15 Understanding Scanning Underst anding Scanning This section provides you with background on how scanning works. Y ou don’t really need to know all of this to use your scanner , but some background knowledge will help you get the most from your USC230.
16 Understanding Scanning for any active frequency within the lower and upper limit s you specify . When the scanner finds an active frequency , it stops on th at frequency as long as the transmission lasts. If you think the frequen cy is interesting, you can program it into the scanner ’s memory .

22 Setting Up Your Scanner Setting Up Y our Scanner These guidelines will help you install and set up your new scanner: • If your scanner re ceives in terference or electrical noise, move the scanner or its antenna aw ay from the source.
23 Setting Up Your Scanner 3. Install two batteries in the compartment as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked inside. 4. Replace the cover . 5. Connect the supplied AC adapter to the scanner's DC 6V to charge the batteries. (See “Using AC Power” on pag e 25.
24 Setting Up Your Scanner Cautions: • Use only fresh batteries of the required size and recommended type. • When flashes and the scanner beep s every 15 seconds, replace both batteries. • Always remove old or weak batteries. Batteries can leak chemicals th at destroy electronic circuits .
25 Setting Up Your Scanner • T o prevent damage to Ni-MH batteries, never charge them in an area where the tempera ture is above 45°C (1 13°F) or below 4°C (40°F). • If you connect an external power source to the scanner with REG . ALK. BA TT .
26 Setting Up Your Scanner Connecting an Earphone/Head phone For private listening, you ca n use the supplied h eadphone or can plug a 1 / 8 -inch (3.5 mm) mini- plug earphone (not supplied) into the he adphone jack on top of your scanner . This automatically disconnect s the internal speaker .
27 Setting Up Your Scanner Att aching the Wrist S trap T o keep your scanner sa fely close at hand, use the supplied wrist strap. Push the small loop on one end of the wrist strap through the lug on th e right side of the scanner , then thread the othe r end of the wrist strap back through the small loop to se cure it.

T o select the function labeled on a key , simply press the key . T o select the function labeled below a key , hold down on the left side of the scanner then press the key .
29 Setting Up Your Scanner L/O L/O – Lets you lock out a selected channel or skip a specified frequency . + L/O – Press quickly to lock and unlock a selected system in Scan or Scan Hold mode and review search lo ckout frequencies in Search or Search Hold mode.

31 Setting Up Your Scanner A Look At The Display The display has indicators that show th e scanner's current ope rating status. Th e display inform ation helps you underst and how your scanner operates. The dar k area shown above the icons in this illustration is the text display area.

34 Basic Operation Scanning Preprogrammed Races Before Y ou Get T o The Track Each driver ’s team has se veral differe nt frequencies they can use during a race. These frequencies can change depending on local inte rference sources or other frequency issues.
35 Basic Operation 1. Press 0 in Scan mode, rot ate the scroll control to select the race, then press E . 2. Press CAR , enter the driver ’s number , then press CAR . Or pres s CAR twice, rotate the scroll control to select the driver , then pr ess CAR .
36 Basic Operation The SYS indicators on the di splay show the systems that are currently selected . T o select or lock out a system that is not assigned to a key , press and hold while you rotate the scr oll control until the desired syst em is selec ted.
37 Basic Operation Locking/Unlocking Channels Follow these step s to lock out a channel so that it does not scan even if its system and chan nel group are selected. 1. While holding down , rota te the scroll control to select the system where the channel is stored.
38 Basic Operation Quick-S toring Channels 1. Hold on an existing channel in any system. 2. Enter the frequency you want to store. 3. T o quick-store the channel, press E . Otherwise, press No . If you enter a frequency then press E , the scanner stores it in the Qck Save Grp group in a system called Qck Save Cnv Sys .

