6 US • The instructions in this manual describe the controls on the remote. You can also use the controls on the system if they have the same or similar names as those on the remote. • The instructions in this manual are for DAV- DX170 and DAV-DX250.
7 US • Data part of CD-Extras • DVD Audios • Super Audio CD • DVD-RAMs Also, the system cannot play the following discs: • A DVD VIDEO with a different region code (page 7, 86). • A disc that has a non-standard shape (e.g., card, heart). • A disc with paper or stickers on it.
8 US Depending on the DVD VIDEO, no region code indication may be given even though pla ying the DVD VIDEO is prohibited by area restrictions. Note on playback operations of DVDs and VIDEO CDs Some playback operations of DVDs and VIDEO CDs may be intentionally set b y software producers.
9 US Use the Control Menu to select a function and to view relate d information. Press DISPLAY repeatedly to turn on or change the Control Menu display as follows: Control Menu display The Control Menu display 1 and 2 will show differe nt items depending on the disc type.

18 US After connecting all the components, speakers, and AC power cord (mains lead), output a test tone to check that all the speakers are connected correctly.
Getting Started 19 US • Use screws th at are sui table for t he wall mater ial and stre ngth. As a plaster boar d wall is e specially fr agile, att ach the screws secure ly to a beam and faste n them to the wall. Install the sp eakers on a vertic al and flat wall where reinforcemen t is applied.
20 US Connect the supplied AM/FM antennas (aerials) for listening to the radio. • To prevent noise pick up, keep the AM loop ante nna (aerial) away from th e system and ot her compone nts. • Be sure to fully extend the FM wire ante nna (aerial ). • After connecting t he FM wire an tenna (aeri al), keep i t as horizon tal as poss ible.
Getting Started 21 US First, perform the video connection, and then audio connection. With your TV’s audio output connect ed to this system, y ou can listen to TV sound throu gh the system speakers. Connecting the video cords Sends a played back DVD image to a TV.
22 US C To connect to a TV with the COMPONENT VIDEO IN jacks Connect a component video cord (not supplied ) . To use the COMPONENT VIDEO OUT jacks (Y, P B / C B , P R /C R ) instead of the video jacks, yo ur TV m onitor must be equippe d with via COMPONENT VIDEO IN jacks (Y, P B /C B , P R /C R ).

24 US To connect the AUDIO OUT jacks of a TV to the VIDEO/SAT (AUDIO IN) jacks of this system Connect a TV to th e VIDEO/SAT (AUDIO IN) jack s using an audio cord (not su pplied). When connecting a cord, be sure to match the color-coded sleeves to the appropriate jacks on the components.
Getting Started 25 US You can enjoy sound using the sp eakers of this syst em by connecting the AUDIO OUT jack s of another component. For video connection of other co mponents, c onnect directly to the TV. • If you connec t a TV to th e VIDEO/SAT j acks in St ep 3 (page 2 1), you canno t connect other compone nts to the system.
26 US • When yo u connect a VCR or digita l satellite rec eiver to the VIDEO/SAT jacks of t h is system, change the function by pressing FUNCTION repeatedly to se lect “V IDEO” or “SAT.” (When you se lect “ATT ON,” “SAT ” appears in the front panel displ ay instead of “VIDEO.
Getting Started 27 US Before connecting the AC power cord (mains lead) of this system to a wall outlet (mains), connect the speakers to the system (page 14). To turn on the system Press " / 1 . To turn off the system Press " / 1 . The system enters standby mode.

Getting Started 29 US 10 Press X / x to select the center speaker distance from the listening position, then press ENTER. You can set from 0.0 to 7 .0 meters (0 to 23 ft). • The settin g range chan ges depending on the front speak er setting. 11 Press X / x to select the surround speaker distance from the liste ning position.
30 US Positioning the speakers For the best possible surround so und, all the speakers other than the subwoofer should be th e same distance from the listening position ( A ). However, this system allows you to place the center speaker up to 1.6 meters (5 ft) closer ( B ) and the surround speakers up to 5.
Playing Discs 31 US Depending on the DVD VIDEO or VIDEO CD, some operations may be di fferent or restricted. Refer to the operation details supplied with your disc. 1 Turn on your TV. 2 Switch the input selector on the TV to this system. 3 Press " / 1 .
32 US To save the power in standby mode Press " / 1 while the system turns on. To cancel standby mode, press " / 1 once. Additional operations *1 DVD VIDEOs/DVD-RWs/DVD-Rs only. *2 DVD VIDEOs/DVD- RWs/DVD-Rs/DVD+ RWs only. *3 DATA CDs o nly.
Playing Discs 33 US The system starts playback from the point where you stopped the disc in Step 1. • If [MULTI-DISC RESUME] in [CUSTOM SETUP] is set to [OFF] (pag e 74), the resume poin t is cleared when you cha nge the fun ction by pr essing FUNCTION.
34 US 5 Select the track you want to pro gram. For example, select track [02]. Press X / x to select [02] under [T], then press ENTER. 6 To program other tracks, repeat steps 4 to 5. The programmed tracks are displayed in the selected order. 7 Press H to start Program Play.

