Norton™ PartitionMagic® is a utility that lets you quickly and easily create, delete, merge, or convert file systems of partitio ns on your hard disk without d estroying existing data. Chapter 2: PartitionMagic Basics 14 Partition Magic Main Window The main window includes an action panel with shortcuts for comm on tasks and an overview of pending operations, a map of each disk, and a list of the partitions on the selected disk. The menu bar and a toolb ar appear at the top of t he window.

It uses 32-bit file allocation table entries, rather than the 16-bit entries used by the FAT system, so FAT32 suppor ts larger disk or par tition sizes (up to 2 terabytes).

Chapter 3: Managing Partitions 28 Integrity Checks PartitionMagic checks disk integrity wi th a sophisti cated system of analysi s and validatio n that operates behind the scenes every time you start the program or complete an operation.
Norton Par titionMagic 29 2 Click Partition ➤ Brow se . 3 Right-click to cop y , mov e, rename, or d elete fi les, and create, cop y , mo ve, o r delete folders as yo u wish. 4 Click Close to exit the File Bro wser and return to PartitionMagic. The PartitionMagic main screen will be refresh ed to reflect any changes you made.
Chapter 3: Managing Partitions 30 The Resize/Move Partition d ialog appears. The current si ze of the partition is shown on a disk map at th e top of the dialog. The map also depi cts the used and un used space within the partition and the unallocated space surrounding the partition (if any exists).
Norton Par titionMagic 31 If you k now your disk has n o bad sectors, Skip bad sector checks in Preferences to make resize and move operations faster. PartitionMagic ch anges the Free Space Before , New Size , and Free Space After values to show how the partition size is affected.
Chapter 3: Managing Partitions 32 4 (Optio nal) Click the Cluster Size drop- down list an d select a ne w size or use t he recommend cluster si ze that is already selected. This option is only available for FAT and FAT32 parti tions. For more information, see “Resiz ing Clust ers” on page 66.

Norton Par titionMagic 35 The Create Partition dialog appears. 3 From the Create as drop-down list, select Logical Partition or P rimary Part ition . As a general rule, you should creat e primary partitions to instal l operating systems and logical partitions for all other purpos es (such as storing data and applications ).
Chapter 3: Managing Partitions 36 If you create a second, third, or fourth primary partition on a physical disk , PartitionMagic will create the new primary part ition as unhidden. However, PartitionMagic will automatically hide the other primary partitions on that disk when performi ng a Set Active operation.
Norton Par titionMagic 37 7 If the size y ou specified for t he new partition is s maller than th e av ailable unallo cated space, you can position the partition at the beginning (recommended ) or end of the unallocated space. In the Posit ion box, click Be ginning o f free space or E nd of free space .
Chapter 3: Managing Partitions 38 Creating Bootable Partitio ns Before creating a partition wher e you plan to install an operating sy stem (a bootable parti tion), you should underst and the fo llowing inf ormation. * Windows NT/2000/XP must boot from a primary partition on the first drive.

When you create, move, or resize a bootable partition, the partition must begin below the bo ot code bound ary specified in th e above table for the operating system to boot. With the exception of DOS 6.22 (or earlier), partitions beyond 8 GB are visi ble to the current operating system.

Chapter 3: Managing Partitions 44 3 Create a second logical partition in the unallocated space using the following information: Partition Type: Select L inu x Swap . Size: Type 256 . (The swap par tition is typically twice t he amount of RA M.) 4 Apply the changes to your s ystem.

Chapter 3: Managing Partitions 46 The Undelete dialog appears , and the selected unallocated space is searched. All primary and logical partitio ns that can be undeleted are displayed in the scrollable list.
Norton Par titionMagic 47 • If two deleted partitions claim some of the same disk space, Norton cannot guarantee the integrity of the data in those partitions when they are unde leted. For example, suppos e you had two pa rtitions , a 500 MB E: and a 500 MB F: and yo u deleted F: and resized E: to claim all the space (1 GB).
Chapter 3: Managing Partitions 48 Formatting Par titions The Format operation formats a partitio n, destroying all its data in the process . Formatting enables you to put a different file system on a partition.
Norton Par titionMagic 49 • To qu ickly move a s maller hard disk’s contents to a larger, new h ard disk. • To change the relative order of partitions. • To back up a partition. 1 Select the partition you want to copy . The Copy comman d is dimmed if there is not enough unallocated space on your disks for the partition .
Chapter 3: Managing Partitions 50 The copy is the same s ize (or slightly dif ferent if copied to a disk with a dif ferent geometry ) and file s ystem type and cont ains the same data as the original. You can also select a p artition on the disk map and drag it to un allocated space, then choose Copy Here or Move Here from t he drag-and-d rop menu.
Norton Par titionMagic 51 If a Check for Errors operation fails, “Check F ailed” appears in the Used and Unused columns in the partition li st. Y ou should fix an y errors encountered. For more information, s ee “Resolving Check Errors” on page 113.
Chapter 3: Managing Partitions 52 Merging Par tition s You can merge two FAT, FAT32, or NTFS partitions that are adjacent to each other on a disk. You can merge FAT and FAT32 partitions with each other, and you can merge an NTFS partition with ano ther NTFS partition.
Norton Par titionMagic 53 The Merge Adjacent Partitions dialog appears. 4 In the Merge opt ions group box, cl ick the p artitions you w ould lik e to mer ge. The contents of one partition will be moved into a folder within the other partiti on. Do not merge partitions th at contain operating systems.
Chapter 3: Managing Partitions 54 Splitting Par titions Use Split to divide a FAT or FAT32 partition in to two contiguous partitions. It may be useful to split a partition if you have a large set of data or a mixture of data and applications within one par tition.
Norton Par titionMagic 55 If Split is di mmed (unavailable) on the me nu, it is m ost likely because you are tr ying to split a primary partition when you have already reached the maximum four primary partitions (such as three primary partiti ons and one extended partition) allo wed on a hard disk.
Chapter 3: Managing Partitions 56 the changes or Windo ws may not allow you to sp lit the partition. I f Windows allows you t o move a stand ard folder, you wil l need to redirect files to the new partition from within the applications that used the original partition.
Norton Par titionMagic 57 The Partition Properties dialog appears. Informati on is displ ayed in tab bed pages. To view a page, cl ick its asso ciat ed tab, which is always visible at the top of the pages. Based on the file system the partitio n uses, differen t pages appear.

Norton Par titionMagic 59 1 Select the disk you w ant to scan for errors. ScanDisk only scans p artitions with assig ned drive letters; it does no t scan hidden partitions, extended partitions, unallocated space, or partitions with file systems not supported by the active operating sys tem.

Chapter 4: Completing Adv anced Disk Operations 62 Changing a Drive Letter The Change Drive Letter operation lets you change the drive letter assig ned to any parti tion visi ble to an d supported b y Windows N T/2000 /XP. If you are run ning Win dows 9x or Wi ndows Me, thi s operati on is not avai lable.

Chapter 5: Conve rting Partitions 76 Conver ting Part itions to Logical o r Primary You might want to convert a primary partition to a logical partition if you have reached the limit of primary partitions on your hard disk . If you create a logical partition, PartitionMagic will automatically place it in an extended partition.

Chapter 6: Usin g Wizards 80 Over view PartitionMagic includes sev e n wizards for common tasks. The wizards provide an alternativ e to performing the tasks m anually using the comman ds on the Part ition menu . You do not have access to the wizards if you run PartitionMagic from the rescue disk s.
