4 FEATURES Your RadioShack TR C-300 Voice Activat- ed Microcassette Tele-Recorder is pe rfect for your home or office. It records tele- phone calls you make or receive from a telephone. You can also u se it a s a conve- nient tape recorder to record other events such as lectures, interviews, and meet- ings.
5 Voice Activated Recording (VOX) — records only when it receives sound, to eliminate blank se ctions on the tape and save battery power. Play/Record Auto-Stop — stops the tape movement when the recorder reaches the end of the tape during re cording or play- back.
6 Built-In Microphone — lets you record without connecting an external micro- phone. Cue/Review Function — lets you ad- vance or rewind the tape during play to find a specific section on the tape.
7 Automatic Level Control — automatically adjusts the recording level. Note: You need at least one 30-minute mi- crocassette tape. If you use a leaderless incoming message tape, recording starts immediately. You al so need either two AA batteries or an AC or DC adapter.
8 Important: Every state has different regu- lations governing the rec ording of conver- sations over the teleph one. Be sure to check your local, state and federal laws be- fore using this product to record any tele- phone conver sation in orde r to determine that your use is in compliance with such laws or guidel ines.

12 PREPARATION Connecting P ower Using A C P ower You can operate your recorder from AC power using an optional AC adapter, such as Cat. No. 273-1654B. Caution : You must use a Class 2 power source that supplies 3 volts DC and delivers at least 300 mA.
13 Follow these steps to connect your re cord- er to AC power. 1. Set the A C adapter’ s v oltage s witch to 3V . 2. Inser t the 3.4 mm outer d iameter/1.3 mm inner diameter adapter plug into the adapter’s socket to re ad TIP+. 3. Inser t the plug into the recorder’ s DC 3V jack.
14 Using Battery P ower You can power your reco rder with two AA batteries (not supplied). For the best per- formance and longest life, we recommend RadioShack alkaline batteri es. Caution: Do not mix old and new ba tter- ies, or different types of batteries (standard or alkaline).
15 1. Press the batter y compar tment cov er’ s tab and slide the cover in the direction of the arrow . 2. Inser t the batteries into the compar t- ment, as indicated by the polarity sym- bols (+ and –) ma rked inside. 3. Replace the cov er . Replace the batterie s when the BA T T E RY indicator dims or does not light.
16 Warning: Dispose of old batteri es promptly and proper ly . Do not bur n or bur y t h e m . Caution: If you do not plan to use the recorder with batteries for a f ew weeks, remov e the batter ies. Batteries can leak ch emicals th at can des tro y electronic par ts.
17 Cautions : • Y ou must use a po wer source that supplies 3 volts DC and delivers at least 300 mA. Its center tip must be set to posi- tive and its plug must fit the TRC- 300's DC 3V jack. T he recommend ed adapter meets these specifications.
18 Follow these steps to power the recorder from your vehicle’s battery. 1. Set the adapter’ s voltage s witch to 3V . 2. Inser t the 3.4 mm outer d iameter/1.3 mm inner diameter adapter into th e adapter’ s sock et to read TIP+. 3. Inser t the adapter’ s barrel plug into the recorder’ s DC 3V jac k.
19 INSTALLATION You can connect the recorder di rectly to a single line, a multi-line, or a digital tel e- phone system using a telephone that is connected to that line. To avo id da mage to the recorder, select a location that is out of the way of norma l activity.
20 1. Disconnect the handset and its coiled cord from the handset jack on y our phone. 2. Plug the end of the handset cord i nto the recorder’ s H ANDSET IN jac k.

22 Listening Safel y To protect your hearin g, follow these guidelines when you use an earphone . • Do not listen at extremely high v ol ume le v els. Extended high-volume listening can lead to p er manent hear ing loss. • Set the volume to its low est le v e l bef ore you begin listening.
23 T raffic Safety • Do not wear an earp hone or head- phones while operating a motor vehi- cle or r iding a bicycl e. This can create a traffic hazard and could be illega l in some areas.

