1 CHAPTER 1 Product Overview Features and Benefit s Avocent DSR ® switches combine analog and digital tech nology to provi de flexible, centralized control of data center servers and facilitat e the OA&M (operations, activation and m aintenance) of remote branch offices where trained operators may be unavailable.
2 DSR Switch Installer/User Guide The DSRIQ-SRL (serial) module is a DCE device that provides the primary interface between a serial device and a DSR switch. It provides VT1 00 terminal emulation, break suppression and port history in a compact, convenient module.

4 DSR Switch Installer/User Guide Safety Precautions To avoid potential video and/or key board problems when using Avocent products: • If the building has 3-phase AC power , ensure that the co mputer and monit o r are on the same phase. For best results, they should be on the same circuit.
5 CHAPTER 2 Installation The DSR switching system requires connectivity to a server runni ng the DSView Server software. DSView software allows a user to view and control target devices (one at a time) attached to the DSR switching system. For more information on the DSView software, see the DSView Installer/User Guide.

8 DSR Switch Installer/User Guide Connecting the DSR Switch Hardware NOTE: The DSR switch may be rack mounted in a 1U configuration. T he DSR switch does not support a 0U configuration. T o connect and power up your DSR switch: 1. Power down the target device(s) that will be part of your DSR switching system.

10 DSR Switch Instal ler/User Guide V erifying the Connections DSR switch The front panel of the DSR switch features two LE Ds indicating th e Ethern et connection. The top green LED is the Link indicator. It will illuminate when a valid connection to the network is established and blink when there is activity on the port.

13 Local Port Operation Controlling Y our Syste m at the Local Port The DSR switch includes a local port on the back. This port allows you to connect a keyboard, monitor and mouse to the switch for dir ect access. The DSR switch uses the OSCAR ® graphical user interface, which has intuitive menus to configure your system and select target devices.

The status flag on your d esktop displays Free . Sof t switching Soft switching is the ability to switch target de vices using a hotkey sequen ce.
16 DSR Switch Instal ler/User Guide Alt+X Closes current dialog box and returns to previous one. Alt+O Selects the OK button, then returns to the previous dialog box. Enter Completes a switch ope ration in the Main dialog box an d exits the OSCAR interface.
Chapter 3: Local Port Operation 17 Configuring OSCAR Interface Menus You can configure your DSR switching system from the Setu p dialog box within the OSCAR interface. Select the Name s button when initially setting up your DSR sw itching system to identify target devices by u nique names.

Chapter 3: Local Port Operation 21 Assigning device types While the DSR switch automatically discov ers attached cascade switches, you will need to specify the number of ports on the cascad e switch through the Devices dial og box. You will see an Sw-4, Sw-6, Sw-8, Sw-16 or Sw-24 appear in the Type category for the cascade switch.

24 DSR Switch Instal ler/User Guide Controlling the st atus flag The status flag displays on your desktop and shows the name or EID number of the selected target device or the status of the select ed port.
Chapter 3: Local Port Operation 25 T o determine how the st atus flag is displayed: 1. Select Name or EID to determine what information will be displayed. 2. Select Displayed to show the flag all the time or select Ti m e d to display the flag fo r only five seconds after switching.

34 DSR Switch Instal ler/User Guide Viewing and disconnecting user connections You can view and disconnect users through the User Status dialog box. The username (U) will always be displayed; however, you can display ei ther the targ et device nam e or EID number to which a user is connected.

Displaying version information The OSCAR interface enables you to display the ve rsion number of the sw itch firmware and any auxiliary devices connected to the switch.

39 CHAPTER 4 T erminal Operations The Console Menu Each DSR switch may be configured at the ap pliance level through the Console menu interface accessed through th e SETUP port on the back of the switch. All terminal comman ds are accessed through a terminal or PC running termin al emu lation software.

45 APPENDICES Appendix A: FLASH Upgrades The DSR switch FLASH upgrade feature allows you to update your appliance with the latest firmware available. This update can be performe d us ing th e DSView software or using a Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) server.

When the upload is compl ete , the DSR switch will reset and upgrade the internal subsystems. 1 1. Once the upgrade is complete, a verifi ca ti on message will appear on-screen.
Appendices 47 Appendix B: Using DSV iew Sof tware Over a Modem Connection An external modem may be attached to the DS R switch. This modem may be used to access the switch when an Ethernet connection is not available. A modem/PPP dial-up connecti on must be establishe d before the remote oper ation is enabled.
48 DSR Switch Instal ler/User Guide Appendix C: Using DSRIQ-SRL Modules The DSRIQ-SRL module is a serial -to-VGA converter which permits VT100-capabl e devices to be viewed from the DSR switch local po rt or by using the DSView software. The actual serial data is not accessed, but is merely displayed.
