, no inverter warning lights are ON. P ossible cause Remedy Battery is defective. Check battery an d replace if requi red.
27 PROBLEM: Meas ured invert er output is too low. P ossible cause Remedy Standard "average reading" AC voltmeter used to measure output voltage, resulting in an apparent reading 5 to 15 V too low. Inverter’s "modified sine wave" output requires "t rue RMS" vol tmeter for accurate measurements.
28 PROBLEM: Battery run time is less than expec ted. P ossible cause Remedy The AC load power consumption is higher than rate d. Use a larger batter y to make up for the increased power requir ement. The battery is old or defective. Replace the battery.

P ossible cause Remedy AC product(s) co nnected is/are rated at more than the inverter’s continuous power rating; overload shutdown has occurred.
