12 Safety Safety belts Three-poi nt inertia-reel safety belts are pro- vided fo r all seats. Resea rch has establi shed that it is danger- ous for re ar-seat passen gers not to wea r their safety belts.
13 Safety Correct p osition for safety bel t • The l ap portion of the belt should be pulled as tig htly as comf or table and as low as po ssible acros s the hips, so that i t is jus t touching the t op of the thig hs. The should er belt shoul d be well i n on the should er but no t touching the n eck.
14 Safety Front saf ety belts Fasten th e belt by pu lling the belt a nd insert- ing the tongue in the buckl e. Check that it is securel y fastened. Grasp the s houlder belt c lose to the buck le and pull the belt towa rds the shou lder to tighten t he lap belt p art.
15 Safety Safety belt us e during pregnancy Pregnant w omen must always wear a safety b elt to protect bo th themselves and the unbo rn child. The lap portion of the belt shoul d be worn as low as poss ible across the hips – below the abdomen th roughout the p regnancy.
16 Safety Safety b elt, rear se at Three-poi nt safety belts a re provided for a l l three rear-sea t passen gers. Fasten the belt by pul ling out the strap care - fully an d inserting the tongue in th e lock.
17 Safety Lockable belt tongue In fit ting a child s eat that is i ntended to be secured in positi on by the lap portion of th e safety b elt, make use of the locking function of the buckle. Lockin g the lap port ion of the be lt lessens the risk that the seat w ill work loo se while the car i s in motion.
18 Safety Child safe ty The sam e attention mus t be given t o child safety i n the car as is given t o adults. Childre n travel mo st safely whe n properly restraine d, but restraints must be suitable for the s ize of the chil d.
19 Safety Saab 9-5 Wa go n: For chil d car seats tha t are approved fo r rear-facin g installation in the rear s eat and have top tether straps, we recommend that you posi tion the seat in the center s eat. This type of child seat must be sec ured with the thre e-po int se at be lt and the tw o unde rsi de anchorag e belts.
20 Safety Child res traints with a teth er strap must be anchored according to Canadian la w. If you h ave any que stions regard ing child tether anchorages ple ase contact y our Saab deal er. Design 1 (9 -5 Wagon only): 1 Place the chi ld restraint in the rear seat.
21 Safety Integr ated boos ter seat (Accesso ry) The integ rated booste r seat in the back is intended for children weighing 33-8 0 lbs. (15-36 kg) and betwe en 38 and 54 inche s (97 and 1 37 cm) tall. When se ated in the i ntegrated boos ter seat, the chi ld must wear the standard three-point safety bel t.
22 Safety WARNING • T he sta ndard sa fety belt mu st sti ll alway s be used in co njunction with the integr ated booster se at. • T he se at must not be modif ied in any way. • Never leave a child unattende d. • Check to en sure that the belt is not twisted o r rubbing aga inst any sharp edge s.
23 Safety Airbag (Supplemental Restraint Syst em "SRS") The suppl ementary restrai nt system (SRS) compr ises a n airbag in the steeri ng wh eel, a front passen ger airbag and side airbags in the front seats. The sys tem suppleme nts the protec tion provided by the safety be lts to further enhance the safety of occupants.
24 Safety IB417 Moment of im pact. Sensor de tects decel- eration and sends a signal via the control module to a gas gen- erator that inflates the airbag. The inflating airbag cushions the dr iver . Airbag now fully inflated. The steering column has collapsed and the airbag star ts to deflate.
25 Safety Front p assenger se at The airbags are interconnecte d and have a common w a rnin g light. Th e passenger airbag m odule is ho used in the fas cia above the g love compar tmen t and i s mar ked ”SRS AIRBAG”.
26 Safety AIR BAG warning light SRS s ervici ng The SRS must be inspecte d as part of the normal s ervice prog ram but otherwi se may be regarded as ma intenance-fre e.
27 Safety How do I p osit ion t he s eat to le ave r oom f or the airba g to inflate? Don’ t have your s eat too fa r forw ard. Recli ne the seat back to inc rease the dis- tance be tween you an d the airbag. For short driver s, spe cial acc essory pedal extensions are avai lable through y our Saab deale r.
28 Safety What sho uld I do if the AI R-BAG warning light comes on? If the war ning light is o n, it means tha t a faul t has bee n detected i n the system. The airbag cann ot be relied on to operate as intended and it migh t even be acti vated erroneous ly.

