Chapter 1: Introduction Overview Thank you for choosing the Thecus N4100P RO IP Storage Server. The Thecus N4100PRO is an easy-to-use storage server that allows a dedicated approach to storing and distributing data on a n etwork.
Backup Server Don’t leave precious data to chance. With advanced backup capabiliti es, you can easily upload mission critical files to the N4100 PRO, and even automate your backup tasks for true peace-of-mind. To find out how to backup yo ur files with the N4100PRO, re fer to Chapter 4: Backup > Nsync .
Package Contents Your N4100PRO package should co ntain the following items: z N4100PRO Unit x1 z Power Cord x1 z QIG (Quick Installation Guide) x1 z CD-Title x2 (DriveCl one5 Pro CD & Universal CD.
Front Panel The N4100PRO’s front panel displays the unit ’s array of status LED’s a nd is also where you’ll find the power butto ns. See th e table below for a detailed explanation of each: Item Description HDD Trays • There are four hard disk drive (HDD) trays.
Item Description Lock • The tra y lock let s you phy sically s ecure t he HDD wit h accessory keys. Latch • Use the latch to open and remove or close and secure the tray.
Chapter 2: Hardware Inst allation Overview Your N4100PRO is designed for easy inst allation. To help you get started, the following chapter will help you quickly ge t your N4100PRO up and running. Please read it carefully to prevent damaging yo ur unit during installation.
Cable Connections Make the following connecti ons on the Thecus N4100PRO and then power up the unit: 1. Connect an Ethernet cable from your network to the WAN port on the back panel of the N4100PRO. 2. Connect the provided p ower cord into the universal power socket o n the back panel.
Chapter 3: First T ime Setup Overview Once the hardware is installed, ph ysically connected to your network, and powered on, you can configure the N4100PRO so that it is accessible to your network users. There are two ways to set up your N4100PRO: using the Thecus Setup Wizar d or the LCD display .
4. Select the N4100PRO that you like to configure. 5. Login with the administrator account and password. The default account and password are both “ admin ”.
8. Finished! Access the N4100PRO Web Administrator Inte rface by pressing the Start Browser button. You ca n also configure another N4100PRO at this point by clicking the Setup Other Device button.

Step 1: Network Setup From the Web Administration Interf ace, you can configure the network settings of the N4100PRO for your network. You can access the Netwo rk menu from the menu bar. For details on how to configure your network settings, refer to Ch apter 4: System Management > Network Management .

Chapter 4: System Administration Overview The N4100PRO provides an easily accessible Web Administrati on Interface . With it, you can configure and monitor the N4100PRO anywhere on th e network. Web Administration Interface Make sure your network is connected to the Internet.
Menu Bar Item Description System Information Current system status of the N4100PRO. System Management Various N4100PRO system settings and i nformation. System Network Informati on and settings for network connections, as well as various services of the N4100PRO.
Temperature. Green: Systematic temperature is normal. Red: Systematic temperature is unusual . Click to go to System Status page as short cut. Network. Green: Connection to network is normal. Red: abnormal connectio n to the network Logout Click to logout Web Ad ministration Interface.
Product Information Item Description Manufacturer Displays the name of t he system manufacture r. Product No. Shows the mode l number of the system. Firmware version Shows the current firmware version. Up time Displays the total run time of the system.
See the following table for a detailed description of each item: System Logs Item Description All Provide s all log informat ion inc luding s ystem mes sages, war ning messages and error messages. INFO Records information about system messages. WARN Shows only warning messages.
System Management The System Management menu gives you a wealth of sett ings that you can us e to configure your N4100PRO’s system administra tion functions. You can set up system time, system notificati ons, and even upgrade fi rmware from this menu.
Notification Configuration Item Description Beep Notification Enable or disable the system beeper that beeps when a probl em occurs. Email Notification Enable or disable email notifications of system problems. SMTP Server Specifies the hostname/IP address of the SMTP server.
Follow the steps below to upgrade your firmware: 1. Use the Brow se button to find the fi rmware file. 2. Press Apply . 3. The beeper beeps and the Busy LED b links until the upgrade is complete. NOTE • The beeper only beeps if it is enab led in th e Syst em Not ificat ion menu .
Shutdown the system when the battery charge is less than Amount of UPS battery remaining before system should auto-shutdown. Apply Press Apply to save your changes.
System will turn off at 8:00 AM on Monday. System w ill turn off at 16:00 PM on Monday, if it was on. If the system was al ready off at 16:00 PM on Mo nday, system will stay off. Wake-Up On LAN (WOL) The N4100PRO has the ability to be awok en fro m sleep mode via WAN port.
New Password Type in a new administrator password. Confirm Password Type the new password again to confi rm. Apply Press this to save your changes. ˙ Config Mgmt From the menu, choose the Config Mgmt item and the System Configur ation Download /Upload screen appears.
˙ Reboot & Shut down Resetting to factory defaults will no t erase the data stored in the hard disks, but WILL revert all the settings to t he factory default values. WARNING From the menu, choose Reboot & Shutdo wn item, and the Shutdown/Reboot System screen appears.

