GB - 8 • Return steering levers to neutral position. • Immediately set parking brake. • T urn off PTO and engine. Mow up and down slopes, not across them. Use slow speed on any slope. T ires m ay lose traction on slopes even though the brakes are functioning properly .
GB - 9 A frozen battery can explode and result in death or serious injury . DO NOT charge or jump start a battery containing frozen fluid. Thaw the battery before putting on a charger or jump starting. AL WA YS keep prote ctive structures, guards, and panels in good repair , in place and securely fastened.

GB - 12 CONTROLS AND FEA TURES See figure 4 for all controls and features locations. Safety Interloc k System Perform the following tests to ensure the safety interlock system is working properly . If the unit doe s not perform as s tated contact your Ariens dealer for rep airs.
GB - 13 Power T ake- O ff (PTO) Switch Engages (2) and disengages (1) mower blades. S teering Levers • Reverse (1) – Pull bot h steering levers backward. • Forward (2) – Push both steering levers forward. • Left (3) – Pull lef t steering lever back or push right steering lever forward or a combination of both.
GB - 14 Fuel S tabi lizer Gasoline left in the fuel sy stem for extended periods without a stabilizer w ill deteriorate, resulting in gum deposits in the system.
GB - 15 FOR BEST PERFORMA NCE Cut grass when it is dry . Keep mow er blades sharp. Keep mower deck properly leveled. Do not set height of cut too low . For very tall grass, mow twice. Do not travel too f ast. Mow with the engine set at f ull throttl e .
GB - 16 IMPORT ANT : Proper m aintenance can prolong the life of unit. The following chart shows the recommended service sched ule. Refer to the maintenance instructions in the Engine Manual for additional information.
GB - 17 TIPPING SEA T FORW ARD Put steering levers up and tip seat forward (figure 6). SEA T ADJUSTMENT 1. T ip the seat forward. 2. Loosen mounting hardware and slide seat forward or backward to desired position. T ighten mounting hardware (figure 6) .
GB - 18 MOWER DECK REM OV AL AND INST ALLA TION Remove (Figure 7) 1. R emove PTO belt from the engine drive pulley (see REPLAC ING PTO BEL T on page 23). NOTE: Perform step 2 and 3 for the right and left side of unit. 2. D isconnect drag link from the front deck bracket.
GB - 19 The Forwa rd Pitch Of The Mower Blades (Figure 9) • Should be 0.0 in. (0.0 mm) to 1/4 i n . (6.35 mm) pitched forward. NOTE: This measurem ent must be t aken when the mower blades ends point forward. The Pitch Of The Mower Blade s From Side-T o-Side (Figure 10) • Should be within 1/4 in.
GB - 20 SHARPENING M OWER BLADE 1. Remove mower blade from unit (see REPLA CING M OWER BL ADE on page 19). Ariens recommends having mower blades sharpened by a professional. Contact your Ariens dealer . Discard mower blade if (figure 13): • more than 1/2 in.
GB - 21 Inst all (Figure 14) 1. Install battery on the unit with battery hold-down bracket . 2. C onnect positive (+) cable first, then negative (–) cable. 3. Apply petroleum jelly or dielectric grease to battery cable ends and terminals. 4. Tip seat back (see TIPPING S E A T FORW ARD on page 17).
GB - 22 ADJUSTING STEE RING LEVERS (Figure 15) IMPORT ANT : Adjust each steering lever equally . NOTE: When adjusting steering levers for the first time it is recommended that you make adjustments in the fol l owing order . 1. Adjust S teering Lever He ight 1.
GB - 23 REPLACING PTO BEL T Remove (Figure 18) 1. Lo wer mower deck to the ground. 2. Remove belt cov ers from mower deck. 3. Pull idler arm towards out s ide of unit until tension is removed from PTO belt. 4. R emove PTO belt from left mower deck pulley .
GB - 24 3. Slowly release idler arm until idler pulley rests firmly against PTO belt. 4. Install belt covers on mower deck. NOTE: Ensure that belt is still positioned in the groove of th e sheave after belt covers are installed. REPLACING HYDROS T A TIC BEL T Remove (Figure 20) 1.
GB - 25 TROUBLESHOOTING PROBLEM PROB ABLE CAUSE CORRECTION Engine will not crank/start. 1. S afety interlo ck system is not engaged or is faulty. 1. Check safety interlock sy stem (see Safety Interlock Syst em on page 12). 2. Fuel tank is empty. 2. Fill fuel tank (see FI LLING FUEL T ANK on page 13).
