Executive Summary Sun Microsystems, Inc. Executive Summary Use of the Web is c hanging in fundamental ways , driven by Web 2.0 applications and the thousands of people who join the global Internet every da y through a prolifer ation of new inter active devices.
Th e E vo l u ti on o f Chi p M u ltith rea di ng (CMT) Sun Microsystems, Inc. Chapter 1 T he E volution of Chip Multithr eading (CMT) By any measure , Sun’s first - generation CM T processors were an unpr ecedented success.
Th e E vo l u ti on o f Chi p M u ltith rea di ng (CMT) Sun Microsystems, Inc. • Driving Datacenter Virtualization and Eco-Efficiency Coincident with the need to scale services , many datacenters ar e recognizing the advantages of deploying f ewer standard platf orms to run a mixture of commercial and technical work loads.
Th e E vo l u ti on o f Chi p M u ltith rea di ng (CMT) Sun Microsystems, Inc. estate to build incr easingly complex pr ocessors, with instruction- le vel parallelism (ILP) as a goal.
Th e E vo l u ti on o f Chi p M u ltith rea di ng (CMT) Sun Microsystems, Inc. a result, while these designs pr ovide some additional throughput and scalability , they can consume considerabl e power and generate significant heat — without a commensura te increase in overall performance.
Th e E vo l u ti on o f Chi p M u ltith rea di ng (CMT) Sun Microsystems, Inc. Chip multithreading pr ovides real val ue since it increases the ability of the ex ecution pipeline to do actual work on any given c lock cycl e. Utilization of the processor pipeline is greatl y enhanced since a number of ex ecution threads now share its r esources.
Th e E vo l u ti on o f Chi p M u ltith rea di ng (CMT) Sun Microsystems, Inc. predecessors , while leading competitors in terms of performance , per formance per watt, and SWaP performance (as eval uated by the Space, W atts, and P erformance metric detailed later in this section).
Th e E vo l u ti on o f Chi p M u ltith rea di ng (CMT) Sun Microsystems, Inc. Designed to complement eac h other , as well as the rest of Sun’s server product line, the Sun SP ARC Enterprise T5120 and T5220 servers address the dynamic needs of the modern datacenter .