WAN Configuration Item Description Host name Host name that identifies the N4100PRO on the network. Domain name Specifies the domain name of the N4100PR O. WINS Server To set a server name fo r NetBIOS computer. MAC Address MAC address of the network in terface.
LAN Configuration Item Description MAC Address Displays the MAC address of the LA N interface. Jumbo Frame Support Enable or disable Ju mbo Frame Support on the LAN i nterface. IP Specifies the IP address of the LAN interface. Netmask Specifies the Network Mask of the LAN interface.

Protocol. You can chang e any of these items and press Apply to confirm your settings. A description of each item follows: Apple Network Configuration Item Description AFP Server Enable or disable Apple File S ervice to use the N4100PRO with MAC OS-based systems.
Apply Click Apply to save your changes. FTP N4100PRO can act as a FTP server, enabling us ers to download and upload files with their favorite FTP programs. From the System Network menu, choose the FTP item, and the FTP screen appears. You can change any of these item s and press Apply to confir m your settings.
Media Server With the built-i n Media Server capability, the N4100PRO provides media streaming service to stand-alone networked home media adapters that support the UPnP AV protocol or are Digital Liv ing Network Allian ce (DLNA) standard compliant.
Connecting DMAs to the Media Server Next, it’s time to con nect your Dig ital Media Adapter (DMA) to the m edia server: 1. Connect your DMA to your Medi a Server a. Configure your DMA to use a Dy namic IP address. The IP address wi ll be assigned by the router.

Bonjour Setting Bonjour, is Apple Inc.'s trade name for its implementation of Zeroconf, a service discovery protocol. Bonjour locates devices such as printers, as well as other computers, and the services that those devices offer o n a local network usi ng multicast Domain Name Syst em service records.
Firmware Shows the SATA hard disk firmware version. Status Indicates the status of the disk. Can read OK , Warning , or Failed . Bad Block scan Yes to start scan Bad Block. Total Capacity Shows the total SATA hard disk capacity. Disk Power Management The administrator can set the disk to power down after a period of inactivit y.

Current Pending Sector Current count of unstable sectors (waiting for remapping). The raw value of this attribute indicates the total number of sectors waiting for remapping.
RAID Information Item Description ID ID of the current RAID volume. RAID Level Shows the current RAID configuration. Status Indicates status of the RAID. Can read either Healthy , Degraded , or Damaged . Disks Used Hard disks used to form the current RAID volume.

With a RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 6, or RAID 10 volume, you can also add a spare disk after the RAID is created. See Chapter 6: Tips and Tricks > Adding a Spare Disk for details. For more information on RAID, see Appendix C: RAID Basics . RAID Level You can set the storage volume as JBOD , RAID 0 , RAID 1 , RAID 5, RAID 6 or RAID 10 .
Remove RAID Click to remove th e RAID volume. All user dat a and iSCSI has been created in selected RAID volume will be removed. To remove a RAID volume, f ollow the steps below: 49.
1. On the RAID List screen, select the RA ID volume by clicking on its radio button, and cl ick RAID Info rmation to open the RAID Configur ation screen.
Migrating a RAID Once a RAID volume has been created, yo u m ay want to move i t to other physical dr i v e s o r c h a ng e t h e RA I D a r r a y a l l t og e t h e r. T o mi g r a t e a R A ID 0 , RA I D 1, R A I D 5 or RAID 6 volume, follo w the steps below : 1.

Allocating Space for iSCSI Volume To allocate space for an iSCSI v olume on the current RAID volume, follow the steps below: 1. Under the Volume Allocation List , click iSCSI Target . The Create iSCSI Volume screen appears. Create iSCSI Volume Item Description RAID ID ID of current RAID volume.
Month Select the current month from the dropdown. Username Enter a username. Password Enter a password. Password Confirm Reenter the chosen password 2. Designate the percentage to be allocated from the Allocation drag bar. 3. Enable the i SCSI Target Service by selecting Enable .

Adding Folders On the Folder screen, press the Add button and the Add Fol der screen appears. This screen allows you to add a f older. After entering th e information, press Apply to create new folder.
Add Folder Item Description Folder Name Enter the name of the folder. Descrip tion Provid e a desc ription the fo lder. Browseable Enable or disable users from browsing the folder contents. If Yes is selected, then the share folder will be browseable.