32 Security Doors Door handles Pull the handl e to open th e door. If the do or is stuck (e.g . if froze n), hold the handle f rom above to secure a be tter grip. Central lock ing Key / Remote c ontrol The key f its all the locks on the c ar. The key supp lied wi th th e car has a code number that n eeds to be quoted for ord ering additiona l keys.
33 Securit y If a new k ey/remote control i s to b e obtained , one of the o riginal ones is needed so that the control m odule ca n learn to rec - ognize the replacemen t key. For thi s rea- son, w e strongly a dvise you t o take two key s with you on long j ourneys and t o keep them separate .
34 Security The cent ral locking can also be o perated from insi de the car by means of th e swit ch on t he cent er co nsole . • T o loc k all doors : press the symbol s ide of the s witch once. • T o unlock the driv er´s door: press the s witch once.
35 Securit y Changing the remote -control battery When the battery in th e remote control is running low , the following mess age will appear on the SID: ”REPLACE KEY BAT- TERY ”.
36 Security Trunk lid lock, 9-5 Seda n The trunk lid lock is independ ent of the cen - tral-lock ing system. The trunk lid rel ease switch o n the driver’s door is inope rative when th e car is lock ed from outside by remote c ontrol or key. Press the switch on the d river’s door to unlock the trunk lid .
37 Securit y Locking The tail gate is l ocked in the following w ays: • By lo cki ng all the car d oors with t he but ton on the remote control. • With the but ton on the centre c on- sole.
38 Security Car alarm The ca r alar m (a nti- thef t syst em) is acti - vated/de activated wh en the car is locked /unlocked by the rem ote control or by the key , see page 3 3.
39 Securit y Activatin g the car al arm The ca r alar m (a nti- thef t syst em) is activat ed/deactivated when the car i s locked /unlocked by the rem ote control or by the key. The car a larm cannot be activated i f the driver’s door is open or if the igniti on switch is in po sit ion ON .
40 Security Alarm signals When the car alarm is armed, it wi ll be trig- gered if an y door, or the tr unk lid or hood, is opened o r if a wind ow is broken. The alar m will also be trig gered if an attemp t is mad e to bypass or short-circuit the igni- tion swit ch, or to disco nnect the battery .

46 Instru ments and contr ols Indicator and warning lights A number of indicator and warn ing lights wi ll come on whe n the igniti on is switched on prior to s tarting. Under norm al conditions , these sh ould go out a fe w seconds after the engine h as started (see page 52).
47 Instruments and controls Warning, charging This ligh t will come on togeth er with if the batte ry is not ch arging. If it com es on whil e you ar e dri vin g, sto p the c ar as soon as poss ible and sw itch off the engi ne. Check th e alternator drive belt (see pa ge 179).
48 Instru ments and contr ols Anti-lock b rake w arning This li ght together wi th and indi- cates th at a fault has o ccurred in the A BS system . Conventiona l braking without th e ABS functio n will still be available. For safe ty reasons, s top the ca r and check the leve l of the brak e fluid (see page 175).
49 Instruments and controls Engine malfunction This li ght indicate s a malf unction in th e fuel-inje ction or ign i tion system. The car may sti ll be driven wi th care and with some- what di minished p erformance (see page 132). Ind icator , fuel This ligh t comes on w hen there is less tha n about 2.
50 Instru ments and contr ols Indicator, SPORT-mode This ligh t will come on in ca rs with automa tic transmission when the S (SPORT) bu tton on the s elector leve r has been p ressed (positio n D, 3, 2 or 1) s ee page 144 .
51 Instruments and controls Traction-co ntrol-system: OFF The indi cator light goes on when the Trac- tion Control Sy stem is switched off with the TCS OFF bu tton. IMPORTANT: th e Traction Contr ol System is autom atically e ngaged ever y time the engine i s started (s ee page 1 47).
52 Instru ments and contr ols Autocheck ing of lights, main instrument panel The abov e warning and indicator ligh ts should come on w hen the i gnition is switched on prior to s tarting.
53 Instruments and controls Speedom eter (U.S . spe edomet er shown) The speed ometer receiv es signals from th e wheel sensors in the ABS system. If the NIGHT PANEL mode has been selecte d, the scale will be ill uminated up to 87 mph (14 0 km/h). The re mainder of the scale wi ll be illum inated if the speed of the car exceed s 84 mph (135 km/h).

