8 T ASCAM HS-8 F ront panel 1 POWER switch Use to turn the power on and off . This switch has a cover t o prevent misoper ation. Open the cover fr om below to access and oper ate the switch.
T ASCAM HS-8 9 Pr ess this key while recording t o put the unit in recor ding standby . Both the PAU S E and REC keys light during recording standb y . w REC key/indicator When a recor dable CF card is installed and the unit is stopped, pr ess this key to put the unit into rec ording standby .
10 T ASCAM HS-8 f JOG (SHUT TLE) key and indica tor Use to enable use of the JOG/ SHUTTLE dial. P ress this key to enable the jog operation mode of the JOG/SHU TTLE dial. When this mode is enabled , this indicator lights. Pr ess this key while pressing the SHIFT key t o enable the shuttle operation mode of the JOG/ SHUTTLE dial.
T ASCAM HS-8 11 2 − Names and f unctions of part s Rear panel g ANALOG INPUT S 1-8 connector This 25-pin D-sub connector is for analog balanced line input. The pin assignmen ts are as follo ws. 1 14 25 13 h ANAL OG INPUTS A and B connectors These A/B balanced XLR connectors are f or analog balanced line inputs (1: GND , 2: HO T , 3: COLD).

14 T ASCAM HS-8 Home Screen Pr ess the HOME key to open the Home Screen. 1 ONLINE status indicator When the ONLINE function is active and ONLINE playback mode is ON, the icon appears red . When the ONLINE function is active and ONLINE playback mode is OFF , the icon appears unlit.
T ASCAM HS-8 15 Searching forward Searching backward (high-speed search) Searching forward (high-speed search) The number shown when searching backward (shuttle operation) changes with the current speed: x2, x4, x8, x16, x32. T ASCAM HS-8 19 3 − Prep ar ati on Inser ting and remo ving CF cards Inser ting CF cards Inser t a CF card int o CF card SLOT 1 or SLOT 2 on the front panel of the unit in order t o use it for rec ording and playback. NOTE CF cards c an be inser ted whether the pow er is ON or OFF .
20 T ASCAM HS-8 About the display Adjusting the displa y angle Push the LCD TIL T btton to unlock the display , and then pull the bottom of the display f or ward t o adjust the angle.
T ASCAM HS-8 21 CAUTION Never turn the power OFF during rec ording, playback, or anything else that accesses the CF c ard. Doing so could , for example, c ause recording errors , loss of recorded data, and sudden loud noises to be output through monitoring equipment, which could result in damaged equipment and hearing loss.
22 T ASCAM HS-8 When the display (panel) is locked If one of the keys around the display is used, the f ollowing pop-up window message appears. When the display (keys) is locked If one of the transpor t keys is used when the T ransport is locked, the follo wing pop-up window message appears.
T ASCAM HS-8 23 In this chapter , we explain basic procedures f or recording and playback. The display on this unit functions as a touch-screen. Opera te the unit using its keys, switches and touch-screen display butt ons. NOTE This unit can rec ord a maximum of 8 separate tr acks and a stereo track (when the sampling frequency is set to 44.
24 T ASCAM HS-8 2 T ouch the CF MANAGE button to open the CF MANAGE screen. 3 T ouch the Q UICK button next to the FORMAT item. The follo wing pop-up message appears. NOTE If no CF card is inserted in that slot, the following pop-up message appears. 4 T ouch the OK button on the pop-up message.
T ASCAM HS-8 25 2 T ouch the CREATE PROJECT button to open the CREATE PROJECT screen. The CREATE PROJECT screen has two pages. On the first page, you can set the pr oject name, the name of the first created f older , the sampling frequency , and the sampling frequency written to BWF chunks.
26 T ASCAM HS-8 2 T ouch the REC/MON button to open the REC/MON page. T o arm tracks for rec ording, t ouch the record arm buttons below their level met ers. When a track is armed to rec ord, the button background appears r ed. NOTE T o record the stereo mix from the internal mix er at the same • time, arm LR 2MIX.
T ASCAM HS-8 27 Connecting headphones Connect headphones to the PH ONES connector on the front panel. K eep the headphones knob turned to MIN (all the wa y to the left) when connecting headphones. Headphones CAUTION Before connecting headphones, turn the PHONES knob to the minimum volume.
28 T ASCAM HS-8 See “Channel Settings ( CHANNEL SETUP)” on page 50 for details about making settings on CHANNEL SETUP screens. Monitor the input T ouch the P AN/LEV EL button on the Home Screen to open the PAN/LEVEL page or open a CHx SETUP screen (“ x ” is the channel) where you can adjust the PAN and 2 Mix LVL knobs.
T ASCAM HS-8 29 Recording oper ation limitations A limitation of this unit is that recor ding in a folder becomes impossible when the total number of files, subfolders and other items in it bec omes large. F or this reason, the follo wing things might occur .
30 T ASCAM HS-8 If the take is not currently in the selected project, a Se l ected take is i n another proj ect pop-up message appears. Message shown when the take is inside the project Message shown when the take is outside the project 5 T ouch the OK button.
T ASCAM HS-8 31 3 T ouch the knob that you w ant to adjust. U se the D ATA dial on the front panel to adjust its value . TIP Press the DA T A dial as you turn it to make adjustments in larger increments. This is useful for making rough adjustments quickly .
32 T ASCAM HS-8 8 The follo wing actions disable the flash star t function. Conduct one of them if you want to disable it. A new project or folder is loaded • The unit is put into r ecording standby.
T ASCAM HS-8 33 This unit manages audio files in projects. A CF car d contains project folders , and each project folder contains subfolders that hold audio files , which are called takes.
34 T ASCAM HS-8 Project name buttons : T ouch to select a project or projects. In addition, the numbers assigned in the order of creation on the car d are shown inside the icons. INFO button : T ouch to open a pop-up window that shows inf ormation about the project that is currently selected.
T ASCAM HS-8 35 CREA TE PROJEC T screen 1 Y ou can make the following settings on this scr een. Project Name : T ouch the Proj ect Name button to open the screen where y ou can edit the project name. The maximum number of characters for pr oject and folder names is 31.
36 T ASCAM HS-8 Caps button : Use t o input uppercase letters. Space button : Use t o input a space. <– / –> buttons : Use these to mov e the cursor .
T ASCAM HS-8 37 Rebuilding projects Rebuilding a project makes it possible to play files that were not r ecorded by this unit, including files tha t have been copied between folders on the unit and files that hav e been co pied to a CF car d fold er from a comput er (the audio files must be in formats that can be pla yed by this unit).
38 T ASCAM HS-8 3 T ouch the MAKE FOLDER button to open the MAKE FOLDER screen. F ollow the same procedur es as in “Editing the project name ” on page 35 to name the folder . NOTE Y ou cannot use the “@” symbol at the beginning of a folder name.
T ASCAM HS-8 39 5 T ouch the REBU I LD button in the pop-up menu item. 6 T ouch the OK button or press the DATA dial when a confirmation pop-up message appears. During rebuilding, a pr ogress status pop-up appears. When rebuilding complet es, the pop-up disappears.
40 T ASCAM HS-8 Erasing f olders 1 Press the PROJEC T key on the fron t panel to open the PROJECT screen. 2 Press the “ ® ” button for the project that contains the folder that y ou want to er ase to open the folder list. 3 Select the folder that you want t o erase.
T ASCAM HS-8 41 4 Select the take that you wan t to erase . T ouch the MULT I SELECT button to enable the selection of multiple takes. 5 T ouch the MENU button to open a pop-up menu. 6 T ouch the DELETE button in the pop-up menu. 7 T ouch the OK button or press the DATA dial when a confirmation pop-up message appears.

