NVIDIA Corporation 1 C HAPTER A BOUT NVIDIA RAID NVIDIA brings Redundant Array of Indepe ndent Disks (RAID) technology—which is used by the world’s leading businesses—t o the common PC desktop. This technology uses mul tiple driv es to eith er increase to tal disk space or to offer data protecti on.
NVIDIA Corporation 3 C HAPTER 1 About NVIDIA RAID RAID Arr ays This section d escribes the foll owing types of RAID arrays that MediaShield supports: • RAID 0 RAID 0 defines a di sk striping scheme that im proves the disk read and write times for many applications.
4 MediaShield User’s Guide – Version 3.1 C HAPTER 1 About NVIDIA RAID RAID 0 How RAID 0 W orks In a RAID 0 array, the controller ʺ stripes ʺ data across multiple d rives in the RAID subsystem. RA ID 0 breaks u p a large file into smaller blocks and then performs disk reads and writes across mul tiple drives in parallel.
NVIDIA Corporation 5 C HAPTER 1 About NVIDIA RAID RAID 1 How RAID 1 W orks In a RAID 1 array, every read and write is ca rried out in para llel acro ss two disk dr ives. The mirrored—or backup—copy of the d ata ca n reside on the same disk or on a second redundant drive in the array.
6 MediaShield User’s Guide – Version 3.1 C HAPTER 1 About NVIDIA RAID RAID 0+1 How RAID 0+1 W orks RAID 0 drives can be mirrored using RA ID 1 techniques, resulting in a RAID 0+ 1 solution for improved performance plus resiliency.
NVIDIA Corporation 7 C HAPTER 1 About NVIDIA RAID RAID 5 How RAID 5 W orks RAID 5 stripes both data and parity informati on across three or more drives.
8 MediaShield User’s Guide – Version 3.1 C HAPTER 1 About NVIDIA RAID JBOD How JBOD W orks JB O D s ta n d s f o r “ Ju s t a Bu n c h o f D i sk s ”. E ac h d r iv e is a cc es s ed a s i f it we r e o n a s t an d ar d SCSI host bus adapter.