55 Instruments and controls SCC Selecting th e function Use the button t o scroll through the following functions: Outdoor temperatu re (Frost warning) Regardle ss of which function has be en selected , except Ni ght Panel M ode, SID will automatic ally display the outdoor t empera- ture when it is between 26 ° and 38°F (-3° and +3°C).

57 Instruments and controls Using DIST as a trip meter If no va lue has been set for the DI ST func- tion, DIST will now function as a trip me ter (indicat ed by an arrow on the far righ t of the display ). Press CLEAR t o reset the trip meter. Under 1 000 miles the distance wil l be shown in incre ments of 0.

59 Instruments and controls 1 T his message cannot be removed b y press ing CLEAR . Depress the brak e pedal. 2 This message will be displa yed approxi- mately 600 miles (1,000 km) before t he next scheduled ser vice is due, or when 365 days hav e elapsed since the last ser vice.
60 Instru ments and contr ols Units and language versions The SID has four sets of un its: CHECK m essages can be display ed in six languag e options: En glish, Swedish, German, French, Italian and Spanish. 62 Instru ments and contr ols Rear fog light Press the button to switch on the rear fog light, w hich will only come on if the head - light s are on. The rear f og light will go off automa tically when th e engine is s witched off. Wh en the fog ligh t is next ne eded, it will have to be switc hed on m anually aga in.
63 Instruments and controls Front fog lights The front f og lights ca n be activ ated in both dimmed headlamp a nd parking ligh t posi- tions. F og lights s hould on ly be used in poor visibi lity cond itions. Make sure you are familiar with the a ppli- cable provi ncial/state law reg arding the use of fog lights.
64 Instru ments and contr ols Interior lighting The inter ior lighting consists of on e dome ligh t in t he fr ont an d one i n the back, a map-read ing light in the front, t wo reading light s in the bac k, floor courte sy lights in the front (in s ome model va riants) and door courtesy lights on all doors.
65 Instruments and controls Wipers and was hers The de lay of the inter mit tent oper ation can be adjus ted to betw een 2 and 15 seconds. Moving the control stalk to the spring-l oaded position bet ween 0 and 2 will produce a sin gle sweep of the wipers.
66 Instru ments and contr ols Rear-window wiper ( 9 -5 Wagon) The rear-w indow wiper an d washer are operat ed with the sa me stalk sw itch as used fo r washing an d wiping the windshield and head lights. This st alk has two a dditional s w itches , ON/OFF and .
67 Instruments and controls Automa tic climat e control (ACC) The ACC sy stem au tomat ical ly works to maintai n the desir ed temperatu re inside th e car.
68 Instru ments and contr ols The syst em has five sensors: • Outdoor te mperature sensor . • In ter io r te mperat ure sens or . • Sun se nsor (mounted on top of the fascia). • T wo ble nded-air temp erature sen sors (mounted inside the f ront floor v ents).
69 Instruments and controls Temperature control The cabin is divide d into two tem perature zones : • The driv er’ s zone . • The pass enger zone (f ront and rear seats) . The desire d temperature can be set between 58 and 82°F (15 a nd 27°C).
70 Instru ments and contr ols Functions Pressi ng AU TO will cancel all manual settin gs. If a man ual function is selected it will b e locked in but other functions will be c ontrolled autom atically. The sel ected tempera ture is alway s ma intained automa tically.
71 Instruments and controls The rear-wind ow and doo r-m irror hea ting is co ntroll ed ma nually . Switch off th e heating as soon as the re ar window is clea r, to avoid imposing a heavy load o n the bat- tery longe r than necessary .

