8 2 Cr eating your network P ositioning your r outer F or the best wireless signal transmission between the wir eless router and the network devices c onnec ted to it, ensur e that you: • Place the wir eless router in a centraliz ed area for a maximum wireless co verage for the network devices .
9 What y ou need T o set up your network, you need one or t wo comput ers that meet the following sy stem requiremen ts: • Ethernet RJ-45 (LAN) por t (10Base - T/100Base - TX/ 1000Base T X) • IEEE 802.
10 Setting up your wireless r outer Wir ed connection IMPORT ANT! • Use wired connection in setting up your wir eless router to avoid possible setup pr oblems due to wireless uncertainty. • Before setting up y our ASUS wireless router , do the following: • If you are replacing an existing r outer , disconnect it from your network.
11 2. Using the bundled network cable, c onnec t your computer t o your wireless r outer ’ s LAN por t. IMPORT ANT! Ensure that the LAN LED is blinking. 3 Using another network cable, c onnec t your modem to your wireless rout er ’ s W AN por t. 4.

13 3. Fr om the Local Ar ea Network (LAN) Settings screen, untick Use a pr oxy ser ver for y our LAN. 4. Click OK when done. MA C OS 1. Fr om your Safari brow ser , click Safari > Pr eferences > A dvanced > Change Settings... 2. Fr om the Network screen, deselect FTP Pr oxy and W eb Pro x y (HT TP).
14 3. T o obtain the iPv4 IP settings automatically , tick Obtain an IP address automatically . T o obtain the iP v6 IP settings automatically , tick Obtain an IPv6 address automatically . 4. Click OK when done. B. Set the TCP/IP settings to aut omatically obtain an IP address .
15 MA C OS 1. Click the Apple icon located on the top left of your screen. 2. Click System P ref erences > Network > Congure ... 3. F rom the T CP/IP tab , select Using DHCP in the Congur e IPv4 dropdown list. 4. Cllick Apply Now when done.
16 3 C onfiguring via the w eb GUI Logging int o the web GUI Y our ASUS Wireless Rout er comes with an intuitive web gr aphics user interface (GUI) that allows you to easily c onfigure its various featur es through a web browser such as In ternet Explorer , Firef ox, Safari, or Google Chrome.
17 3. The wireless rout er ’ s web GUI launches. Use the web GUI to configure v arious settings. Setting up the Internet connection NO TE : When setting the Internet connection for the first time , press the Reset button on your wir eless router to reset it to its factor y default settings.
18 2. The wireless rout er automatically detects if your ISP connection type is D ynamic IP , PPPoE , PPTP , L2TP , and Static IP . Key in the necessary information for your ISP c onnec tion type. IMPORT ANT ! Obtain the necessary information about your Internet connection type from your ISP .
19 NO TES : • The auto-detection of your ISP connection type takes place when you configure the wir eless router for the first time or when your wireless rout er is reset to its default settings. • If QIS failed to detect your Internet connection type, click Sk ip to manual setting and manually configure y our connection settings.
20 4. Y our Internet and wireless settings are displayed . Click Next to continue . 5. Read the wireless network connection tutorial. W hen done, click Finish .
21 Setting up the wireless security settings T o protect your wireless network from unauthorized acc ess, you need to configure its security settings. T o set up the wireless security settings: 1. Key in 192.168.1.1 on your w eb browser . 2. On the login screen, k ey in the default user name ( admin ) and password ( admin ), then click OK .
22 5GHz security settings 4. On the Wireless name (SSID) field , k ey in a unique name for your wireless netw ork. 5. F rom the Security Lev el dropdown list, selec t the encr yption method for y our wireless network. IMPORT ANT ! The IEEE 802.11n standard prohibits using High Throughput with WEP or WP A-TKIP as the unicast cipher .
23 Managing your netw ork clients T o manage your network clients: 1. Launch the wireless router’ s web GUI. 2. On the Network Map screen, select the Client Status icon t o display the inf ormation about your network clients.
24 NO TE: T o use this feature , you need to plug a USB storage device , such as a USB hard disk or USB flash drive, to the USB 3.0 por t on the rear panel of your wireless r outer . Ensure that the USB storage device is f ormatted and par titioned properly .
25 NO TES : • F or more deta ils, ref er to the section U sing the Netw ork Plac e (Samba) Share service and Using the FTP Share service in this user manual. • On USB External HDD/Flash disk: • The wireless rout er works with most USB HDDs/Flash disks (up to 2TB size) and supports read-write access for F A T16, F A T32, EXT2, EXT3, and NTFS.
26 Crea ting your Guest Networ k The Guest Network pro vides Internet connectivit y for tempor ar y visitors without pro viding access to your priva te network. T o create your guest netw ork: 1. Launch the wireless router’ s web GUI. 2. On the Guest Network screen, click Create to crea te a network for y our visitors.
