7 Unlocking Y our De vice Screen 䊳 T o unlock your phone from th is screen, touch and drag the lock icon across the screen. Making Y our First Call 1. From the Home s creen, tap to access the onscreen dialpad. • If your device is locke d, touch and drag the lock icon to the right.
8 Setting Up Y our V oicemail Y our device automatically transfer s all unanswered cal ls to your voicemail, eve n if your device is in use or turned off. Y ou should set up your Voicemail and personal greeting as soon as your device is activated. Always us e a password to protect against unauthorized access.

10 Key Fu nctions 1. Status Bar Icons provide inform ation about your d evice’ s status and options, such as signal strength, wireless technology , ringer se tting, messaging, and battery charge. 2. Display Screen displays all the information needed to operate your device, such as th e call status, the Contacts list, and the date and time.
11 1. Camera Lens allows you to take pictures and videos using the built-in 2.0 megapixel camera. 2. External Speak er lets you hear different ringers and sounds and the voice of the other party in speakerphon e mode.
12 8. Camera Button lets you activate the camera and camcorder to take pictures and videos. Viewing the Display Screen The display screen prov ides inf ormation about your device status and options.
13 GPS Location On – De vice location f eature is on and available for lo cation-based services su ch as GPS Navigation (see pa ge 123). GPS Communicating – De vice location f eature is on and communicating. Wi-Fi Connected – Wi-Fi is connected, active and communicating with a Wireless Access Point (W AP).
14 T ur ning Y our Device On and Off T u rning Y our Device On 䊳 Press and hold . Once your device is on, it ma y display “Searchi ng for Service.” When your device finds a signal, it ent ers standby mode – t he device’ s idle state. At this poin t, you are ready to begin making and receiving calls.
15 T ur ning Y our Device Of f 1. Press and hold for two seconds until you see the Phone options menu. 2. Ta p ( Power off ) and then tap OK to power off the device. Y our screen remains blank while your device is of f (unless the battery is charging).
16 Charging the Batter y Keeping track of your batter y’ s charge is important. If your battery level become s too low , yo ur device automatically turns off and you will lose any inform ation you were just working on.
17 Extendi ng Y our Batter y Li fe Active applications, light le vels, Bluetooth usage and GPS functional ity all act to drain your ba ttery. The following is a list of helpful tips that can help conserve your batter y power: • Reduce your backlight time.
18 • Search ( ) displays the Quick Search box that you can use to search for a key term both on the phone and online. See “Search Key” on page 18. – For exam ple, entering the word “P a”, will display any matching entries from your device’ s Contacts list, current dev ice applications, or from any online We b page via Google search.
19 Using Y our Device to Search Use the Google Search box to manually search for a term on both your device and on the Web . 1. Press to launch the Google Search box. 2. T a p to select a search area. • All : searches your device, the Web, and th e Android Market for your search term.
20 Note: T o hide the onscreen keyboard and see more of your search matches, press . 3. T a p a match from the l ist of suggestions, phone search results, or previously chos en search ma tches. Once touched, the item opens in the appropriate applic ation.
21 Naviga tion and Customization Y our phone is a touch-sensitive device which allows you to not only select an onscreen opti on wi th a single tap, but a lso sc roll through long menu lists. Simply slide up and down through the display with your fingertip.
22 • Notification area displays icons a ssociated with end-user notifications such as: email me ssages, calls (missed, c all in progress), new voicemail, upcoming events, a USB connection, and text/MMS messages. See “Using the Notifications P anel” on page 31.
23 • Page Navigation is a visual indic ati on of the cu rrent ly act ive pa ge. The onscreen dots (located at the bottom left and right of the screens) indicate your current page location. – When on the Home Sc reen, two dots appear at both lo cations (this indicates there are two pages at either side of the current page).
24 Applications The following i s a listing of some of the applica tions avai lable using the Applications tab. Application Icon s Books : Read eBooks from the web-based Google Books service. Browser – Launches the Web browser . The browser is fully optim ized and comes with ad vanced features t o enhance Internet browsin g on your device.
25 Note: The Email application includes access to both Exchange Ser ver-based email and other Internet-based email providers such as Y ahoo! and Gmail. Music – Launches the built-in Music Player (page 119). My Files – Lets you view support ed image files and text files on your microSD card (page 85).