73 Instruments and controls Starting in co ld weather To start wi th, the system will automatic a lly sel ect the defroste r set- ting, ma ximum hea t and low fa n speed. As the en gine warms up , air will also be distributed t hrough the floor vents a nd the fan sp eed will be i ncreased .
74 Instru ments and contr ols Programming II It is al so possible to customize th e ACC system, e.g. to adapt to driving and weather co nditions. To program a function or to cancel a programme d function, press and hol d in the rele vant button until the cor responding s ymbol has flashe d four times on the display and a chime has sounded .
75 Instruments and controls The di splay shows: ACC: AUTO RDEFR CTRL Once a fun ction has b een record ed under ”Programm ing II”, it will remain i n the system until you canc el the progra m. AUTO wil l still show on the display after a function has bee n saved in ”Program ming II”.

82 Saab 9- 5 Audio System Radio Press the RADIO/BAND button (3) to s witch to the rad io when anoth er source is ac tive. Preset station buttons (1) Press on ce (release wi thin a second) to select a preset stat ion, e.g. The sma ll figure on the far right of th e dis- play is the number of t he preset but ton selec ted.
83 Saab 9- 5 Audio System Press and hold in the AS/SEARCH button for more than a secon d to initiate a search for the s ix strongest s tations. Each tim e the system f inds and sto res a sta- tion, the number on th e far right of the dis- play w i ll chan ge.
84 Saab 9- 5 Audio System Cassette pl ayer Before pla ying a tape, make sure tha t the label is secure and th at the cass ette is no t warped, otherwise the cassette can become jammed in the deck. Th e cassette player s enses automa tically wheth er the tape is normal or metal (Type I or Type II).
85 Saab 9- 5 Audio System Music sea rch forw ard/re verse (5) To searc h forward for a trac k, press SEEK >> and rele ase quic k ly (withi n half a second ). The followin g will now appe ar on the disp lay: To perform a backward s earch, press << SEEK instead.

87 Saab 9- 5 Audio System CD player To sele ct the CD mo de, load a CD into the deck or , if one is a lready loade d, press the CD/RDM button. Inser t the CD, label-s ide up, and all ow the mechan ism to load it automatical ly.
88 Saab 9- 5 Audio System Fast tra ck search Press SEEK (mid-seg m ent) once to switch between th e CD-PLAY and CD-TR ACK modes. The CD-PLAY an d CD-TRACK modes change the function of << SEEK and SEEK >>. The selec ted mode will al s o be active the next ti me the sy stem is swit ched on.
89 Saab 9- 5 Audio System CD changer (access ory) Important ! Always keep the slid ing cover closed to keep du st out of the CD change r, so that i t will contin ue to provid e satisfactory service for a long time .
90 Saab 9- 5 Audio System If the maga zine in the CD cha nger is empty , the follo wing will a ppear on t he display : If the C D changer is activated right after a magazi ne has been loaded, the following will a ppear on the display: The CD number w ill change as eac h CD is played.

96 Saab 9- 5 Audio System Antennas The Audio System has th ree antennas incorpora ted in the rear window; tw o for FM diversi ty and one fo r AM. Fitting a car-phone anten na on the rear window can cause inte rference to radio receptio n.
97 Saab 9- 5 Audio System Sources of FM interfere nce Interfer ence to FM rec eption can be cause d by the e lectrical syst ems in other v ehicles, particul arly if the sign al from the trans m itter is wea k.
98 Saab 9- 5 Audio System Sources of AM interfere nce AM recep tion is prone to interference, e.g. from elec tric al syst ems o n othe r vehi cles, high- tension power lin es and ligh tning. Adjusting t he freque ncy steps No rth America/Eur ope If the ca r is taken from Europe to North America, the radio ’s frequency s teps can be adjuste d.
