N AVIGATING THE W EB B RO W S E R I NTERFACE 4-2 Navigating the Web Browser Interface The Bar ricade’ s management interface features a Setup Wizard and an Adv anced Setup section. Use the Setup Wizard if y ou want to quic kly setup the Bar ricade for use with a cable modem or DSL modem.
C ONFIGURING THE B AR RICADE 4-3 Making Configuration Changes Configurable parameters ha ve a dialog bo x or a drop-down list. Once a configuration change has been made on a page, be sure to clic k the “ Apply” or “Next” button at the bottom of the pag e to enable the new setting .
S ETUP W IZARD 4-4 F or accu rate timing of client filtering and log events , you need to set the time zone . Select your time zone from the dropdo wn list.
C ONFIGURING THE B AR RICADE 4-5 Cable Modem Y our ISP may ha ve giv en you a host name . If so , enter it into this field. Click “Finish” to complete the setup . T he Status page will open to allow you to view the connection status , as well as other infor mation.
S ETUP W IZARD 4-6 Fixed-IP xDSL Some xDSL Internet Ser v ice Pro viders may assi gn a fixed (sta tic) IP address for y our g atew ay . If you ha ve been provided with this infor mation, choose th is option and enter the assigned IP address , subnet mask, g atewa y IP , and DNS IP addresses for the Bar ricade.

T he Ser vice Name is nor mally optional, but may be required b y some ser vice pro viders . Leav e the Maximum T ransmission Unit (MTU) on the default v alue (1492) unless y ou hav e a par ticular reason to c hang e it.
A DV AN CED S ETUP 4-8 Advanced Setup Use the web manag ement interface to define system parameters , manag e and control the Barricade and its por ts, or monitor network conditions . The following table outlines the selections av ailable from this prog ram.

A DV AN CED S ETUP 4-10 Password Settings Use this menu to restrict access based on a password. By default, there is no passw ord. F or security you should assign one before expos ing the Bar ric ade to the Inte rn et. P assw ords can contain from 3–12 alphanumeric c haracters and are not case sensitiv e.
C ONFIGURING THE B AR RICADE 4-11 Remote Management Allows a remote PC to configure, manage, and monitor the Barricade using a standard web browser. Check “Enable” and enter the IP address of the remote host. Click “Apply.” Note: If you specify an IP address of 0.
A DV AN CED S ETUP 4-12 WAN Specify the W AN connection type provided b y your Internet Ser vice Provider , then click “More Configuration” to enter detailed configuration parameters for the selected connection type. Dynamic IP The Host Name is optional, but may be required b y some ISPs .

A DV AN CED S ETUP 4-14 PPTP P oint-to-P oint T unneling Protocol (PPTP) allows the secure remote access ov er the Inter net by simply dialing in a local point provided b y an ISP . Using the abov e screen allows client PCs to establish a nor m al PPTP session and prov ides hassle-free configuration of the PPTP client on each client PC.
C ONFIGURING THE B AR RICADE 4-15 Static IP Address If your Inter net Ser vi ce Provider has assigned a fix ed IP addre ss , enter the assigned address and sub net mask for the Barr icade, then enter the g atewa y address of your ISP . You may need a fixed address if you want to provide Internet services, such as a web server, or FTP server.
A DV AN CED S ETUP 4-16 DNS Domain Name Ser v ers map numerical IP addresses to the equiv alent domain name (e .g ., www .smc. com). Y our ISP should pro vide the IP address of one or more domain name ser vers .
C ONFIGURING THE B AR RICADE 4-17 LAN LAN IP Use the LAN menu to c onfigure the LAN IP ad dress for the Barricade and to enable the DHCP ser v er for dynamic client address allocation. Set a period for the lease time if required. F or home netw orks this may be set to “F orever”, which means there is no time limit on the IP address lease .
A DV AN CED S ETUP 4-18 R emember not to include the address of the Ba r ricade in the client address pool. Also remember to configure your client PCs for dynamic IP address allocati on. NAT Address Mapping Allows one or more public IP ad dresses to be share d by multiple inter nal users .
C ONFIGURING THE B AR RICADE 4-19 Virtual Server If yo u configure the Bar ricade as a virtual se r v er, remote users accessing ser vices such as w eb or FTP at your local site via public IP addresses can be automat i cally re directed to loca l ser v ers configured with pr iv ate IP addresses .
A DV AN CED S ETUP 4-20 Enabling Special Applications Some applications , such as Inter net g aming, videoconferencing, Inter net telephony and others, require m ultiple connections . T hese applications cannot w ork with Network Addres s T r anslation (NA T) enabled.
C ONFIGURING THE B AR RICADE 4-21 Firewall The firewall does not significantly affect system perfor mance , so we advise enabling it to protect your netw ork users . Select “Enable” and click the “ Apply” button to open the Firew all submenus .

S ETTING U P TCP/IP TO W ORK WITH THE B AR RICADE 5-36 Here is what to do: 1. Pull down the Apple Menu. C l ick “Control P anels” and select TCP/IP . 2. In the TCP/IP dialog bo x, make sure that “Ether net” is selected in the “Connect Via:” field.
