2 FEATURES Your RadioShack TAD-729 9 00 MHz Dual Keypad Cor dless Speakerphone Digital Answering System combines a 900 MHz digital cordless te lephone unit and a digital TAD ( Telephone Answering Device). The 900 MHz band means less int erfer- ence, clearer sound, and gr eater rang e than 46/49 MHz co rdless telephones.
3 T ELEPHONE FEATURES 30-Number Memory Dialing — lets you store 30 numbers in memory (2 0 in the handset, 10 in the ba se) for easy dialing. Dual Keypad — a full set of keys on both the handset and base let you use either keypad to mak e and answer calls or program the pho ne’s features.
4 Wall Mountable — you can mount the TAD-729 on the wall to sa ve space on your desk top. T AD FEATURES Day/Time Stamp — records the day and time each message was r ecorded. Remote Operation — lets you operate your TAD from a touch-t one phone (or from a rota ry phone with a po cket tone dialer).

8 PREPARATION MOUNTING THE PHONE You can place the TAD-729’s ba se on a desk or table , mount it on a st andard wall plate, or mount it directly on a wall.
9 On a W all Plate or W all 1. Insert the t wo tabs at the top of th e narrow end of t he supplied bra cket into the base’s upper tab slots as shown, then press down on the bracket’ s latches and in sert them into the lower slots.
10 Note: To mount the TAD dir ectly on a wall, you need two screws (not supplied) with heads that fit into the key hole slots on the bottom of th e base. Follow the steps under “ On a Wall Plat e or Wall” on Page 9, then apply these addit ional in- structions for placem ent on a wall.
11 Recharge th e battery pac k when Low Battery flashes on the display. Important: Be sure the batt ery pack is properly connected befo re you try to charge it. The CHARGE/IN USE indica- tor lights when the ha ndset is on the base, even if the battery pa ck is not con- nected.
12 1. Set DIAL MODE to T (tone). 2. Lift the h andset and li sten for a d ial tone. 3. Press any nu m be r ot her than 0 . Note: If your ph one system re quires that you dial an access code (9, for example) before you dial an outsid e number , do not press the acc ess code numb er either .
13 SETTING THE NUMBER OF RINGS Set RING TIME on the side of the bas e to 3 , 5 , or T/S to select how long the TAD waits to answer a call (3 r ings, 5 ring s, or toll-saver). Note: If you plan to check messages by long distance, set RING TIME to toll-sav- er (see “Using th e Toll-Saver” on Page 32).
14 SETTING AUTO T ALK Your phone is pr eset so you must pre ss TA L K to answer a call. With auto talk turned on, you can an swer a call by just lifting the ha ndset fr om the base, or , if the handset is away from th e base, by pressing any key . Follow these step s to turn auto ta lk on or off.
15 2. Press 3 (or tw ice) to select Area Code . 3. Press SELECT , then enter yo ur 3- digit area code. If you make a mis- take, repeated ly press or to move the cursor over the incorrect digit, then ent er the correct numb er . Note: If an area code is alre ady stored, it appear s on the display .
16 T ELEPHONE OPERATION Note: To use the speake rphone, you must use the base keypad; to use the handset, you must use the handse t key- pad. MAKING AND RECEIVING A CALL Using the Handset To make a call, lift the han dset and press TA L K . TALK appears on the handset's d isplay and the CHARGE/IN USE indicator on the base light.
17 ADJUSTING THE HANDSET V OLUME To adjust the volume you hear thr ough the handset durin g a call, press to in- crease or to decrease the volume. The display shows Volume Maximum , Volume High , Volume Medium , or Volume Low . Note: When you press while the vol- ume is maximum or while the volume is low, the setting does not chan ge.
18 During the call, one person can hang up and let the call continue at the other key- pad. Or, bot h people can hang u p to end the call. Note: If you hear a h igh-pitched noise from the ba se’s speaker, the handset and the base are to o close to gether.
19 3. When the service answ ers, press TON E ( ) on the hands et. Any addi- tional numbers you dial are sent as tone sign als. 4. When you hang up, the phone au to- matically resets to pulse dia ling. USING PAGE/INTERCOM You can use the TAD- 729 as a two-way pager and in tercom between t he base and the handset.
20 To transfer a call from the handse t to th e base, press INT CM . The call is placed on hold. When the person a t the base an- swers, press TA L K . The call is released from hold and transf erred to the base. To bring the hand set back into the con - versation for a 3-way conference, p ress TA L K again.