26 Customizing Y our Home Screen Y ou can customize your Home Sc reen by doing the followin g: • Creating Shortcuts • Adding and Removing Widgets • Repositioning Widgets • Creating Folders • Changing the Wallpaper Creati ng Shor tcuts Shortcuts are diff erent than the c urrent Home Screen Wi dgets that only launch an application.
27 Note: The same sh ortcut can be added to any of the available screens (Home or Extended). Th e application you add to the screen wil l still appear in the Applications tab. 6. While still holding the onscree n icon, position it on the current screen.
28 Addi ng and Remo vi ng Wid gets Widgets are se lf-contained appli cations that reside in either your Applications tab or on the Home or Extended scre ens. Unlike a shortcut, this widget appears as an o nscreen applica tion. Note: T o move a widget from one screen to another, it must first be deleted from its current screen.

Note: Starred contacts ar e those Contact entries tagged as very important.
30 Menu Naviga tion Y ou can navigate through a menu by using your finger on the screen and by using the keyb oard navigation/arrow keys. Selecting Men u Items Us ing Y our Fing ers As you navigate through the menu, you activate menu options by tapping the onscreen entry .
31 Using the Notifications P anel The Notifica tion area indicates new message events (data sync status, new messages, calendar ev ents, call status , etc). Y ou can expand this area to provide more detailed informa tion about the current onscreen no tification icons.
32 Alter n ating be tween Swype and A ndroi d Keyboard T o alternate between Swype and Android Keyboa rd input methods: 1. From a screen where you can en ter text, tap the input field until the Edit text screen displays. 2. Ta p Input method and select Swype or Android K eyboard .
33 • T o enter contractions, move your finger over the apostrophe. • T o correct a misspelled word, double-tap on the word you want to change and then tap to erase a single character .
34 • CAPS/AL T : When in ABC mode, this key changes the capitalization of the subsequent entered characters. When in SY M mode, this key displays additional sy mbol characters. • Te x t I n p u t m o d e : There are two available modes: 1 23 ABC and SY M .
35 T o enter numbers and symbols: 1. T a p to enter the SYM (symbol) mode. 2. T ouch the key for the number or symbol you want to enter . 3. T ap to enter alternate symbols displaye d at the top of the key . To e n t e r t e x t : This example shows a user entering the word “there”.
36 Androi d Keyboar d Over view Entry field : a field where text, numbers, or other characters can be entered. Suggested W ord choices : a row of selectable word choices based on the current set of entered te xt. T ap an onscreen choice to insert the selection into your text entry fi eld at the current cursor position.
37 Note: It is recommended that to avoid incorrect conversion, you use this feature in an area relatively free from background noises. ABC Mode In ABC mode, you can enter only lette rs from the onscre en keyboard. The text mode key shows . 1. Select the ABC mode ( ).
38 Creating a Google Account Y ou will need a Google accoun t to access several dev ice features such as Gmail, Google Maps, Google T alk, and the A ndroid Market applica tions. Before you are able to access Google applications, you must enter yo ur account info rmation.
39 Section 3: Making and Ans wering Ca lls Making Calls 1. From the Home screen, tap . – or – From the Home screen, tap ➔ . 2. Enter a phone number usin g the onscreen dialpad and tap . • If you make a mistake wh ile dial ing, ta p to er ase the num bers.
40 Answ ering Calls 䊳 T ouch and drag to th e right to answer an incoming call. Tip: T o silence an incoming call ringer, press either the up or down Volume button. Y our phone notifies you of inco ming calls in the fol lowing ways: • The phone rings or vibrates.
41 Calling Emergency Numbers Y ou can place calls to 911 from the dialpad. Enter , even if your phone is locked or your account is restricted. Note: When you place an emergency call, your device automatically enters Emergency mode. During an emergency call, press to display your options.
42 Call Waiting When you’re on a call, Call Waiting alerts you to i ncoming calls by sounding a tone (beep). Y our screen informs you that another call is coming in and displays the caller’ s phone number (if it is available a nd you are in digital mode).
43 In-Call Options Once you initiate a ca l, you will see three onscreen options. • End call ( ) to end the current call. (T ouch and drag to the right .) • Speaker ( ) to route the device’ s audio through the speak er (On) or through the earpiece (Off).
44 Note: T ouch and dra g Dialpad ( ) up to use the onscreen dialpad to enter additional numbers, for example, an extension or access code. For example: When you call your bank’ s 800 number , use your dialpad to enter your account number and PIN. End-of-Call Options 1.