27 Using the T raffic Manager Managing QoS (Quality of S er vice) Bandwidth The Quality of Ser vice (QoS) allows you to set the bandwidth priority and manage the net work traffic. T o set up the bandwidth priority : 1. Launch the wireless router’ s web GUI.
28 Monitoring T raffic The traffic monitor function allows y ou to assess the bandwidth usage and speed of your Internet , LAN, Wir ed, WLAN (2.4GHz or 5GHz) connections. Using the USB Extension The USB Extension function provides AiDisk , S er vers C enter , Network P rinter Ser ver and Download Master submenus .
29 Using AiDisk f or Files Sharing AiDisk allows you t o share files in the USB disk through the Internet. NO TE: Before using AiDisk, ensure that you hav e inser ted a USB disk into the USB port of your wireless router . T o use AiDisk: 1. Click the AiDisk icon in USB Extension.
30 3. Select the access rights that you want to assign t o the clients accessing your shar ed data. 4. Create y our domain name via the ASUS DDNS ser vices, selec t I will use the service and accept the T erms of ser vice and key in your domain name .
31 5. Click F inish to finish the setup. 6. T o access the FTP site that you cr eated , launch a web browser or a third-part y FTP client utility and key in the f tp link ( ftp://<domain name> ) you have pr eviously created .
32 Using the Servers C enter service Y our wireless router allows UP nP (Universal Plug and Pla y) multimedia devices , such as PS3 and XBox 360, to access multimedia files from the USB disk connected to y our wireless router . NO TE : Before using the UPnP Media Server function, install a wireless adapter on your UP nP device.
33 Using the Netw ork Place (Samba) Share service Network Place (Samba) Share allo ws you to set the account and permission for samba service. T o use S amba share: 1. Click the Network plac e (Samba) Share tab in the Ser vers Cent er of USB Ex tension.
34 Using the FTP Shar e ser vice Sharing files via the FTP server The ASUS Wireless Router enables y ou to share files from your USB storage device via the FTP server with computers in LAN or through the Internet.
35 4. F rom the list of files/folders , selec t the type of access rights that you want t o assign for specific files/folders: • R/W : Select this option to assign read/write access for a specific file/folder . • W : Select this option to assign write only access for a specific file/folder .
36 Using the Miscellaneous setting Miscellaneous setting allows you to c onfigure other settings for the USB disk, including maximum login user , device name, work group and language on FTP server . T o use miscellaneous setting: 1. Click the Miscellaneous setting tab in the Ser vers C enter of USB Extension.
37 C onfiguring the Adv anced settings Adv anced Setting allows you to c onfigure the advanced f eatures of your wireless r outer . Setting up the DHCP Ser ver Y ou may enable the DHCP Ser ver function in your wireless router so your network clients can automa tically obtain IP addresses from your wir eless router .
38 3. In the Enable the DHCP Ser ver? field , tick Y es . 4. In the IP P ool Star ting Address field , k ey in the star ting IP address. 5. In the IP P ool Ending Address field , key in the ending IP address.
39 T o upgrade the firmware: 1. Click Adv anced Setting from the na vigation menu at the left side of your screen. 2. Under the Administr ation menu, click Firmwar e Upgrade . 3. In the New F irmware F ile field, click Browse t o locate the new firmware in your c omputer .
40 Restoring/Saving/U ploading settings T o restore/sa ve/upload the settings: 1. Click Adv anced Setting from the na vigation menu at the left side of your screen.
41 Setting up your networ k printer Use the Network P rinter Setup utility to set up a USB printer on your wireless r outer and allow network clients to access the USB printer . NO TES : • T o check if your USB printer is compatible with y our ASUS wireless router , refer to the Plug-n-S hare Disk Suppor t List at http://ev ent.
42 4. F ollow the onscreen instructions to set up your hardw are, then click Next . 3. Unzip the downloaded file and click the P rinter icon to run the network printer setup program.
43 5. W ait for a f ew minutes for the initial setup to finish. Click Next . 6. Click F inish to complete the installation..
44 8. After the printer ’ s dr iver installation is complet ed, network clients can now use the printer . 7. F ollow the Windows ® OS instructions to install the printer driver .
45 4 Using the utilities NO TES: • Install the wireless router's utilities fr om the bundled suppor t CD . • If Autorun is disabled , run setup .
46 F irmware Restor ation F irmware Restoration is used on an ASUS Wireless Router tha t failed during its firmware upgrading process . I t uploads the firmware that you specify . T he process takes about three to four minutes. T olaunchtherescuemodeandusetheFirmware Restoration utility: 1.
47 NO TE : This is not a firmware upgrade utility and cannot be used on a working ASUS Wireless Router . Normal fir mware upgrades must be done through the web in ter face. Refer to Chapter 3: C onfiguring via the web GUI for mor e details. 5. Specify a firmware file , then click Upload .
