Thank y o u for purchasing the Olympus Please re ad t hi s instruction manual carefully before using the camera. This camera wil l n ot operate unl ess t h e lens barrier i s opened. We al so recommend that yo u shoot at least on e roll of fi l m to familiarize yourself w it h t h e camera's features.
Loading t h e battery Before you begin Op en the battery compartment cover. *Remove t h e b attery i f yo u d o not pla n to use the camera f or an extended period of time. Insert th e new battery correctly as indicated below a nd close t h e bat - tery compartment cover tightly.
*Open t he battery compartment cover an d remove t h e battery, as illustrated below, w h e n replacing th e battery. *B e s ure t o close t h e l en s barrier wh en replacing th e battery. Op en the le ns barrier a s sho wn below until yo u hear a "Click" and check th e battery power remaining.
Ope n t h e ba c k cover by sliding t he ba c k cover release toward t he top of th e camera. Th e camera back will open. Simple point and shoot photography Loading t h e film This camera i s designed to use DX coded 35 m m f il m t o automatically se t film speed.
Prepare a "DX " fi l m cartridge. The camer a will s et itself auto- matically f or DX-coded fil m speeds f r o m I SO 50 t o 3200. *When using non-DX film, the fil m speed is automatically s et to I S O 1 0 0 . Insert the film cartridge into the camera.
Align the f il m leader wit h t h e re d f il m loading indicator. Adjust the length of the film leader before loading so that it matches wi t h the r ed loading indicator. Ma ke sure t he fi l m leader t ip i s no t b ent a nd t h e f i lm perforations ar e properly aligned and engaged as shown.
O p e n the le ns barrier until yo u he ar a "Click". B e s u re t h e exposure counter on t h e LCD panel will display a number " 1 " indicating t he first picture on t he roll. If the film is improperly loaded, t he LCD panel will display a blinking " E " a s shown in t he illustration (B) .
Unloading the f i l m The camera automatically rewinds the film wh en yo u reach th e end of th e roll. You will hear the m otor operating and t h e exposure counter wi ll count down a s the film i s rewinding. T h e final reading on t h e exposure counter before rewinding may be mo re t h an t h e n um b er of exposures specified f o r t h e film.
If yo u want to rewind th e f ilm before t he end o f a roll, press t he rewi nd but- to n wit h th e tip of a ballpoint pen. Do not use any device w ith a sharp tip and do no t p r e s s the rewind button t oo hard. Op en the back cover after the motor ha s stopped.
How to take pictures Slide t h e len s barrier a s fa r a s it wi ll g o until y ou h ea r a cli ck. (The shutter will no t release unless t h e lens barrier is fully open.) When the camera is not i n u se , alway s close t hi s b a r r i e r s o that the shutter w ill not release accidentally.

Position yo ur subject w it hi n th e autofocus frame. P r es s the shutter release button lightly a nd confirm that th e auto- focus l am p (green) to th e right o f the viewfinder i s l ig ht ed .

Press t h e shutter release button (Gently t o minimize camera shake.) As soon as t h e shutter i s released, t h e film wi ll automati- cally advance t o t h e ne xt frame. Yo u will hear th e motor operat- ing. The exposure counter wil l advance to t he ne xt frame when film winding i s completed.
Aut o flash photography ( 1 ) Taking pictures i n low light In l o w light situations, the flash wi ll activate automatically when the flash mode is AUTO or AUTO-S.
Th e flash wi ll activate automatically when the shutter re le as e button i s fully pressed. Flash shooting range: ( I S O 1 0 0 ) 0 . 3 5 m ( 1 . 1 ft.)—3.5 m (11.5 f t . ) (ISO 400) 0.35 m (1.1 ft.)—7m ( 2 3 ft.) *T he flash range as shown below is optimal f or color negative film.
If you are taking backlighted subjects, th e flash lamp (orange) an d r ed l amp on the front of th e camera wi l l light when t he shutter release button i s pressed halfway.
Camera functions an d controls Close-up photography Be careful of the flash's light when sh ooting people's faces in close- up photography. *When the distance betwee n the subject and th e camera is 0 .3 5 m ( 1 . 1 ft.), com- pose your shot within the close-up co rre ctio n marks a s shown in the illustration.
Focus lock Use t he locus lo ck when you wa nt t o position your subject outside t he autofocus frame i n the cen te r of t he viewfinder. Position you r subject in the autofocus frame a nd press t he shutter release button halfway. The autofocus indicator (green) w ill light in the viewfinder.
While keeping th e shutter release button pressed halfway, change th e position of you r subject in the viewfinder to achieve t h e desired composition.
Self-timer photography *After t he shutter is released, t h e s e l f - t i m e r mo de will be automatically canceled. While pressing t h e self-timer button press the sh ut t er release button fully t o activate th e s e lf-timer. The s hut ter w ill be released 1 2 seconds la ter * Be sure t h e subject i s in t h e autofocus frame.
Press t h e flash mo de button until " AUTO-S" appears on th e LC D panel. Compose y ou r shot and press t he s hu t t er release button — the flash will emit a rapid series of pre flashes, followed directly by the main flash. Hold t h e camera firmly while pressing the shutter release button.
Flash OFF mode T hi s m od e i s to b e u s ed i n s i t u a t i o n s where a flash is prohibited (as in museums) or wh e n n ot desired (f or special effects). Press t h e f l as h mode button until " OFF" appears on th e LCD panel. *In l ow lighting condition, the shutter speed m a y b e slow.
FILL-IN flash m od e The flash always activates i n this mode. I t can b e engaged fo r daylight synchro photography or when shooting backlighted subjects. Press t h e shutter release button fully t o ta ke the picture. *T o cancel flash OF F mode pre ss t he flash m od e button again or close t he lens barrier.
Press t he shutter release button fully to ta ke the p icture. *T o cancel Fill-in flash mode, press th e flash mode button again o r close t h e le ns barrier. Press t h e flash m ode button until " FILL-IN" appears on t he LCD panel. *By using the f las h FILL-IN mode, t h e subject will be properly l it by the flash.

Troubleshooting Q : Will th e camera operate without film? A : Eve n if there is no film in the camera, if t h e lens barrier is open, t he shutter wil l re l ea se .
Q : The pictures aren't sharp. What's wrong? A: I n t h e fo llo wing examples, t h e camera's autofocus mechanism may not function properly.
Care a n d storage * Do not expose th e camera to extreme heat (over 4 0°C or 104°F) or to extreme c o l d (below -10°C o r 14°F). *Avoid sudden temperature change. *Do n o t expose t h e camera to strong magnetic fields. * D o no t apply excess force to t h e camera or its controls.