21 MEMORY DIALING You can store u p to 20 numbers in th e handset’ s m emory an d a not he r 1 0 in th e base’s memory, then dial a stored num- ber by press ing a me m o ry loc ation num- ber. You can also store a name with each number in the hand set’s memory.
22 If you make a mistake, move the cursor over the error , then en ter the correct character , or press DEL/CH to delete a character . T o delete all the characters, h old down DEL/CH for at least 1 second.
23 EDITING OR DELETING A NUMBER IN THE HANDSET’ S MEMORY Follow these steps t o edit or delete a memory numb er. 1. Lift the ha ndset. 2. Hold down MEM until Memory Store and a list of m emory loca- tion numbers ap pear on the displa y . 3. Choose a memory location ( 01–20) by pressing a number or by repeat- edly pressing or .
24 DIALING A MEMORY NUMBER To dial a number stored in hand set’s memory, lift the han dset and press MEM . The list of memory locati on numbers ap- pears. Choo se a memory loca tion (01– 20) by pressing a number or by repeat- edly pressing or , then pre ss TA L K .
25 CALLER ID OPERATION (HANDSET ONLY) If you subscribe to Caller ID service from your phone company, the phone comp a- ny sends information about the call, as well as the time and date, betw een the first and second rings of every call yo u receive.
26 DIALING NUMBERS FROM A CALLER ID RECORD To dial a local num ber stored in a Caller ID record, re call the record , then pres s TA L K . If it is a lo ng distance call, press 1 before you press TA L K .
27 To delete all the r ecords at once, press CALL ID so the record to tals appear, then press DEL/CH . Delete All? ap- pears, prompt ing you to confirm the de- letion.
28 T AD OPERATION SELECTING THE OUTGOING MESSAGE The TAD has two prerecor ded outgoing messages. One a sks the caller to leave a message: “Hello, no one is availa ble to take your call. Please leave a me ssage after the to ne.” The TAD u ses this mes- sage when REC TIME is set to 1 or 4 (see “Setting the Recor d Time”).
29 SETTING THE T AD TO ANSWER CALLS To set the TAD to answer calls , press ANSWER . If the TAD is set to re cord a caller’s message (see “Setting the Record Time” on Page 28), it plays the outgoing m essage an d shows the num- ber of record ed messages.
30 To record a m emo, hold d own MEMO on the base un til the TAD beeps and –– appears in t he message co unter win- dow, then speak your message. When you finish the me mo, press PLA Y/STOP or MEMO . Note: The TAD-729 ca nnot record a memo less th an two seco nds long.
31 ADJUSTING THE T AD’ S VO L U M E To adjust the speaker ’s volume, repeat- edly press VOL . or . on the base. The volume setting from 1 (lowest ) to 10 (highest) appears in th e message counter window. DELETING MESSAGES To delete the current message while it is playing, hold down DELETE until the TAD beeps.
32 REMOTE OPERATION While you are away fr om your home or office, you can use a touch-tone phone, or a pulse (rotary) phone with a pocket tone dialer (available through your local RadioShack store) to enter you r PIN and do any of the following: • Set the T AD to answer or not answer calls.
33 • The maximum lengt h of a memo recorded by remote o peration is 4 minutes. To use a remote command, pr ess # and (within 2 seconds) the numb er for the command you want. Note: The remo te operation stops when someone picks up the handse t or any phone on the same phone line.
34 T ROUBLESHOOTING We do not expect you to have any prob lems with your TAD-729, but if you do, th ese suggestions might help . Pr oblem Sug gestion Low v ol ume or unusual sounds. Someone has pick ed up another phone on the same line. Hang up the other phone.
35 If you still have problems, disconnect the TAD-729. If other phones on the same line work properly, t he fault is in t his phone or its installation. If you cannot fin d the prob- lem, take your phone to your local Radi oSha ck store for assistance.

37 REPLACING THE BATTERY PACK If you follow the instructions in “Connect- ing and Charging the Bat tery Pack” on Page 10, the b attery pack should last about one yea r. If the battery pa ck does not hold a char ge for more than 2 hours after an overnight ch arge, replace it with a new 3.
38 THE FCC W ANTS Y OU TO KNOW In the unlikely event that your phon e causes problems on th e phone line, the phone company can tempor arily discon- tinue your se rvice.
