8 1 FRITZ!WLAN USB Stick N 2.4 An Overview FRITZ!WLA N USB Stick N 2.4 is a WLAN adapter for the Univ ersal Serial Bus (USB). With the FR ITZ!WL AN US B Sti ck N, you can conn ect your com puter d i- rectly with a WLAN access point, for exam ple, with a FRITZ!B ox WLA N by AVM.

13 As soon a s you c onnect the FRI TZ!WLAN USB Sti ck N to your c omputer, the security settings of your WLAN are im- plem ent ed in th e FRITZ !WLAN c o ntr ol sof twa re and then deleted from the Stick. The AVM Stick & Surf logo appears and a WLAN connection to your FRITZ!Bo x is estab lished automatically.
14 3 I nstalla tio n Installing F RITZ!WLAN USB Stick N The FRITZ!WLAN USB Stick N can be installed in the operating systems Windows 7 (3 2-bit and 64-bit edi tion), Wind ows Vista (32-bit and 6 4- bit edi tion) an d Wind ows XP (32-bi t and 64- bit edi tion).

WLAN US B Stick N will be in stalled now. If you are prom pted to do so, i nsert t he FRITZ!WLA N USB Stick N CD an d foll ow the i nstruc- tions on the sc reen.
16 5. Then click “Y es” (Windows 7) or “C ontinue” (Windows Vista) in the “Use r Account Control” dia- log. 6. In the “Found New Hardw are” window , select “Loc ate and install driver software (rec ommended)”.

18 5. Insert the FRITZ!WLAN USB Stick N CD and select the option “In stal l software autom atical ly (rec ommen d- ed)”. Confirm with “C ontinue ”. If an additional Windows dialog ask s if you want to install soft ware not di gitally signed by Microsoft , click the “Continue Anyway” bu tton.
19 4 The FRITZ!WLAN C ontro l Software Establis hing and Clearing WLAN C onn ections With the F RITZ! WLAN U SB St ick N y ou can esta blish wirel ess ne twork connections (WLANs) with various WLAN devices. The FRITZ!WLAN co n- trol software is av ailable to manag e all these WLAN connections.

21 4.2 Estab lishing a WLAN C onnection With FRITZ! WLAN you can establish WLAN connect ions to WLAN remo te sites (access points), whi ch c an provid e ac- cess to DSL, to prin ters, t o mobile ph ones , PDAs, a nd even to other WLAN clients. Direct c onnections are also possi- ble to other F RITZ!WLAN USB Sticks.

23 2. Enter the W LAN k ey in the “W LAN k ey” fie ld. All other WL AN parties o f the ad- hoc connectio n must also enter this k ey. See also the encr yption instructions in the section “Encryption” from page 33. C onfirm the se ttings configur ed earlier for the ad -hoc network.

25 5 Microsoft WLAN Ser vic e Establis hing and Clearing WLAN C onn ections In Windows 7, Windows Vi sta and Windows XP wi th Ser vic e Pack 2, the Microsoft W LAN ser vice WZ C (Wireless Z ero Configuration) can be used to man age w ireless d evic es rathe r than the FRI TZ!WLAN pro gram.

27 Esta blishing a WLAN C onnec tion (Windows Vista) T o establish a WLAN connect ion in Windows Vista using Microso ft WLAN Servic e (“autom atic WLAN c onfigu ra- tion”), work through the fol lowing step s: 1. Click th e Microso ft WL AN icon i n the not ificat ion ar ea of the task bar and select the option “Connect to a netwo rk”.

WP A2 is a n exte nsi on of the f ami l- iar security mech anism WP A (Wi-Fi Protected Acc ess). The main fea ture of the extension o f WP A to W P A2 is the AES-C CM encryption proc ess.

Unin stalling th e WLAN Adapter Soft ware The AVM FRITZ!WLAN s oftware is installe d, but every time Windows 7/Vista/X P is restarted , the Mi crosoft WLAN control is applied , no matter wh ich sett ings were co nf i gu re d b e fo re .
40 Inst alling t he Lates t Servic e Pack s The FRITZ!WLAN USB Stick N i s detected automatic ally in the W indow s XP oper atin g sys tem. How ever , the devic e is not fully functional . Possib le Cause The necess ar y service packs have not been installed.
41 8.2 WLAN C onnection Is Not Es tab lished Make sure that the se ttings in the WLAN ac ces s poin t and in th e FRITZ!WL AN control sof tware agree wit h the en tries in th e following table.