Folder and sub-folders Access Contr ol List (ACL) On the Folder screen, press the ACL button, and the ACL setting screen appears. This screen allows you to configure access to the specific folder and sub-folders for users and groups.
3. Continue selectin g groups and users an d assigning them access levels using the column buttons. 4. To remove a group or user from an access level column, press the Remove but ton in that colu mn. 5. When you are finished, press Appl y to confirm your ACL setti ngs.
The system will your search, ente list up to 1,000 users from the chosen category. To narrow r a search term in the blank provided. NOTE Stackable NAS The N4100PRO’s capacity can be expand ed even further using the stackable function.
Next, input the target IP address of the stacka ble device and click the Discovery button. The system will list available target vol umes from the inputted IP ad dress. Once IP with volume h ave been set, you may need to input a va lid user name and password to validate your access rights.
From the figure above, the Export share name is “pmmeeting”. The figures below show the result before and after via Mi crosoft Network Access with se ttings have been completed. Stack target with export share name “pmmeeting” No Stack Target The Browseable setting will be same method of set ting for system share folder.
The Public setting will be set same as wh at the setting for t he system share f older associated with the ACL permission setup. If Public is set to Yes , all users will be able to access it, and ACL button will be grayed out. If Public is set to No , the ACL button will be availab le on the Stack Target List wi ndow.
With this newly att ached stack target device, you will see the in formation displayed and also several options you can choose. In general, if attached stack target device has been used by another N52.
ACL settings will be exactly th e same as system folder that you may have setup previously. E. Reconnect a Stack Tar get The enabled stack target devices may be di sconnected by situations such as power outages or network disconnects. W hen this happens, the Reconnect button will available.
From the main menu, the ISO Mount feature is located under “Storage”. Please refer the figure below for reference. Select on the ISO mount funct ion and you will have th e screen shot appear as following. A. Add a ISO file From the figure above, select ISO fi le from drop down share list.
To mount new ISO file, select fr om listed ISO file and inpu t desired mounting n ame into “Mount as:” field. C lick “ADD” with confirmation t o complete mounting ISO file. Or without “Mount as ” ISO file export name inp ut, system will automat ic to give the export name by ISO file name.
You could click “Un mount” to elimin ate mounted ISO file. B. Using ISO The mounted ISO file will be located same share folder with name giving. Please refer the screen shot below. ISO file “image” has m ounted as fo lder “Image” you could see.

2. On the Local User Setting screen, enter a name in the User Name box. 3. Enter a User ID number. If l eft blank, t he system will auto matically assign one. 4. Enter a password in the Password box and re-enter the password in the Confirm box. 5. Select which group the u ser will belong to .
Remove Users 1. Select an existing user from t he Local User Configuration screen. 2. Click on Remove button and the user is deleted from the system. Local Group Configuration From the Accounts me nu, choose the Group item, and the Local Group Configuration screen appears.
Local Group Configuration Item Description Add Press the Add button to add a user to the list of local groups. Edit Press the Edit button to modify a selected group from the system. Remove Press the Remove button to delete a selected grou p from the system.
1. On the Local Group Configuration screen, sel ect a group name from the list. 2. Press the Edit button to modify the members in a group. 3. To add a user into a group, sel ect the user from the User s List , and press the << button to move the user into the M embers List .
From the Accounts me nu, click Batch M gmt and the B atch Create Users and Groups dialogue will appear. To import your list of users and grou ps, follow these steps: 5. Click Browse… to locate your comma-separated text file. The informat ion in th e text file shou ld follow th is format: [USERNAME], [PASSWORD], [GROUP] 6.
Printer Information Item Description Manufacturer Displays the name of the USB printer manufacturer. Model Displays the mod el of the USB printer . Status Displays the status of the USB printer.

Type http://<Thecus_NAS>:631/printers/usb-printer in the box, where <Thecus_NAS_IP> is the IP address of the N4100PRO. Click Next . 6. Select or install a prin ter and then press OK . If your printer model is not listed, please con tact your printer manufact urer for help.
9. Done! Click Finish . iTunes® Server With the buil t-in iTunes server capability , the N4100PRO e nables digital music to be shared and played anywhe re on the network! From the Network menu, choose the iTunes item, and the iTunes Configuration screen appears.
Module Management Module Installation From the Modul e Management menu, choose the Module Installation item and the Module Management screen appears. From here , you can install separate software modules to extend the functionality of your N4100PRO. System Module The system module i s officially provided by Th ecus for new features added.

Add Nsync Task Item Description Task Name The name of your Nsync task. Target Server Manufacturer Select whether the target is a Thecus Product (e.g. N4100PRO) or FTP server. Nsync Mode Synchronize mode or Incremental mode . Target Server IP Address The IP address of your target server.
1. On the Nsync server, add a user for Nsync source (ex. nsyncsource1). For instructions on how to add a user on the N4100PRO, see Chapter 4: User and Groups Authenti cation> Local User Configuration > Add Users . 2. On the Nsync server, grant that user (ex.
1. Click Add to create a Backup task. The Add N ew Task dialog box appears. Add New Task Item Description Task Specifies a name for the current task. Source Click to specify the source folder/file location. Incremental Click to specify whether the backup will be i ncremental.

