4 Important: Cordless ph ones such as this one requ ire AC power to op erate. When the AC power is off, you cannot dial ou t or recei ve inc oming calls using your ET-521. For this reason, the ET-521 cordless phone shoul d not be your only telephon e.

7 PREP ARATION SELECTI N G A LO C AT ION You can place the phone on a d esk t op or table, mount it on a standard wall plate, or mount it direct ly on t he wal l.
8 2. Plug one e nd of the supplied l ong modular cord into the phone jack on the back of the base. 3. Insert the sup plied AC adapter ’s barrel plug into the DC 12V jack on the back of the base. 4. Route the ad apter ’s cord through the st rain relief slot o n the bottom of the b a se .

Remov e t he bracket by ho lding in both tabs and gently pulling o ut t he wide end of the bracket. 2. Plug one en d o f the s upplied short modul ar cord into the pho ne jack on the back of the base.

Insert the tabs on the na r ro w end of the bracket in to the s lots on the bo t- tom of th e base as sho wn an d route the other e nd of t he sh ort modular cord throug h the center o f the bra ck- et. 6. Push the tabs on the wide end of the bracket into the l owe r slots on the bottom of the base.
11 MOUNTING THE BASE DIRECTLY ON THE W ALL For this mounting me thod , you need two flat-head screws (not supp lied) with heads that fi t int o the keyhole slots on the bottom of the base. 1. Drill two holes 3 15 / 16 inches (100 m m) apa rt. Then t hread a screw into each hole, letting the hea ds extend about 5 / 16 i nch (7 mm) from the wall.

Insert the tabs on the na r ro w end of the bracket in to the s lots on the bo t- tom of t h e base as shown, guide the modular an d adapter cords th rough the slots on the wi de end of the bracket, then push t he tabs on t he wide end of the bracket into the low- er slots on the botto m of t he bas e.
13 CONNECT ING AND CHARGING THE BAT TERY PACK The E T-521 com es w it h a rechar geable nickel-cadmi um battery pack in the hands et but not connected. Before using your ph one, you mu st connect the bat - tery pack and then charge it for about 15 hours.
14 Also, check the charging contac ts on the han dset and t he base. If the contacts are dirty or tarnished, clean them with a pe ncil eraser . • I f the battery p ack get s comple tely discharged or the base loses power while the handset is away from it, the security access-protection code needs to be reset.
15 SETTI N G THE DIALI NG MOD E Set T/P (Tone/Pulse) on t he bac k of the base for the type of service y ou have. If you are not sure which type you have, once the ba ttery is fully charged, do thi s test . 1. Set T/P to T . 2. Lift the hands et, then press TA LK and l isten f or the dial tone.
16 SETTI NG THE AREA CODE When y ou return a call from a Cal l er ID record (see “Di aling Numbers from a Caller ID Rec ord” o n Page 28), your phone automat ically dials 1, the area code, and t he num ber.
17 3. Pre ss / o r #/ to se l ec t t h e de - sired ringer type o r turn off the ring- er . The handset sounds the new selection as you change the ring er type. 4. Press SETUP to comple te the se t- ting. If you turned off th e ringer , Ring er OFF appears for about 12 seconds .
18 T ELEPHONE O PERATION MAKING AN D RECEIVING A CALL To make a call, simply lift the handset and press TALK . When t he TA LK indica- tor lights ste adily and you hear the di al tone, dial t he desired phone num ber or memory n umber (see “ Mem ory Dialing” on Page 21).
19 CHA NGING THE CHANNEL The E T-521 scans 25 chann els (frequen- cy p airs used be tween t he bas e and the hands et) and autom atically selects a clear channel each time you make or re- ceiv e a c all. CH and the current chan nel number a p- pear on t he display for about 15 secon ds when you make or receive a call.
20 Note: If you do not have any s pecial phone s ervices, p ressing FL A SH might disconnect the current call. USING HOLD To talk to someone else i n the room wi th- out the pe rson on the ot her end of the phone line hearin g your conversation, press HOLD during the call.
21 To stop the handset from beeping b efore it autom atically stops, press TA L K on the hands et twice or PA G E on the base. To answer a page from the base or to page the ba se, press INT CM on t he hands et. The base sou nds three beeps and Inte rcom appears on the hand- set.
22 1. Press MEM . PR OG (programm ing) appears. 2. Enter the number you want to store. The number appea rs on the display . T o store the la s t num ber you dialed, simpl y pr ess REDIAL . If you ent er an i ncorrect digi t, press DELETE to delete the last entered digit.
23 E nte ring a Pa use In som e telephone sy stems, y ou must dial an access code (9, for example ) and wait for a second dial tone before you can dial an out side number. You can store the access code wit h the phone numbe r. However, you should also sto r e a pause after the access code to allow the o utside line time to connect .
24 Ch ain- Dialin g Se rvi ce Num bers For quick recal l of numbers for sp e cial services (such as alternate long distance or bank by phone ) , s tore each group of numbers i n its own mem ory location. When cal ling spe cia l serv ices , d ial the serv ice’s m ain nu mber fir st.
25 Using th e VIP Call L ist Your phone l e ts you save up to 20 phone numbe rs in its VIP Call List. When ever someone calls f rom one of t h ose 20 numbe rs, if you subs cribe to Caller ID, the s ystem sound s dist inctive ri ngs aft er the first ring to alert you.

29 USIN G A HEADSET You can ma ke or answer c a lls with hands -free c onv enience using an op ti o n- al headset that has a 3 / 32 -inc h ( 2 .5 mm) plug. We recom mend Rad ioShack Cat . No. 4 3-194, which is specially designed fo r us e wi th t h e E T- 5 21.
30 T ROUBLES HOOTING We do n ot expect y ou to h ave any problems wi th your t elephone, but if yo u do, the following sugg estions m ight help. Probl em Suggest ion The handset does not work. Move the handset closer to the base. Be sure t he phone line cord a nd AC adapt - er are correctly and securely conne cted.
31 If y ou still have p roblem s, disc onnect the ph one. I f other phones on t he sa me line work properly, the fault i s in this pho ne or its installation. If you canno t fin d the problem, tak e your ET-521 to your local RadioShack store for a ssistance.

33 REPLACING THE BATTE RY PACK If you follow the instructions in “ Connect- ing and Chargin g the Battery Pack” on Page 13, the ba ttery pack should last about one year. If the battery does not hold a charge f or more than 2 hours after an ov ernight charge, replace the ba ttery with a new 3.