If prompted, ta p a destinatio n for your new contact to synchronize. • The new conta ct can be created in either your Google account (Gm ail) , or y our Corporate account (Out look-Excha nge Serv er). Note: Y ou will not see the above option to select a destination unless you have previously established a Google or Corporate account.
46 Dialing a numb er from the Favorites tab is similar to dialing from the Contacts tab. (See “Diali ng From the Contacts List” on page 45.) Assigning F av orites Only an existing Contacts entr y can be assigned as a Favorite contact. T o assign a Contacts entr y as a Favorite: 1.
47 Section 4: Settings The Settings menu can be ac cessed by one of two ways: 䊳 From the Home screen, press and tap . – or – From the Home screen, tap ➔ .
48 Wi-Fi Setttings Once Wi-F i is set up for c onnectivity , the phone automatica lly uses a Wi-Fi connection when one is av ailable for data se rvices. 1. From the Home screen, press and tap ➔ Wireless & networks ➔ Wi-Fi settings . 2. All the availabl e Wi-Fi c onnections display with an icon to the right of the connection.
49 Activating the Device Name 1. Activate Bluetooth. 2. From the Home screen, press and tap ➔ Wireless & networks ➔ Bluetooth settings ➔ Device name . 3. Press to erase the current device name and en ter a new dev ice name. 4. Ta p OK to confirm the setting.
50 Vir t ual Pri va te Networ k (VPN) Settings Using this menu you can set up and manage Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). Note: Before you can use a VPN you must establish and configure one. Adding a VPN 1. From the Home screen, press and tap ➔ Wireless & networks ➔ VPN settings .
51 3. Ta p International Dialing. 4. T a p the entry field and pr ess from the onscreen keyboard to delete t he previous value. 5. Enter a new value and tap OK . 6. Ta p North American d ialing to reactivate the feature. This disables the International Dialing field.
52 Warning!: 911 Emergenc y Calling TT Y users should make emergency calls by other means, including T elecommunications Relay Services (TRS) , analog cellular , and landline communications. Wir eless TT Y calls to 9 1 1 ma y be corrupted when r eceiv ed by public safety answering points (PS APs), rendering some communications unintelligible.
53 • Only when no t in Silent m ode : your device only vibrates for notifi cations an d alerts when Silent mode is not acti ve. Note: The Phone vibrate setting is independent of other call sound settings. For example, if you enable Silent mode with Phone vibra te, your phone will not play a ringtone, but will vibrate for an incoming call.
54 2. Ta p Noti ficati on rin gton e . 3. T a p a notification ringtone from the availabl e list. The ringtone then briefly plays when selected. 4. Ta p OK to assign a ringtone.
55 Window Anim ation This feature provides the use of animation when onsc reen windows are opened and closed . If deactivated, windows pop on and off and no tran sitions are applied. 1. From the Home screen, press and tap ➔ Display . 2. Ta p Animation and select No animations , Some anim ations , or All animations .
56 Adjusting the Date and Time Y our phone obtains its time and date information by using the network-prov ided date, time, and ti me zone. These values can be manually al tered. 1. From the Home screen, press and tap ➔ Date & ti me . 2. Ta p Auto mati c to disable the feature.
57 Note: T urning Location on allows the network to detect your position using GPS technology, making some mobile applications and ser vices easier to use. T urnin g Location off disables the GPS location function for all purposes except 911, but will not hide your general location based on the cell site serving your call.
58 Y our Devic e’s Scr een Lock Featur e Locking Y our Scr een When your device is locked, yo u can only receiv e incoming calls or make calls to 911. 䊳 Press . Locking the screen prevents accidental screen touches from ac tivating phone functions.
59 1. Draw the unlock pattern. 2. Ta p Change screen lock and redraw the saved pattern. 3. Ta p None . 4. Ta p Set up screen lock and select Pattern , then recreate a pattern.
60 Note: The Unlock Pattern applies if the Require Pattern setting is enabled. 2. Ta p Emergency call to reveal the Em ergency dialpad to place your emergency call. • Draw your unlo ck pattern to rega in access to the full dialer and unlock the device.
61 Managing Y our Available Memor y Y ou can manage the information and configuratio n related to both your microSD card and built-in storag e memory . The available de vice memor y provided by these t wo locations is called Internal phone storage . T o vi ew your Device’s total available m emory: 1.