40 Other Settings • Off : Normal scanning • On : While scanning, the scanner interrupts every 2 seconds and checks the priority channels in each unlocked system. Priority channels in lower priority key numbered systems (st arting from 1) have highest priority .
41 Other Settings • If you want to program the delete d data again, use the PC Con trol and clon ing options (see page 41). Using the PC Control and Cloning Options Use the included conne ction cable to connect your scanner to another USC230 scanner or your personal computer .
42 Other Settings • 38400 bps The baud rate is set to 38,400 bp s. • 57600 bps The baud rate is set to 57,600 bp s. Cloning the Scanner T o clone (copy) data from one USC230 scanner to a nother US.
43 Using the Menu Using the Menu The scanner’s menu let s you select options that let you set up and use the scanner . T o use the menu, press on the left side of the scanner . In most cases, the current menu p osition appears on the upper line of the menu.

54 Programming/Editing Optional Settings Programming/Editin g Optional Settings This section details the inst ructions for each of the optional pr ogramming steps referred to in “Pro gramming Radio Systems” on Page 45. Use the instructions in the appropriate section to enter or edit a setting.
55 Programming/Editing Optional Settings After selecting this optio n, press 1 - 9 to assign the system to a quick key or press No to assig n the system to no quick key , then press E . Hints: • Y ou can assign as many systems to the same quick key as you want.
56 Programming/Editing Optional Settings Notes: • If you sele ct 0, the scan ner stays on the syst em for a minimal time (only long enou gh to check current system activity). • The default setting is 2 seconds for each system. • All unlocked channels will be scanned at least once regardless of this setting.

67 Searching and Storing CTCSS/DCS Search CTCSS/DCS Search lets you search for CTCSS or DCS tones when it finds an active freque ncy in search and Close Call modes. Y ou can id entif y up to 50 CTCSS tones and 104 DCS codes. T urning this option on let s the scanner search for CTCSS/ DCS tones.
68 Searching and Storing 2. T urn the scroll control until CUSTOM Search appears, then press E to select it. The scanner sta rts custom searc h of the cu stom search range you selected, stopping on any transmission it finds and displaying the frequency .
69 Searching and Storing BAND PLAN 2 BAND PLAN 3 Note: If you want to adjust the preset custom search range to m atch to the band plan you have selected, initialize the scanner . Howev e r , initializing the scanner deletes all the preprog rammed data other than the b and plan.
70 Searching and Storing Editing a Custom Search Range Y ou can edit up to 10 custom search rang es. The names of the custom search ran ges appear on the display . The default custom search rang e names appear as CUSTO M 1 , CUSTOM 2 , and so on. 1. Press then turn the scroll control until Search For .
71 Searching and Storing Selecting a System T o store frequencies you find during Auto S tore, you must first select a system where the frequencies will be stored. 1. Press then turn the scroll control until Search For ... appears. The n press E . O ne of th e search feature options appear .
72 Using the Close Call Feature Using the Close Call Featur e Y our scanner's Close Call TM feature lets you set the scanner so it detects, displays the fre quency of, and lets you hear a nearby stron g radio transmission.
73 Using the Close Call Feature • The Close Call fe ature works bett er with some types of transmissio ns than ot hers. It mig ht not corr ectly display frequency infor mation for transmitters using a highly directional anten na (such as an amateur radio beam antenna) or if there ar e many transmitters operating at the same time in the same area.
74 Using the Close Call Feature • Set CC Override : Lets you select how the Close Call feature works with other scanning activities. If you turn this option off, when the scanner detect s a Close Call signal, CC Found! and E to Listen appear for abou t 3 seconds.
75 Using the Close Call Feature Close Call Hit s When the scanner detect s a Close Call hit, it alerts you according to the Override and Aler t settings in the previous section.
76 Search and Close Call Options Sear ch and Clos e Call Options The settings in this section affect custom searches, service searches, and Close Call operation.

82 Troubleshooting Scan won’t start. The channel might not be active. W ait for a transmission on the channel. Y ou must pres s Scan to scan. Press Scan . The squelch might need to be adjusted. Adjust the squelch threshold. See “Turning On the Scanner and Setting the Squel ch” on Page 33.