36 US • You can set Repeat Play while t he system is stopped. After selecting th e [REPEAT] option, press H . Repeat Pla y starts. • You can qu ickly displa y the [REPEAT] status by pressing REP EAT. Each time you press R EPEAT, the [REPEAT] o ption chang es.
Playing Discs 37 US Some DVD-RWs in VR (Video Recording) mode have two types of titles for playback: originally recorded titles ([ORIGINAL]) and titles that can be created on recordable DVD players for editing ([PLAY LIST]). You can select the type of title to be played.

Playing Discs 41 US The list of tracks contained in the album appears. 3 Press X / x to select a track and press ENTER. The selected track star ts playing. You can turn the track list off by pressing MENU. Pressing MENU again will display the album list.
42 US Press CLEAR to return to normal view. • Not hing happens wh en you press C whil e playing the first im age file of the album. • If you press C / c to go t o the ne xt or prev ious image, the “Rotat ing a JPEG im age” funct ion is canc eled.
Playing Discs 43 US •[ A U T O ] : plays both the JPEG image files and MP3 audio tracks in the same album as a slide show. • [AUDIO (MP3)]: plays only MP3 audio tracks continuously. • [IMAGE (JPEG)]: plays only JPEG image files as a slide show. 5 Press MENU.
44 US Selecting an effect for image files in the slide show (JPEG only) When you play a JPEG image file, you can select the effect to be us ed when viewing the slide show. 1 Press DISPLAY twice. The Control Menu for JPEG appears. 2 Press X / x to select [EFF ECT], then press ENTER.
Playing Discs 45 US You can quickly locate a particular point on a disc by monitoring the pi cture or playing back slowly. • Depending on the DVD/VID EO CD, you may no t be able to do some of the op erations des cribed.
46 US • You cannot search for a still pict ure on a DVD-RW in VR mode. You can search a DVD by title or chapter, and you can search a VIDEO CD/CD/DATA CD by track, index, or scene. As titles and tracks are assigned unique numbers on the disc, you can select the desired one by entering its nu mber.

