3 Important Note: Cordless phones such as this one require AC power to operate. When the A C power is off, you cannot dial out or rece ive incom- ing calls using your ET -550.
4 READ THIS BEFORE IN ST ALLA TION Each device that you co nnect to t he phone line draws pow er from the phone line. We refer to this powe r draw as the device’s Ringer Equivalen ce Number , or RE N . The REN is shown on the bottom of the base. If you are using more than one phone or other device o n the line, ad d up all the RENs.

6 IN ST AL LA TIO N SELECTING A LOCA TION You can pla ce the p hone on a desk top or table, or mount it on a wall. Select a location that is: • near an A C outlet • near a telephone lin e jack •.
7 3. Route the a dapter ’s cord t hrough the strain relief slot on top of the base. 4. Plug the a dapter into a s tanda rd AC outlet. The P OWE R indicator on the base lights. 5. Plug the mo dular cord’s other end into a modul ar ph one line jack.

Drill tw o hole s 3 15 / 16 inc hes apart. Then threa d a screw int o each hole, l etti ng the he ads extend about 5 / 16 inc h from the wall .
10 6. Plug the mo dular cord’s other end into a modul ar ph one line jack. 7. Align the keyhole slo ts with t he mounting sc rews and slide the base downward to secure it. 8. Press and lift out the hands et holder , rotate it 180°, then snap it back into place so it holds the handset.
11 3. Replace the c over and tighten t he scre w . 4. T o charge the bat tery , simply place th e ha ndset on t he b ase. The CHARGE indicator on the base ligh ts.
12 SETTI NG THE DIALING MO DE Set P • • T on the back of the base for the type of service you h ave. If you are not sure wh ich type y ou have, do thi s t e st. 1. Set P • • T to T (t one ). 2. Press SPEAKER and listen f or a dial tone from the speakerphone.
13 OPE R A TION Note : You can use the keypad on ei- ther th e handset or the base to operate the ET-550. To use the speakerphone, you must use the bas e keypad; to use the hand set, you must us e the hands et keypad. MAKING AN D RECEIVING CALLS Using the Handset To make o r answer a cal l using the handset, simply lift the han dset.
14 Switc hing Between the Han dset an d Sp eakerph one To switch to the s peakerphone while you are using the han dset, press SPEAKER on t he base. Wh en you hear the conversation or the dial tone on the spea kerphone, press TA L K on the han dset or pl ace t he handset on the ba se .
15 T o place a call on hold when us i ng the handset, switch t o the speak erphone by pressing SPEAKER on the base, then place the handset on the base (or press TA L K on the han dset). Then press HOLD on the base. The phone disconne cts t he cal l 5 mi n- utes af ter you put it on hold.
16 When t he ha ndset or ba se answers , press SPEAKER or TA L K onc e to end the intercom call, then press the s ame button again or press HOLD on the base to start the conference call.
17 USING T ONE SERVICES ON A PULSE LINE Some s pecial services, s u ch as b ank- by-phone, require tone s ignals. If you have pulse service, you can still u se the se s pec ial ton e ser vic es b y f ollo w - ing th ese steps . 1. Be sure P • • T is s e t to P .

19 Dial ing a Me mory N umber To dial a number s tored in ha ndset’s memory, lift the handset from the base or press TA L K . To dial a n umber stored in the base’s mem ory, press SPEAK- ER .
