Preparation 7 Location of Controls Handset Handset sof t keys T wo soft keys are used to select functions displayed directly above each key . Functions displayed above the keys will change depending on the state of use. On this sample display , “ (VE) ” and “ Mute ” are displayed above the soft keys.
8 Inst allation Connections • USE ONL Y WITH Panasonic AC ADAPT OR PQL V1. • The AC adaptor must remain connected at all times. (It is normal for the adaptor to feel warm during use.) • If your unit is connected to a PBX which does not support Call Display and voice mail services, you cannot access those services.
Preparation 9 Inst allation Inst alling the Battery in the Handset Insert the battery ( 1 ), and press it down until it snaps into the compartment ( 2 ). Close the cover . T o replace th e batter y: Press the notch on the cover firmly and slide it as indicated by the arrow .

11 Preparation Programmable Settings Programming Guidelines This unit has several programma ble f unctions which can be selected from the function menu on the display (p. 12). Preparation 15 Programmable Settings Line Mode The line mode is preset to “B” and generally shou ld not be adjusted. If “ Line in use ” on the handset is not displayed properly or the IN USE indicator on the base unit does not light properly , the line mode selection is incorre ct.
Programmable Settings 16 Ringer V olume Y ou can select the handset or base unit ringer volumes to high, medium, low , or off. The factory preset is HIGH. If the handset and base unit ringer is turned off, the handset or base unit will ring at the low level for intercom calls, and will not ring for outside calls.

Programmable Settings 18 Ringer T one Y ou can set the handset an d base unit ringers to use one of 7 ringer patterns for outside calls. “T one 1” to “T one 3” are bell ringer patterns. “Melody 1” to “Melody 4” are melody patterns. The fa ctory preset is “T one 1”.
Preparation 19 Programmable Settings Base unit ringer tone (use either the handset or the base unit) Make sure the base unit is not being us ed. Setting the base unit ringer tone by using the Press VOLUME [ < ] or [ > ] , then select the desired rin ger tone by pressing [1] to [7] .

Making Calls 24 Using the Base Unit • T o switch to the handset while using the base unit speakerphone: — If the handset is off the base unit, press [ C ] or [ s ] on the handset, then press [SP-PHONE] on the base unit. — If the handset is o n the base unit, j ust lift up.
Basic Operation 25 Answering Calls When a call is received, the unit ring s, “ Incoming call ” is displayed, and the Ringer/Message Alert indicator on the handset and the IN USE indicator on the base unit flash rapidly . If you subscribe to a Call Display service, see page 26.
26 Call Display Service This unit is compatible with Cal l Display services offered by your tel ephone company . If you subscribe to Call Display service, caller names and phone numbers will be displayed and recorded in the Caller List.
Call Display Service Basic Operation 27 T alking Call Display T o use this feature, you nee d to subscri be to a Call Display service. For further information, please contact your telephone company . • The unit will anno unce the caller ’s name as received from the tel ephone company .
28 Call Display Service Base unit T alking Ca ll Display feature This feature must be turned on or off for the base unit by using the handset. Using the Caller List The unit can record information for up to 50 different callers and store this information in the Calle r List.
Using the Caller List Basic Operation 29 V iewing the Caller List • If there is no name information for a caller and you do not store the name and phone number in the phone book, the disp lay will only show the phone number . • If you do not press any buttons for 60 se conds, the unit will exit th e Caller List.
Using the Caller List 30 Editing the Caller ’ s Phone Number Y ou can edit a phone number in the Caller L ist by adding the long distance code “1” or removing its area code. • The number edited in step 4 will no t be maintained in the Caller List.

33 Advanced Operation Phone Book The handset can store up to 50 names and phone numbers in its phone book. Y ou can make a call by selecting a name or number from the phone book. S toring Names and Numbers • T o store numbers for calling card access (see “Chain Dial” on page 36), we recommend that you add pauses after eac h item.

42 Conference Calls While you are talking with an outside caller , the ba se unit user or the handset user can join the co nversation and establish a confe rence call. • T o leave the conference, press [OFF] on the handset or press [SP-PHONE] on the base unit.
43 Advanced Operation Voice Mail Service V oice mail i s an automatic an swering service offered by your telephone company . If you subscribe to this service, your telephone comp any’s voice mail system can answer calls for you when you are unavailable to answer the phone or when your line is busy .

Press [ C ] , [ s ] or [SP-PHONE] to listen to the dial tone. If you hear a series of dial tones followed by a continuous dial tone, this indicates that a new message was recorded.
