6 Chapter 1 Connections and Setup Cables Needed to Connect Components to Y our DVD/VCR The pictures below show the cables needed for the connections r epr esented in this book.
Chapter 1 7 Connections and Setup DVD/VCR + TV 1. Connect a coaxial cable to the Cable/Antenna jack on your TV (sometimes labeled ANT IN) and to the TV jack on your DVD/VCR player . 2. Connect the coaxial cable from your cable outlet, cable box, or antenna to the ANT IN jack on your DVD/VCR.
8 Chapter 1 Connections and Setup DVD/VCR + TV + Audio Receiver Both Dolby Digital® and DTS® ar e audio formats used to r ecord 5.1-channel audio signals onto the digital track of film (while the film is being made). Both of these formats pr ovide up to six separ ate channels: left, right, center , left rear , right r ear , and common subwoofer .
Chapter 1 9 Connections and Setup Install Batteries in the Remote 1. Remove the battery compartment cover on the back of the remote. 2. Insert new batteries. Match the polarities (+ and –) on the batteries with the diagram on the r emote. 3. Put the battery compartment cover back on the remote.

Chapter 2 15 Using the Remote Contr ol LOCK Locks the buttons on the front of the unit. MENU Displays the on-screen menu system. (T o see the VCR Main menu, pr ess VCR and then MENU. To see the DVD Main menu, press DVD and then MENU). OK Selects the setting or menu that is highlighted.

18 Chapter 3 Playing Discs T o Load and Play a DVD Disc T urn on the TV and your DVD/VCR (pr ess ON•OFF on the r emote or pr ess the P ower button on the DVD/VCR). 1. If necessary , tune the TV to its Video Input Channel (if you need more information, go to page 62).
Chapter 3 19 Playing Discs Slow Motion (in Freeze Frame Mode) While a disc is playing, press P AUSE. Press REVERSE or FORW ARD (each time you pr ess REVERSE or FORWARD the slow motion will get even slower until you r each the slowest speed). To r esume normal playback, press PLA Y .
20 Chapter 3 Playing Discs Using the On-Screen Info Display The Info Display appears acr oss the top of the scr een when you press the INFO button on the remote while you’re playing a disc. Use the left and right arr ow buttons to highlight differ ent icons.
Chapter 3 21 Playing Discs Hour Minutes Seconds How to Navigate the Info Display To access the Info Display, pr ess the INFO button on the r emote while you’r e playing a disc. Use the left and right arrow buttons on the r emote to highlight different icons.
22 Chapter 3 Playing Discs Subtitles Icon (DVD Info Display) By default, subtitles are off. T o turn subtitles on: Highlight the Subtitle icon, and pr ess the up or down arrow buttons to scr oll thr ough the available subtitle languages (the subtitle language options appear in the box at the bottom of the Info Display), then pr ess OK.
Chapter 3 23 Playing Discs Play Mode Icon (DVD, CD Info Displays) The Play Mode options available depend upon the type of disc you’re playing. The default play mode (standar d play) plays the disc’s contents in the or der in which the disc was created (i.
24 Chapter 3 Playing Discs AB Repeat AB Repeat lets you define a specific segment on the disc that you want to r epeat. For example, you might want to watch the dogfight in the movie T op Gun. To watch this scene over and over: 1. With the Play Mode icon highlighted, press the up or down arr ow button until Repeat Mode: AB appears.
Chapter 3 25 Playing Discs Bookmark Icon (DVD Info Display) The Bookmark feature lets you mark a point on the disc so that when you turn the player off and back on (without having ejected the disc), you can quickly start playing the disc from a bookmarked point.
26 Chapter 3 Playing Discs Clearing a Bookmark The bookmarks are er ased each time you remove a disc fr om the player and/or when the power is turned off. 1. While you’re playing a disc, pr ess the INFO button on the r emote (the Info Display appear s).
Chapter 3 27 Playing Discs Playing mp3 and WMA music files and displaying JPEG files mp3 is an audio file format which compresses r ecor ded music. It was developed by Fraunhofer Gesellschaft in collaboration with Thomson Inc.

