4 READ THIS BEFORE IN ST ALLA TION Each device that you connect to the phone line draws power from the phone line. We refer to this power d raw as the device’s ringer equivalence num ber , or REN. The REN for your ET-687 is on the bottom of the base.

6 IN STALLATI ON MOUNTING THE PHONE You can place t he ET-687’s bas e on a desk or table, or mount it on a standard wall plate or direct ly on a wall.
7 On a D esk T op 1. Insert the bracket’s tabs into the base ’ s u pper tab slots as shown, then p ress down on the bracket’s clips and insert t hem into t he clip slots. 2. To c onnect the phon e to a two-line phone jack , plug one end of t he sup- plied two-lin e phone cord int o the TEL LINE 1/ 2 jack on the back of the phone.
8 6. Connect the phone cord(s) to the modular phone li ne jack ( s). 7. Lift the base’s antenna to a vertical position. On a W all Plat e 1. I nse rt the br acket’ s tabs into the base’s lower tab slots as shown, then press down on the brack et’ s clips and insert t hem into the clip slots .
9 4. Route the adapter cord through the nar ro w gr oo ve o n t h e br ac ket . If yo u are using two phone cords, r o ute the secon d cord t hrough one of the wide grooves on the bracket.

To connect the phone to a t wo-line phone j ack , plug on e end of the sup- plied two-line ph one cord into the TEL LINE 1/ 2 jack on the back of the phone.
11 6. Align the bracket ’ s keyhole slots with the moun ting screws a nd slide the base downward to secure it. 7. Connec t the pho ne cord(s) to the modul ar phone line jack(s). 8. Plug the adapter into a standard AC outle t. 9. Press and lift out the h andset holder , flip it over as shown, then snap it back into place.
12 4. Replace the cover . To charge the batt ery pack, place the handset on the ba se either faceup or facedown. The CHARG E indicator on the ba se lights. Recharge the battery pack whe n the handset b eeps e very 3 sec onds or its line in dicators flash e very 3 seco nds.
13 SETTI NG THE DIALING MOD E Set DI AL MODE on the back of the base for the type of service you have (tone or pulse). If you are not sure which type you have, once t he battery pac k is fully charge d, do this test. 1. Set DIAL MODE to T (t one). 2. Press LINE 1 on the bas e.
14 OPE RATION USING THE H ANDSET Makin g a Ca ll To make a call, l if t the ha ndset, press LINE 1 (or LINE 2 ), t hen dial the number. When y ou pres s a line button on the handset, that line’s i ndicator on the handset li ghts. Th e same line’s indicator on the b ase flashes t o show that some- one is using that line at the handset.
15 USING T HE SPEAKERPHONE Maki ng a C all To m ake a call, press LINE 1 (or LINE 2 ), listen for a dial tone, then dial the num - ber. When you press a line button on the b a s e, t ha t li ne ’ s indi cator on the base li gh ts .
16 PUTTING A CAL L ON HOLD Pr ess HOLD on the handset or base to put a call on hol d. T he indicator f or that line flashes on the handset and lights red at the bas e. While a call is on hold, you can place the ha ndset on the base or use the other line without disconnec ting the curr ent cal l.
17 USIN G BOTH T HE HANDSET AND SPEAKERPHONE To use t he handset to join a call at the base , or to use t he bas e to join a conver- sation at t he handset , press the line but - ton for t he l ine that i s in u se . You hear a warning tone (three l ong beeps).
18 3. T o answer the pa ge press INT CM on the hand set or INTERCOM on the base, t hen press CONF . To end the conference call, press LI NE 1 and LINE 2 on one ke ypad, then press LINE 2 on the other keypad. To hang up one line and continue talking on the other, press the line button that you want to hang up.
19 3. W hen the service answers, press TO N E ( ). Any ad ditional numbers you dial a re sent a s tone signals. 4. W hen you hang up, t he phone auto- m at ic al ly r es ets to pu l se di a lin g . 20 • I f a call comes in during an intercom conversation, either of the i ntercom parties can answer the call as they normally would. Simply press the ringing line’s button.
21 4. Press MEM , then enter the memory location num ber ( 0 – 9 ). A long beep confirm s that t he num ber is stored. Note : If the phone so unds five qu ick beeps , you have made an entry error , and the number w as not stored. Start again from Step 2.
22 USING A HEADSET You can talk with hands-free conve- nience us ing an optiona l heads et that has a 3 / 32 -inch (2.5-mm ) plug. Contact your local Radio Shack store for a sui t- able headset. To connect the heads et, open the rub- ber cover marked on the side of the handset, then insert the head set’s plug into the ja c k .
23 T ROUBLESHOOTI NG W e do not expect you to hav e any p roblems with you r phone, but if you do, the follow- ing sug gestions might help. Problem Suggest ion The phone does not work or works poorly . Be sure the base’s modul ar cord(s) an d AC adapt er are correctly and securely connected.
24 If you still have proble ms, disconn ect the phone. If ot her phones on th e same li ne work properly, the fault is in this phone or its installation. If you cannot find the problem, take your phone to your local Radi o Shack store for assistance. The handset battery pack does not charge.

26 REPLACING THE BATTERY PACK If you f ollow the instructions in “ Connec t- ing and Charging the Battery Pack ” on Page 11, the battery pa ck should last about one year. I f the bat tery pack does not hold a ch arge for more than 2 hours after an overnight c harge, replace it with a new 3.
