9 F ACTS TO CONSIDER ABOUT THE LOCA TION Car ef ul ly choo se an indo or loca ti on for th e new wate r hea te r , bec au se the placement is a very important consideration for the safety of the occupants in the building and for the most economical use of the appliance.

12 As water is heated, it expands (thermal expansion). In a closed system, the volume of water will grow . As the volume of water grows, there will be a corresponding increase in water pressure due to thermal expansion. Thermal expansion can cause premature tank failure (leakage).
13 Figure 10 shows the typical attachment of the water piping to the water heater . The water heater is equipped with 3/4 inch NPT water connections. NOTE: If using copper tubing, solder tubing to an adapter before attaching the adapter to the water heater connections.

15 SEDIMENT TRAPS A sediment trap should be installed as close to the inlet of the water heater as practical at the time of water heater installation. The sediment trap should be either a tee tting with a capped nipple in the botto m outlet or other devi ce recogn ized as an effe ctiv e sedime nt trap.
16 2. A venting system should terminate at least 3 feet above any forced air inlet located within 10 feet. 3. The venting system should terminate at least 4 feet below , 4 feet horizontally from or , 1 foot above any door , window or gravity air inlet into any building.

26 VENTING SYSTEM INSPECTION At least once a year a visual inspe ction should be made of the ventin g system. Y ou should look for: 1 . Obstructions which could cause improper venting. The combustion and ventilation air ow must not be obstructed. 2.

28 LEAKAGE CHECKPOINTS Never use this water heater unless it is completely lled with water. T o prevent damage to the tank, the tank must be lled with water . W ater must ow from the hot water faucet before turning “ON” gas to the water heater .
