4-2 User ’s Manual L300/L300D series Using optical disc drives Operation is the same for all other opt ical di sc drives. The full-size drive provides high-performa nce executio n of CD/DVDs-based prog rams. Y ou can run CD/DVDs without an adaptor .

4-6 User ’s Manual L300/L300D series Before writing or rew riting ■ Based on TOSHIBA ’s limited compat ibility testing, we suggest the following manufacturers of CD-R/-RW and DVD-R/+R/-RW/+R W/-RAM/+R DL/-R DL disc. However , in no event does TOSHIBA guarantee the operation, quality or performance of any disc.
User ’s Manual 4-7 L300/L300D series ■ If the disc is poor in quality , dirty or damaged, writing or rewriting errors may occur . Be careful to check the disc for dirt or damage before you use it. ■ The actual number of rewrites to CD-RW , DVD-RW , DVD+RW or DVD-RAM is affected by the quali ty of the disc an d the way it is used.
4-8 User ’s Manual L300/L300D series ■ Before you enter sleep/hibernation mode, be sure to fini sh DVD-RAM writing. Writing is finished if you can eject DVD-RAM media. ■ Be sure to close all other software programs except the writing software. ■ Do not run software such as a screen saver , which can put a heavy load on the CPU.

User ’s Manual 4-25 L300/L300D series Disconnecting LAN cable T o disconnect the LAN cable, follow the steps below . 1. Pinch the lever on the connector in the computer ’s LAN jack and pull out the connector . 2. Disconnect the ca ble from the LAN hub in the same manner .
4-26 User ’s Manual L300/L300D series Heat dispersal T o protect from overhea ting, the CPU has an i nternal temperature sensor. If the computer ’s internal temperature rises to a certain level, the cooling fan is turned on or the processing speed is lowered.
User ’s Manual 5-1 L300/L300D series Chapter 5 The Keyboard The computer ’s keyboard layout is co mpatible with a 1 04/105-key enhanced keyboard. Pressing FN key an oth er keys can execute a ll enhanced keyboard function. The number of keys on your keyboar d depends on which country/region’s keyboard layout yo ur computer is configured with.
5-2 User ’s Manual L300/L300D series Function keys: F1 … F12 The function keys, not to be confused with FN , are the 12 keys at the top of your keyboard. These keys are dark gray , but function differently from the other dark gray keys. F1 through F1 2 are called functi on keys because they execute programmed functions when pressed.
User ’s Manual 5-3 L300/L300D series Hot keys Hot keys (pressing FN + a function or ESC key) let you enable or disable certain features of the computer . Press FN + F12 (Scroll Lock) to lock the cursor on a specific line. The power on d efault is off.
5-4 User ’s Manual L300/L300D series Hibernate Pressing FN + F4 switches the system to hibernation mode. Output Pressing FN + F5 changes the active display device. Brightness down Pressing FN + F6 decreases the computer ’s display panel brightness in individual steps.
User ’s Manual 5-5 L300/L300D series FN sticky key Y ou can use the T oshiba Accessi bility Utility to make the FN key sticky , that is, you can press it once, release it, and they press an “F number” key . T o start the T oshiba Accessibility Utility , click Start -> All Programs -> TOS HI BA -> Utilities -> Accessibility .
5-6 User ’s Manual L300/L300D series Keyp ad overlay Y our computer ’s keyboard does not have a separate numeric keypad but includes a numeric keypad overlay which functions like one - this is located in the center of the keyboard with t he re levant keys having dark gray letters at their front edge.
User ’s Manual 5-7 L300/L300D series Temporarily usin g no rmal keyboard (overla y on) While using the overlay , yo u can te mporarily access the normal keyboard functions without turning off the overlay : 1. Hold FN and press any other key . All ke ys will operate as if the overlay were off.

6-6 User ’s Manual L300/L300D series 8. Never expose the battery pack to abnormal sh ock, vibration or pressure. The battery pack’ s internal protective device will fail, causing it to overheat, explode, ignite or l eak caustic liquids possibly resu lting in death or serious injury .

User ’s Manual 6-1 1 L300/L300D series Replacing the battery p ack When the battery pack reaches the end of its operating life you will need to install a new one. If the Battery indicator flashes orange shortly after fully recharging the battery , the battery pack needs to be replaced.
