Star ting and d rivin g Ignition switch The igni tion switch is located o n the center consol e betwee n the f ront se ats. In c ars with autom a tic tran smission, the remote control can only be rem oved when the selecto r lever is in p osition P.
Startin g and driving Steering whee l lock The stee ring wheel loc k is el ectronic. The lock en gages when th e remo te contro l is removed from the ign i tion and unlocks when the remo te control is in serted. A c lick c an be heard w hen the s teering wheel lock loc ks and u nlocks.
Star ting and d rivin g Do not run the starte r motor for more than 25 seconds at a time. Wa it 20–30 seconds before runni ng the sta rter again, to gi ve the batter y time to recover. Avoid rac ing the e ngine or putt ing a hea vy load on it before it h as warmed up.
Startin g and driving Useful tips on start ing the engine If the engine has failed to st art after several attempts in very cold weather, proceed a s follow s: 1 T ur n the ign ition s witch to ON (it is essenti al tha t you tur n the ignitio n to ON bef ore depres sing the accelerator).
Star ting and d rivin g Limp-home The e ngine ma nagement syst em has a diagnos tic fe ature that checks a num ber of internal functions. If a fault is detec ted in t he throttle v alve, the engine manag ement system wil l set the throttle s y stem to th e limp-ho me mode.
Startin g and driving • Have the c ar s er vi ced r egu lar ly in ac cor d- ance with th e service pr ogr am. • Alw ays be alert to any misfi ring of the engine (not running on al l cylin ders) a nd any loss of po wer or per f ormance. At the first sign of a malf unction, reduce speed and t ake the car to a Saab deale r .
Star ting and d rivin g Refueling Only use fu el fr om a wel l-kn ow n oil com- pany. All Saab g asoline eng ines can be driv en on gasolin e with an oct ane rating between AON 87–93 . The engi ne management system mo nitors the combu stion and auto m atical ly adapts to the fuel used.
Startin g and driving Refueling 1 Switch off the eng ine. 2 Open the filler c ap, loc ated in th e right - hand rear fender . 3 Insert the fuel pump noz zle be yond the flange on the fi ller pipe and let t he first mark (a ring, a pi mple or the first spr ing- coi l) re st on th e fl ange.
Star ting and d rivin g Recommended fuel: For optim um perform ance w e recomm end 90 AON for 175 hp engin es and 93 AON for 210 hp engines . Octane rating is determin ed according to the formu l a: where M ON is th e Motor Octa ne Num ber, and RO N is t he Rese arch Oc tane Numbe r.

Star ting and d rivin g Automatic tra nsmission The autom atic transmis sion has an elec- tronic c ontrol module. T he control mod ule rece ives inf orm ation incl udi ng a ccel era tor positio n and road sp eed.
Startin g and driving Park B rake Shif t Lock The trans missio n has a s ecurity function know n as Pa rk Br ake S hift Lock . To mo ve the gear selector lev er out of the P or N po si- tion, the gear selector lev er detent (c atch) must be pre ssed in at the same time as the brake pe dal is held de pressed.
Star ting and d rivin g Lock-up The trans mission’s torque converte r has a lock-up function. This can loc k the torq ue converte r in 3r d, 4th and 5th ge ars, thus reducing the engine sp eed and fuel con- sumpt ion. Kick-down When the acc elerat or is pressed down fully , a down change is made t o optimi ze acceler- ation, e.
Startin g and driving Limp-home If the transmi ssion malfun ctions, the co ntrol module will activate l imp-home mode . In this mo de, only 2nd and 5th ge ars are avail- able. Sel ect 2nd gear w hen drivi ng at low speeds and 5th gear at higher speed s.

Star ting and d rivin g Cruise control (Cruise co ntrol sys tem) For safe ty reaso ns (brake system func- tion), the br akes mu st be applied once when the engine has start ed, before the cruise control sy stem can b e activated.
Startin g and driving To reduce the preset speed You can reduce speed in any of the follow- ing wa ys: • Brak e to the de sired speed. J og the control to SET/+ o r SET/–. • Jog the contro l to SET/– to reduce t he speed b y 1 m ph (1.6 km/h).
Star ting and d rivin g ABS b rakes The Antiloc k Brakin g System (ABS) m odu- lates the brak e pressure to each w heel. The pressure i s automa tically reduc ed just before t he whee l locks up and th en increases again to the p oint at which the wheel i s just ab out to lock.
Startin g and driving The ABS system wil l not reduce th e braking distanc e on loos e gravel, snow or ice but, becaus e the wheels c annot lock up , stee r- ing con trol is retained. When the ABS system operates you will feel the br ake peda l pulsate and h ear a ticking noise, both of which are perfect ly normal.
Star ting and d rivin g Tracti on Control System (TCS ) Anti-spin system How the system w orks The Tr action Con trol System (TCS) is designe d to prevent wheels pin. Th is enables the car to achi eve the best possi ble grip and, hence, maximum tractive effort, together with grea ter stability.