44 T ASCAM HS-8 Moreover , when switching to Subfolder mode, the following pop-up window appears explaining the restored maximum limit to the number of takes . When Folder mode is selected , the number of les created is • large. F or this reason, the number of tr acks that can be recor ded is greatly reduced .
T ASCAM HS-8 45 Playback settings (PLA Y SETUP) Use this screen to make settings r elated to playback. GENERAL page Play Mode Set how the playback of takes is handled. One T ake: Only the currently selected take is played back. All T ake: All the takes in the currently loaded f older are played back.
46 T ASCAM HS-8 MASTE R Select the master clock to use. INT (default value): Use this unit’ s internal clock. WORD: Synchronize with the w ord clock input through the WORD/ VIDE O IN connector . VIDEO: Synchroniz e with the video clock input through the WORD/ VIDE O IN connector .
T ASCAM HS-8 47 F ree once, jam sync ST A TUS This shows the time c ode generator mode of the unit and the time code frame type of the current project. GENERA T OR The top line show s the time of the current time code generator . The bottom line show s the user bits.
48 T ASCAM HS-8 Remote settings (REMO TE SETUP) Make settings for P AR ALLE connector A UX 1-3 functions and the RS-232C and RS-422 control connectors. The REMOTE SETUP screen has a PARALLEL page, an RS-232C page, and an RS-422 page. T ouch the tabs at the bottom of the screen to open the corr esponding page.

50 T ASCAM HS-8 MONIT OR button: Monitoring mix (same signal output from the PHONES connector , which includes soloed signals, etc .) CHx NAME (button) Edit the name of the channel (“x ” is the channel). Use the S hift and Caps buttons to change the available character types.

T ASCAM HS-8 55 Mark functions Adding marks Use the follo wing methods to create marks . One file (tak e) can hav e a maximum o f 99 marks, i ncluding automatically-created marks. Use the follo wing two methods to create marks . Push the • MARK key on the front panel.
56 T ASCAM HS-8 Locating to marks T ouch the “ ” button to locate to that mark. V iewing mark informa tion T ouch the LIS T I NFO button on the MARK LIS T screen to open the LIS T I NFO page. This shows a list of the number of marks by type in the currently loaded take.
T ASCAM HS-8 57 FRAME EDIT ON FRAME EDIT OFF 3 T ouch a number button to edit a mark. U se the D ATA dial to change the time for the selected number . Press the ENTER button to confirm the setting and return to the MARK LIS T screen. T ouch the CLEAR button to reset the input value .
58 T ASCAM HS-8 Y ou can control this unit using an IBM-PC-compatible keyboard with a PS/2 interface by connecting it to the KEYBOARD connector on the fr ont panel of this unit. A variety of operations are possible, but using the keyboar d is especially efficient for inputting names .
T ASCAM HS-8 59 Enabling online functions In order to use online functions, in the online function setting must be enabled. 1 Press the MENU k ey on the front panel to open the MENU screen. 2 T ouch the “SYSTEM SETUP” button to open the “SY STEM SETUP ” screen.
60 T ASCAM HS-8 In this chapter , we explain playback synchronization with external timecode. The playback of all takes in one folder on this unit can be synchronized with SMPTE timecode input through the TIMECODE IN connector on the rear panel. When synchr onized, the timecode time stamp in the take is used as the starting time of that take.