Chapter 5: Using the N4100PRO Overview Once the N4100PRO is setup and operating, users on the network may manage all varieties of digital music, photos, or files by simply using their web br owsers. To manage your personal files or access public files on the N4100PRO, just enter its I P address into your browser (default IP address is http://192.
6. To create a new folder within the curre nt folder, press the New folder button. When the screen appears enter a name fo r the folder. Press OK to create the folder. 7. T o u p l o a d a f i l e f r o m y o u r c o m p u t e r t o the current folder, press the New file (upload) button.

Windows XP Publishing Wizard There are many ways for a local user to upload pictures into their photo album. Users of Windows XP c an upload their pi ctures using the Windows X P Publishi ng Wizard. 1. Click on the XP Publishing Wizard icon on top right corn er.
4. Once the register f ile is inst alled, use the Window s file manager to browse the folder that contain s the picture you want to publish. On t he left pane, there will be an icon labeled “ Publish this folder to the Web ”. 5. Click on this icon and Web Publishing Wizard will start.
7. Your PC will start to conne ct to the Photo Web Server. 8. Select N4100PRO Photo Gallery Wizard to publish yo ur pictures to the N4100PRO. 9. Login into the N4100PRO with your local user name and password. 10. Create your album by entering an a lbum name and cli cking on the Cre ate Album button.
11. Select the album you w ant to upload your pi ctures to. 12. Confirm the target album. 13. Windows will show y ou that the picture upload is in progress.
14. When th e upload is finished, the Wizard will ask you whether if you wan t to go to the website. Click Finish to go to your Photo Web Server. 15. Click on the user’s icon to go to tha t user’s album. 16. You will see the user’s album list. Click on Album .
17. Finished! You will see the pictures just sele cted in the album. Managing Albums and Photos Icon Function Description Make Cover Make selected photo your cover picture. Back Return to the previ ous screen. Add Add a new album or photos. Modify Edit the name and description of the sel ected album or photo.
Creating Albums To create a photo album, follow the steps below: 1. Click the Add button to create a new album. 2. Enter a name f or the album, and ente r a description if you wish . Then, click on the Create Album b utton. Password Protecting Albums If you would like to put a password on a particular album, follow these steps: 1.
Slide Shows Slide shows are a great way to enjoy pi ctures stored on your N4100PRO. You can click on the Start Slide Show icon on the top righ t hand corner to start t he slide show. To stop the slide show, click on the Stop Slide Show icon on the top right hand corner.
1. Choose Go > Connect to Server… 2. Enter the network address for the server in the Server Address text box. When connecting using SM B/CIFS protocol, type: smb://192.168.1.100/Folder1 When connecting using AFP protocol, type: afp://192.168.1.100/Folder1 Click Connect .
3. You w ill now in stall the iSC SI Initia tor using the Setup Wizard. Click Next to continue. 4. Leave th e default selections and click Next . 5. Read the license agreement. T o continue with the inst allation, click I Agree and then click Next . 6.
7. Start the iSCSI In itiator by double-click ing its icon on the desktop. The iSCSI Initiator properties window w ill appear. 8. elect the Discovery tab. Under Target Po rtal s , click Add . S . Enter the IP address of the N410 PRO. Click OK . 9 0 10.
11. If you have not enabled CHAP, click OK to continue. If you have enabled CHAP, click Advanced . Under Advanced Settings, check the CHAP lo gin in forma tion ch eckb ox and ente r you r usern ame a nd password. Click OK . 12. Right click My Computer on the desktop and select Manage .
13. Click on Disk Management and you will see a new hard di sk listed. 4. Initializ e the new ha rd disk and you will then be able to use the iSC SI target as a local drive. Windows Vista ecause Windows Vista has th e Microsoft iSCSI Initiator pre- installed, you will not ave to install this piece of software.
Chapter 6: T ip s and T ricks SB Storage Expansion he N4100PRO supports external USB hard di sks through its three USB ports. Once USB hard disk has been successfully mo unte d, users can access the files on the SB hard disk under the USB HDD folder. The N4100PRO supports up to 6 USB xternal storage devices.
Replacing Damaged Hard Drives If you are using RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 6, or RAID 10, yo u can easily replace a damaged hard drive in the Thecus N4100PRO while keeping yo ur data secure with e system’s automatic data recov ery. To replace a hard disk drive in the N4100PRO: 4100PRO until it snaps into place.
Chapter 7: T roubleshooting orgot My Network IP Address you forget your netw ork IP address an d have no physical access to the system, ou can find out the IP addr ess by either looking direct ly onto the N4100PRO’s LCD anel, or by using the setup wizard to retrieve the IP of your N4100 PRO.