48 US You can divide the screen into 9 subscreens and find the desired scene quickly. 1 Press PICTURE NAVI during playback. The following display appears. 2 Press PICTURE NAVI repeatedly to select an item. • [TITLE VIEWER] (DVD VIDEO only): displays the first scene of each title.
Playing Discs 49 US Viewing the Playing Time and Remaining Time in the Front Panel Display You can check disc information, such as the remaining time, total number of titl es in a DVD, tracks in a VIDEO CD, CD, or MP3 using the front panel display (page 90).
50 US • When playing VIDEO CD s with PBC functions , the playing time is displayed. • When pla ying VIDEO C Ds without PB C functions , the track nu mber and the inde x number are dis played after the Disc name. • Y ou can also ch eck the time in formation a nd text using the Contr o l Menu.
Playing Discs 51 US x When playing a DATA CD ( MP3 audio) • T **:** Playing time of the current track • Only al phabetical letters and n umbers can be displaye d. • Depen ding on the typ e of disc being played, the system can o nly display a li mited number of character s.
52 US When playing a DVD VIDEO recorded in multiple audio f ormats (PCM, Dolby Digital or DTS), you can change the audio format. If the DVD VIDEO is recorded with multilingual tracks, you can also change the language.
Sound Adjustments 53 US • While playing a Supe r VCD on which the audio track 2 is not rec orded, no so und will come o ut when you select [2:STEREO], [2:1/L], or [2:2/R]. Checking the audio signal format (DVD only) If you press AUDIO repeatedly during playback, the format of the current audio signal (PCM, Dolby Digital, DTS, etc.
54 US You can take advantage of surround sound simply by selecting one of system’s pre- programmed sound fiel ds. They bring the exciting and powerful sound of movie theaters into your home. Press SOUND FIELD. Each time you press SOUND FIELD repeatedly until the sound field you want appears in the front panel display.
Sound Adjustments 55 US • When th e input si gnal is mult i channel source, Dolb y Pro Logic and Dolby Pro Lo gic II MOVIE/ MUSIC are cancel ed and the m ulti cha nnel source is output directly. • When the bi lingual br oadcast so und is in put, Dolby Pro Logic and Dolby Pro Lo gic II MOVIE/ MUSIC are not effec tive.
56 US To turn the surround effect off Press SOUND FIELD repeatedly until “A.F.D. AUTO” or “2CH STEREO” appears in the front panel display. You can enjoy TV or VCR sound from all speakers of this system. For details, see “Step 3: TV Hookup” (page 21) and “Step 4: Other Component Hookup” (page 25).
Sound Adjustments 57 US Reinforcing bass frequencies You can reinforce bass frequencies. Press DSGX. Bass frequencies are effectively reinforced. To turn off the sound effect Press DSGX again. • When you con nect headpho nes to the system, the DSGX function does not work.
58 US If various angles (multi-angles) for a scene are recorded on a DVD VIDEO, you can chang e the viewing angle. For example, while playing a scene of a train in motion, you can display the view from either the front of the train, the left window of the train, or from the right window w ithout having the train’s movement interrupted.
Using V arious Additional Functions 59 US You can set 2 kinds of playback restrictions for the desired disc. • Custom Parental Control You can set playback restrictions so that the system will not play inappropriate disc s.
60 US To turn off the Custom Parental Control function 1 Follow steps 1 through 3 of “Preventing playback of specific discs [CUSTOM PARENTAL CONTROL].” 2 Press X / x to select [OFF t ], then press ENTER. 3 Enter your 4-digit password using the number buttons, then press ENTER.
Using V arious Additional Functions 61 US 5 Press X / x to select [STANDARD] , then press ENTER. The selection items for [STANDARD] are displayed. 6 Press X / x to select a geographic area as the playback limitatio n level, then press ENTER. The area is selected.
62 US Area Code Changing the password 1 Press DISPLAY while the system is in stop mode. The Control Menu appears. 2 Press X / x to select [PARENTAL CONTROL], then press ENTER. The options for [PARENTAL CONTROL] appear. 3 Press X / x to select [PASSWORD t ], then press ENTER.
Other Operations 63 US You can control your TV (SONY only) with the supplied remote. Controlling TVs with the remote To control the TV You can co ntrol the TV by using follow ing buttons. You can select the TV channels by using the number buttons. To select the TV channels, press the number buttons, then ENTER.
64 US THEATRE SYNC allows you to tu rn on your SONY TV and this system, changes the system mode to “DVD,” and then switches the TV’s input source you set with one button push. Preparing for the THEATRE SYNC function Register the TV’s input source connected to this system .
Other Operations 65 US • This function is only for SONY TVs. (This function may not work on some S ONY TVs.) • If dis tance betw een TV and this system is too fa r, this function ma y not work. Ins tall the syst em near the TV. • Keep the r emote pointed in the d irection of the TV and this system while e ntering th e code.
66 US Using a digital satellite receiver or other components with a high audio output level Connect the satellite receiver to the VIDEO/ SAT jacks on the rear panel. You can also connect the components with a high audio output level (including 2V r.m.
Other Operations 67 US 6 Press X / x to select the preset number you want. 7 Press ENTER. The station is stored. 8 Repeat 1 to 7 to store oth er stations. To change the preset number Restart from Step 1. To change the AM tuning inte rval (except for Middle Eastern model) The AM tuning interval can be set to either 10 kHz or 9 kHz.
68 US 5 Press ENTER. 6 Create a name by using the cu rsor buttons. Press X / x to select a character, then press c to move the cursor to the next position.
Other Operations 69 US The brightness of the front panel display can be set to ei ther of 2 level s. 1 Press AMP MENU. 2 Press X / x repeatedly until “DIMMER” appears in the front p anel display, then press ENTER or c . 3 Press X / x to select the brightness of the front panel display.
70 US By using the Setup Display, yo u can make various adjustments to items such as picture and sound. You can also set a language for the subtitles and the Setup Display, among other things. For details on each Setup Display item, see pages from 71 to 77.
Settings and Ad justments 71 US To reset all of the [SETUP] settings 1 Select [RESET] in Step 3 and press ENTER. 2 Select [YES] using X / x . You can also quit the process and return to the Control Menu by selecting [NO] here. 3 Press ENTER. All the settings explained on pages 71 to 77 return to the default settings.
72 US Choose settings according to the TV to be connected. Select [SCREEN SETUP] in the Setup Disp lay. To use the display, see “Using the Setup Display” (page 70). The default settings are underlined. x [TV TYPE] Selects the aspect ratio of the connected TV (4:3 standard or wide).

74 US Use this to set u p playback related and other settings. Select [CUSTOM SETUP] in the Setup Display. To use the display, see “Using the Setup Display” (page 70). The default settings are underlined. x [PAUSE M ODE] (DV D VIDEO/DVD-R W only) Selects the picture in pause mode.
Settings and Ad justments 75 US To obtain the best possible surround sound, set for the size of the speakers you have connected and their distance from you r listening position. Then use the test tone to adjust the level and the balance of the speakers to the same level.