30 Chapter 4 VCR Featur es Recording Features Y our DVD/VCR provides many ways to r ecor d progr amming. Basic recor ding is explained in detail on page 29. The following r ecording techniques ar e also available. • Recording – lets you press one button to r ecord a pr ogr am.
Chapter 4 31 VCR Featur es Timer Recording Y ou can set up to 8 differ ent TV progr ams to be r ecorded. Before a Timer Recor ding will work, the VCR needs to be set up correctly . • DVD/VCR’s clock must be set corr ectly . • The timer indicator appears in the display when you turn off the DVD/VCR and a timer r ecording has been set.
32 Chapter 4 VCR Featur es Reviewing and Clearing Programs To review progr ams that you have already set up: 1. Press the MENU button to display the VCR Main Menu. 2. Press the down arr ow button until PROGRAM is highlighted, and press OK (the Pr ogram menu appear s).
Chapter 4 33 VCR Featur es Info Display To find out the status of the DVD/VCR, press the INFO button on the remote contr ol. Each time you press INFO , different information appear s on the scr een. See the following examples. Note: The date and time must be set before they can be displayed.
34 Chapter 4 VCR Featur es Index Search The VCR has a VHS Index Sear ch System that automatically recor ds index marks on the tape every time you start a r ecording. During playback you can locate the progr am you want to play by the number of index marks or by scanning.
Chapter 4 35 VCR Featur es Explanation of the VCR Menu System The on-screen menus you set up the fir st time you turned on your DVD/VCR were explained in Chaper 1. This chaper lists other menus that you can access through the VCR Main Menu (press VCR and then MENU on the r emote control).

42 Chapter 5 DVD Menu System To Set Ratings for Unrated Titles: Some discs contain titles that don’t have a rating assigned to them. Sometimes, movies you might find the most explicit are unr ated. Y ou can r estrict access by requiring a password for unr ated titles.
Chapter 5 43 DVD Menu System Display Menu The Display menu contains the settings that affect how a disc’s content looks on your TV and the brightness of the display that’s on the fr ont of the DVD/VCR. TV Image The TV Image menu adjusts the way a movie appears on your TV.
44 Chapter 5 DVD Menu System 16 x 9 Widescreen – Choose this setting if your DVD Player is connected to a widescreen TV. If you choose this setting and you don’t have a widescreen TV, the images on the screen might appear distorted due to vertical compr ession.
Chapter 5 45 DVD Menu System Digital Output If you connected your DVD/VCR to a r eceiver via the Digital Audio Out jacks (COAXIAL or OPTICAL) on the back of the player , choose both Dolby Digital and D TS settings . 1. 46 Chapter 5 DVD Menu System Notes: Discs are cr eated differently . The DVD player can’t override some language prefer ences. If a disc’s softwar e was created to play the movie (title) in a pr eferred language, the pr efer ence you set might be ignored.

48 Chapter 6 Additional Information Remote control won’t work •Y ou might be in the wrong mode. T o operate the DVD functions of your DVD/VCR, pr ess DVD on the r emote befor e you pr ess any other buttons. To oper ate the VCR, pr ess the VCR button first.
Chapter 6 49 Additional Information The picture is distorted • The disc might be damaged. Try another disc. Picture is distorted during forward and reverse scan • It is normal for some distortion to appear while scanning.
50 Chapter 6 Additional Information General VCR Problems No power • Make sure the DVD/VCR is plugged into a working outlet. • Make sure connections between devices ar e corr ect and snug.
Chapter 6 51 Additional Information The DVD/VCR makes noise when it is stopped • This is normal. The DVD/VCR removes the tape fr om the playheads when stopping. The cylinder s inside the unit will continue to rotate for a few minutes after stopping.
52 Chapter 6 Additional Information • If you are using A/V cables, make sur e the TV is set to the Video Input Channel.
