7 The Basics Intr oduction Thank you for purchasing your RadioShack 5.8 GHz Multi- Handset Expandable Cordless T elephone. Unlike other conventional cordless telephones, your telephone supports up to ten handsets on a single telephone line. Y ou can add a handset to any room in your home or ofce that has an AC outlet.

9 The Basics In the unlikely event that your phone causes problems on the phone line, the phone company can temporarily discontinue your service. If this happens, the phone company attempts to notify you in advance.
The Basics 10 Surge Protection Y our telephone has built-in protection circuits to reduce the risk of damage from surges in telephone line and power line current. These protection circuits meet or exceed the FCC requirements. However , lightning striking the telephone or power lines can damage your telephone.
11 The Basics Important Caller ID Information T o use Caller ID and Call W aiting , you must be in an area where those services are available and you must subscribe to those services through your local phone company .

The Basics 14 Installation Before using your phone, carefully peel the protective lm off the display . The lm protects the handset window during shipment and is not necessary for use. Selecting a Location Y ou can place the phone’s base on a desk or table, or mount it on a standard wall plate or directly on a wall.
15 The Basics The handset antenna is located on the back, above the ringer speaker . For maximum communication range, do not hold the handset in such a way as to cover the antenna by your hand. Also, place the handset in the upright position while not in use so the antenna can pick up the signals from the base.
The Basics 16 Insert the supplied AC adapter ’s barrel plug into the DC IN 9V jack on the bottom of the base. Route the adapter ’s cord through the strain relief slot on the base of the phone.
17 The Basics Insert the two tabs at the bottom of the narrow end of the supplied bracket into the base’s lower tab slots. Then press down on the bracket’s latches and insert them into the upper slots. Plug the adapter into a standard AC outlet. Plug the modular cord’s other end into a modular phone line jack.
The Basics 18 Connecting/Charging the Battery P ack The phone comes with a rechargeable nickel-metal hydride (Ni- MH) battery pack in the handset. Before using your phone, you must connect the battery pack. Then charge it for about 15 - 20 hours. Press down and slide off the battery compartment cover .
19 The Basics If the display is blank and the phone does not work, recharge the battery pack. (The battery power might be too low to light the display .) About once a month, fully discharge the battery by keeping the handset off the base until L OW BA TTERY ashes on the display .
The Basics 20 Install the Optional P ower Backup Battery in the Base The battery backup allows you to make and receive calls during a power failure. Y ou can use any handset or the base, just as you would normally . P ush the battery tray on the right side of the base until it clicks.
21 The Basics Installing a Belt Clip T o Attach the Belt Clip Insert the belt clip into the holes on each side of the handset. Press down until it clicks.

25 The Basics Soft Key F unction “Soft ” keys are keys that change functions while you operate your phone. There are two soft keys on the base and three on each handset.
The Basics 26 Using the F our - W ay Function K ey Y our handset and base have a four-way function key that allows you to move the cursor (or highlighted area) on the display and access the most commonly used features at the touch of a button. Press the left side of this key to open the phonebook.
27 The Basics Using the Base Menus T o open the menu, press MENU/SELECT at the center of the four -way function key . Highlight the option you want by pressing or on the four - way function key . This will move the cursor; the option currently highlighted appears in reversed out text.
The Basics 28 Entering T ext fr om Y our Phone Y ou can use the number keypad on your handset or base to enter text by referring to the letters printed on each number key . When you press the number key in a text entry eld, the phone displays the rst letter printed on the number key .
29 The Basics Basic Setup Changing the Dial Mode Y our phone can communicate with the telephone network in two different ways: tone dialing or pulse dialing. Nowadays, most phone networks use a method called tone dialing, so your phone comes programmed for tone dialing.
The Basics 30 Selecting a Language for the Display Y our handset and base display support three languages: English, French and Spanish. The language selection must be set separately for each handset or the base. The default language is English. For the Handset Display Press the MENU soft key .

Beyond the Basics 36 Adding Optional Accessor y Handsets T en Multi-Handset Expandability Y our phone supports up to ten handsets, including any handsets supplied with your phone. Y ou can now place a fully-featured cordless handset anywhere AC power is available to connect the handset charger .
37 Beyond the Basics Resetting Handsets If you want to register the handset to a different base or replace a handset with another one, you must rst de-register the handset to clear the existing registration data. When the handset is in standby , press the MENU soft key .
Beyond the Basics 38 The memory area for the phonebook and Caller ID are separated in your base. Therefore anytime 100 entries are available for the phonebook and Caller ID record in the base. When phonebook entries are full, you will hear a beep and MEMORY FULL appears.
39 Beyond the Basics Creating Phonebook Entries T o store names and numbers in your phonebook, please follow these steps: When the phone is in standby , press . T o create a new phonebook entry: HANDSET : Press the NEW soft key . BASE: F or the rst entry , press the ST ORE soft key .
Beyond the Basics 40 When you have nished: HANDSET : Press the OK soft key . Y ou can enter the second phone number with the same procedure as the rst phone number . T o skip, press the OK soft key again without entering the second phone number .

At the touch of a button, you can place the caller on hold, send them to your voice mail service, or conference them into your current call. Y ou must subscribe to Call W aiting and Call W aiting Deluxe to use these features.
57 Beyond the Basics Redialing a Number Y ou can quickly redial the last three numbers dialed on each handset and the last ten numbers dialed on the base. Using the Redial List 1. While you are on a call: HANDSET : Press the MUTE soft key . BASE: Press MENU/SELECT or the OPTIONS soft key , and then select MUTE from the menu.
63 Beyond the Basics DirectLink TM Communication Feature (Handset Only) A pair of handsets (or two pairs of handsets at one time) can function as two-way radios. This feature is called DirectLink. T o make a call with the DirectLink feature, you must activate this feature on both handsets.

T o answer an intercom page: HANDSET : Press / FLASH , INT CM/HOLD , or the ANSWER soft key . If Auto T alk is on, the handset will answer when you pick up the handset from the cradle.

81 Beyond the Basics Recording a Conversation Y ou can record a conversation between two seconds and ten minutes long from the handset or the base. These recorded conversations are treated just like regular messages. When the answering machine is full, will appear on the base display and recording will be terminated.

Beyond the Basics 86 T roubleshooting If your phone is not performing to your expectations, please try these simple steps rst. Symptom Suggestion The CHARGE indicator won ’t illuminate when the handset is placed in the cradle. Make sure the AC adapter is plugged into the base or the charger (if you have more than one handset) and wall outlet.
87 Beyond the Basics Symptom Suggestion The handset doesn ’t ring or receive a page. Make sure that you are not too far from the base. Charge the battery in the handset for at least 15-20 hours by placing the handset on the base or charging cradle.
Beyond the Basics 88 Symptom Suggestion Y ou cannot register the handset at the base. Charge the battery pack in the handset for 15-20 hours. Make sure you have not stored ten handsets already . De-register the handset (see “ Resetting Handsets ” on page 37).
89 Beyond the Basics Symptom Suggestion Messages are incomplete. The incoming messages may be too long. Remind callers to leave a brief message. The memory may be full. Delete some or all of the saved messages. • • There is no sound on the base or handset speaker during call monitoring or message playback.