62 Unblockin g Unknown Inst allati ons There may be inst ances where y ou choose to insta ll applications or packs from sources other than the Android Market. Before these applic ations can be installed, you must allow the installation of "non -Market applications".
63 Manage R unning Ser vices This service is an efficien t method for managing po wer consumption and processor/memory resource s. Processes can be stopped until the phone is restarted. T o stop a curre ntly running ser vice: 1. From the Home screen, press and tap ➔ Applications ➔ Running services.
64 • USB Debugging is used f or deve lopment purposes. When activated , this allows de bugging tools on a computer to communicate witht his device t hrough a USB c onnecti on. •S t a y a w a k e is used for developmen t purposes. Whe n you activate this feature, the sc reen does not dim or lock whi le the phone is charging.
65 5. Ta p Sign in . Y our phone communica tes with the Google servers to confirm your information. Y our existing Gmail account then appears within the Managed accounts area of the screen. • Any changes or updates to yo ur Gmail accoun t are then automat ically up dated.
66 3. T ap the parameters you wish to synchronize. Account settings allows you to conf igure the current email account settings. • General settings allows you to co nfigure: – Account name displays the name used by the device to track th e account.
67 2. From the Home screen, press and tap ➔ Accessibility . Note: Y ou must first install a scr een r eader from the Andr oid Mark et such as Kickback, Soundback, or T alkback in or der for this feature to work. 3. Ta p Accessibility then select a service for which you want to log data.
68 • Build n umber displays the software, build number . • Hardware version display s the hard ware vers ion for th is devi ce. Resetting Y our Phone Resetting th e phone restor es all the factory defaults, includ ing the ringer types and display se ttings.
69 Section 5: Histor y Viewing Call Log Call Log (Histor y) is a list of the phone numbers (or Contacts entries) for calls yo u placed, accepte d, or missed.
70 3. T a p the Missed call entr y to open the Call log screen. Call Log Options This list provides easy access to redial an entry , or you can also choose to access two types of history entry lists depending on how they are touched. • Highlight an entry from the list and tap to quickly redial the selected entry .
71 • T ap a contact entry name or ta p an entry to display the call options screen: – Call information (Incoming/Outgoin g call, and Missed call information) provides the tim e and date of the call and its duration. – Call [Name or Number] allows you to redial th e entry by name or number .
72 3. Ta p t h e First name and Last name fields and ente r a name for the contact. 4. Ta p Done when you finish enteri ng information for the contact. Note: The option to select a destination is only available if you have previously established a Google or Corporate account on the device.

74 5. Ta p t h e Phone number field and enter a phone number using the onscreen dialpad. 6. From the phone numbers area, tap to create a new empty Phone number field within the sel ected phone number category.
75 3. T o synchronize Gmail Contacts, tap Sync Contacts . A green checkmark indicate s the feature is enabled. – or – T o synchronize Corporate Contacts, tap Sync Contacts .
76 Contacts Menu Options 1. Press and ta p ➔ . 2. T ouch and hold an entry and select from the a vailable contact menu options: •V i e w c o n t a c t to view the Contact’s overview screen. • Call contact to call a Con tact's available numbe r .
77 Note: Prior to using this feature, Bluetooth must first be enabled, and the recipient’ s device must be visible. Only a Contact’ s information can be sent via Bluetooth. No other file type (video, image, or audio) can be sent using Bluetooth. Editing a Contacts Entr y 1.

79 Adding Entries to Y our Fa vorites The Favorites tab is a listing that can help you qu ickly access your most used or pref erred Contacts entries. 1. Press ➔ and tap . 2. T o uch and hold the entr y name from the Cont acts tab listing. 3. Fro m t he Contacts Entry context menu, tap Add to favorites .
80 Section 7: T ools Before Y ou Be gin Prior to using Google applicatio ns such as calendar , you will need to have an active Go ogle account (page 39). Google Calendar is an application that synchroniz es new and existing entries between your pho ne and y our online Google account.
81 3. T ap the green checkmark to tog gle it off th en back on. (See “Synchronizing Y our Corporate Account” on page 65.) Configuring Calendar Settings 1. Press ➔ and tap . 2. Ta p ➔ Settings . 3. T a p an onscreen option: • Calendars displays the currently ma naged accounts.