25 2. Press ST OP/EJ to open the cassette compar tment door . Inser t the micro- cassette into the compar tment with the side you want to use f acing up against the cov er and the full reel o n the left.
26 • Replace any tape at least once a year , or more often if it is used heavily . • Do not change the tape spee d while recording. V oice Activ ated T elephone Recor ding (V O X) 1. Load a microcassette tape and set VOX to ON . 2. Set TEL-PLA Y/NOR.
27 4. Press REC. Both REC and PLA Y lock down, and recording begins. Caution: Do not f orce down t he REC bu tt on when an erase protect i on ta b is remov ed or you will damage the recorder . (See “Pre venting Accidental Erasure” on P age 41.) 5.
28 • The built-in automatic lev el control automatically sets the recording le ve l once recording star ts. • When you use the V O X feature , recording begins when the recorder picks up sound and stops a fe w seconds after the sound stops. 6. Recording stops when the tape reaches the end of the cassette.
29 3. Set T APE SPEED to the desired recording speed. 4. Press RE C to begin recording. 5. Adjust VO L U M E until the sound source star ts the record er . Notes : • The built-in automatic lev el control automatically sets the recording le ve l once recording star ts.
30 Manual T elephone Recor ding 1. Load a tape and set VOX to OFF . 2. Set TEL-PLA Y/NOR./T EL-REC to TEL- REC . 3. Set T APE SPEED to the desired recording speed. Set it to 1.2cm to double the tape’ s reco rding time, or to 2.4cm for higher quality sound.
31 5. Rotate VO L U M E to adjust the record- ing volume. Note: T o temporarily stop recording, slide PA U S E to ON . T o resume record- ing, slide PA U S E in the opposite direc- tion. 6. Recording stops when the tape reaches the end of the cassette.
32 3. Set T APE SPEED to the desired recording speed. 4. Press RE C to begin recording. 5. Adjust VO L U M E between the minimum and mid-range positions f or dictation and between the mid-range and maxi- mum positions f or recording confer- ences. Notes: • T o temporarily stop recording, slid e PA U S E to ON.
33 6. Press ST OP/EJ to stop recording. Recor ding with an External Micr ophone You can use an externa l microphone to make high-quality recordings. Plug an op- tional external microphone , available at your local RadioShack store, into th e MIC jack.
34 PLA YING A T APE Pla ying a Phone Con versation T ape 1. Load the tape and set TEL-PLA Y/NOR/ TEL-REC to TEL-PLA Y . 2. Set T APE SPEED to the speed used to record the microcassette tape . 3. Press PLA Y . Playbac k only through the handset begins.

Adjust VO L U M E to a comfor table lis- tening lev e l. 5. T o play th e other side of th e tape , press ST OP/EJ , re mov e and tur n over the tape, and re-inser t it.
36 Pla ying a Prerecor ded T ape 1. Load a prerecorded tape then set TEL- PLA Y/NOR/TEL-REC to NOR or TEL- PLA Y . 2. F ollow steps 2–6 under “Pla ying a Phone Conv ersation T ape” on P age 34.
37 To quickly locate desired sections of a tape during play, slide the switch towards F AST F/CUE or REW/REVIEW to hear p lay- back as the tape fast-forward s or rewinds. When you release the switch, normal play resumes. Note the counter posi tion(s) at any point(s) you might want to return to lat- er.
38 CARE To enjoy your Rad ioSha ck TRC-300 Voi ce Activated Microcassette Tel e-Recorder for a long time: • K eep the TRC-300 dr y . If it gets wet, wipe it dr y immediately . • Use and store the TRC-30 0 only in nor mal temperature environments. • Handle the TRC-300 gently and care- fully .
39 Modifying or tampering with the TRC -300's internal components can cau se a malfunc- tion and invalidate its wa rranty. If your TRC-300 is not performing as it should, take it to your local RadioShack store for assistance.
40 To restore the sound qual ity, fast-forward the tape from the beginn ing to the end of one side, then completely rewi nd it. Then loosen the tape reels b y gently tappin g each side o f the casset te’s outer she ll on a flat surface. Caution: Be careful not to damage the cassette when tapping it.
41 You can quickly erase both sides of a cas- sette tape using a bulk tape era ser (Cat. No. 44-232). Note : If you use metal or high-bias type tape, the recorded sound might not be erased properly. Preventing Acci dental Erasure Cassette tapes have two erase-protection tabs — one for each side.
42 If you later de cide to record on a ta pe side after you have removed the erase-protec- tion tab, place a piece of strong plastic tape over that side’s erase-protecti on hole. Be sure you cover only the hole originally covered by the erase-p rotection tab.
43 Use the following cleaning procedure after about every 20 hours of operation. 1. Remov e the batteries a nd disconnect any ot he r po wer source. 2. Open the cassette compar tment door . 3. Use a pointed object to gentl y push the erase protection tab sensor to the left, then press REC to e xpose the tape-handling par ts.
