INTRODUCTION 5 Before Use Playable Discs DVD (8 cm/12 cm disc) V ideo CD (VCD) (8 cm / 12 cm disc) Audio CD (8 cm/12 cm disc) In addition, this unit can play a DVD-R/± RW , SVCD and CD-R or CD-RW that contains audio titles, MP3, WMA or JPEG files.
6 Before Use (Continued) Precautions Handling the unit When shipping the unit The original shipping carton and packing materials come in handy . For maximum protection, re-pack the unit as it was originally packaged at the factory . When setting up the unit The picture and sound of a nearby TV , VCR, or radio may be distorted during playback.
7 INTRODUCTION 0Front Panel M/> DVD: Go to NEXT chapter/track. Press and hold for two seconds for a fast forward search. VCR: Advances the tape during the STOP mode or for fast forward picture search. X (P AUSE/STEP) Pause playback or recording temporarily/press repeatedly for frame-by-frame playback.
8 Display Window SAP Indicates when a SAP BILINGUAL broadcast is being received. DVD DVD inserted. PHOTO Photo disc inserted. VCD V ideo CD inserted. MP3 MP3 disc inserted. MUTE The speaker sound is muted. HI-FI Indicates the unit is playing back a tape recorded in Hi-Fi.
9 INTRODUCTION Remote Control TV POWER Switches TV ON and OFF . INPUT - Selects the VCR deck’s source (T uner , LINE 1, or LINE 2) in VCR mode. - Selects the TV external source in TV mode. AUX To listen to an audio source connected to the DIGIT AL AUDIO IN (OPTICAL) jack with video from LINE 1.
Rear Panel Do not touch the inner pins of the jacks on the rear panel. Electrostatic discharge may cause permanent dam- age to the unit. Caution Never throw batteries into a fire. Notes Be sure to use AAA size batteries. Dispose of batteries in a designated disposal area.
PREP ARA TION 11 Connections T ips Depending on your TV and other equipment you wish to connect, there are various ways you could connect the DVD/VCR Receiver . Use connections described on pages 1 1-14. Please refer to the manuals of your TV , VCR, Stereo System or other devices as necessary to make the best connections.
Connections (Continued) 12 Basic TV Connections Make one of the following connections, depending on the capabilities of your TV . RF coaxial connection Connect the RF .OUT jack on the DVD/VCR Receiver to the antenna in jack on the TV using the 75-ohm Coaxial Cable supplied (R) .
PREP ARA TION 13 Connections (Continued) Speaker System Connections Connect the speakers using the supplied speaker cords by matching the colors of the terminals and those of the cords. T o obtain the best possible surround sound, adjust the speaker parameters (distance, level, etc.
14 Radio Antenna Connections Connect the supplied FM/AM antennas for radio listen- ing. 1. Connect the AM loop antenna to the AM antenna connectors. 2. Connect the FM wire antenna to the FM antenna connectors. Notes To prevent noise pickup, keep the AM loop antenna away from the DVD/VCR Receiver and other compo- nents.
Follow these guidelines to select and switch among the various DVD/VCR Receiver input and output sources: • DVD/CD To view output from the DVD deck: Press DVD/CD on the remote or DVD/VCR on the front panel until the DVD indicator on the front panel lights and output from the DVD deck is viewed on the TV screen.

19 PREP ARA TION VCR Operation Setup (Continued) Setting the Clock The DVD/VCR Receiver gives you two ways to set the time and date: the Auto Clock Feature or manually . The Auto Clock feature enables the DVD/VCR Receiver to set up the clock while the DVD/VCR Receiver is turned off.
20 DVD Operation Setup General Explanation This manual gives basic instructions for operating the DVD/VCR Receiver . Some DVDs require specific opera- tion or allow only limited operation during playback.
DVD Operation Setup (Continued) Initial Settings Y ou can set your personal preferences on the DVD/VCR Receiver . General Operation 1. Press SETUP . The Setup menu appears. 2. Use v v / V V to select the desired option. The screen will show the current setting for the selected option, as well as alternate setting(s).

24 VCR Operation Normal Playback Preparation: T urn on the TV . T une the TV to the DVD/VCR Receiver output channel (CH 3 or 4) or set the TV’ s source selector to VIDEO. If a direct VIDEO/AUDIO connection is made between the DVD/VCR Receiver and the TV , set the TV’s source selector to VIDEO.
OPERA TION 25 VCR Operation (Continued) Normal Recording Preparation: T urn on the power of both the DVD/VCR Receiver and TV . T une the TV to the DVD/VCR Receiver output channel (CH 3 or 4) or set the TV’ s source selector to VIDEO.
10. Use V V to choose the SPEED option. Use b b / B B to choose the desired recording speed (AUTO, SP or SLP). AUTO mode determines how much tape is left and switch- es speed from SP to SLP , if necessary , to complete record- ing the program. There will be some picture and sound dis- tortion at the point of the speed change.
OPERA TION 27 VCR Operation (Continued) Instant Timer Recording Instant T imer Recording allows you to make a recording easily of a preset length without using the programma- ble timer . Preparation: T urn on the power of both the DVD/VCR Receiver and the TV .
VHS Hi-Fi Stereo System/ MTS Broadcast This DVD/VCR Receiver is equipped with the VHS Hi-Fi audio sound system for recording and playback. The information below gives a brief description of Hi-Fi audio and how to record and play a tape in the Hi-Fi audio mode.
OPERA TION 29 VCR Operation (Continued) T ape Counter Memory Feature Real-Time Counter Shows length of tape run in hours, minutes, and seconds. Press CLK/CNT to select the real-time counter display . Every press of CLK/CNT changes the TV screen as illustrated below .
30 DVD and Video CD Operation Playing DVD and Video CD Playback Setup T urn on the TV and select the video input source connected to the DVD/VCR Receiver . Audio system: T urn on the audio system and select the input source connected to the DVD/VCR Receiver .

To enter a mark, follow these steps. 1 During disc playback, press MARKER when playback reaches the spot that you want to memorize.
OPERA TION 33 Audio CD and MP3/WMA Disc Operation Playing an Audio CD and MP3/WMA Discs The DVD/VCR Receiver can play MP3/WMA formatted recordings on CD-ROM, CD-R or CD-RW discs. Before playing MP3/WMA discs, read the notes on MP3/WMA Recordings on right.

OPERA TION 35 JPEG File Operation V iewing JPEG Files on a Disc This DVD/VCR Receiver can play discs with JPEG files. Before playing JPEG files, read the notes on JPEG Files on right. 1. Insert a disc and close the tray . The MP3/WMA-JPEG choice menu appears on the TV screen.