82 Note: T o synchronize calendar events among your Google and Corpora te accounts, make sure they are being managed by your device (page 64). 2. T a p a day to which you woul d like to add an ev ent. • The default vi ew for the Calenda r is the Month view .
83 • Google/Gm ail are calend ar entries that are sy nchronized between your device and yo ur online Google acco unt. 8. Ta p OK to confirm the selection.
84 2. T o view a Calendar even t farther out, tap eith er Week or Month . Note: If in the Month view (tab), days containing calendar e vent s are indic ated by a blue triangle. T ap a da y from this view to displa y a list of e vent within the Day tab.
85 My Fi les My Files allows you to view a list from which you can launch a file if the asso ciated application is alrea dy on your phone (ex: MP4 and DivX). Note: The best r ecoding setting for MP 4 video pla yback on this device is H.2 64 for Andr oid™ or PSP™.
86 2. Ta p ( Alarm ) to launch the alarm scre en. Note: Upon your first launch of the Alarm Clock application, two alarm presets are set up by default and ready for you to customize. These alarms are turned off by default. 3. Ta p ( Add alarm ) to activate an alarm.
87 Note: The number of hours and minutes left before the alarm goes off is briefly displayed onscreen after you set the new alarm time. 6. Ta p t h e Repeat field to selec t a re peating status for the alarm. • Place a gr een checkmark adjacen t to the desir ed repetitio n days and tap OK .
88 ThinkFree Office ThinkFree Office Mobile for Android is a Microsoft Office compatible of fice suite that provide s a central place fo r managing your document s online or of fline. 1. Press and tap ➔ ( ThinkFree Office ). 2. Read the End User License Ag reement, then tap Accept ➔ Activate now to activate Thi nkF ree on your device.
89 T o back up stored text messages: 1. Press and tap ➔ . 2. Select the text messa ge from the li st to view the message thread. 3. T o uch and ho ld on a por tion of the te xt messa ge from the string. The Message options context menu appears. Note: Y ou can back up stored text messages by forwarding them to your own phone number .
90 Updating Y our Profile This option allows you to automati cally upda te your on line user profile informati on. If you choose to change your user name and select a new one online, you must update the user name on your phone. 1. Press ➔ and tap ➔ About p hone ➔ System Updates ➔ Update Pro file .
91 Section 8: V oice Ser vices Import ant!: T he V oice Control (Speech to Action) feature will not launch if you are currently in an active menu. V oice Dialing Use Voic e Dialer , the built-in au tomatic speech rec ognition (ASR) software, to dial a phone number in your Contacts or to launch phone functions.
92 • If the loca tion is not r ecognized or th e name does not hav e a phone number stor ed in Contacts, you will see an onscreen l ist of op tions. – If a name has onl y a single numb er , o r if you know th e name but are not su re which number to cal l, say “ Call ” follo wed by the name only.
93 V oice R ecogn izer Settings 1. Press ➔ and tap ➔ Voice input & output . 2. Ta p Voice recogniz er settings . 3. Configure the available opti ons to alter the settings associated with this feature. • Language sets the language t o use for voice in put and outp ut.
94 V oice Search Voice Search works similarly to t he Voice Dialer . It uses built-in voice recogniz er software to liste n to your spoken words, convert those to text , and then launch a Google search usi ng that text. 1. Press and ta p ➔ ( Voice Search ).
95 Section 9: microSD Card Y our Device’ s microSD Card and Adapter T he mi cr oSD Car d Y our phone is equippe d with a preinst alled 2GB SDHC (Secure Digital High Capa city) memory ca rd. It allows you to store images, videos, mu sic, and voice data in your p hone.
96 Note: Do not over-insert the card as this can damage the contact pins. Note: Be sure to use only recommended microSD cards (<32GB). Using non-recommended microSD cards could cause data loss and damage your device. Note: The microSD card and its adapter can be easily damaged by improper operation.
97 Important!: DO NOT r emo ve a micr oSD card while the de vice is accessing or transferring fi les. Doing so will re sult in loss or damage of data. Make sur e yo ur battery is fully charged before using the micr oSD car d. Y our data may become damaged or lost if the bat tery runs out while you ar e using the micr oSD card.
98 1. With the microSD card instal led, connect yo ur phone to your computer using a compatib le USB cable. (Wait for the connection to establi sh. When connected, the host com puter automatically detects your phone.) 2. The USB icon ( ) displays in the top left Notifica tions area on your screen.
