GB - 5 SAFETY RULES If unit is to be used by someon e other than original purchaser; loaned, r ented or sold, AL WA YS provide this manual and any needed safety training before operation. Learn applicable rules and laws in your area, including those that m ay restrict the age of the operator .
GB - 6 NEVER attempt to make any adjustments to unit while engine i s running (except where specifically recommended). S top engine, remove key (electric start models) and wait for all moving parts to stop before s ervicing. DO NOT make cutting height wheel adjustments while the engine i s running.
GB - 7 AL WA YS drain fuel outdoors away from ignition sources. AL WA YS shut off engine, and remove key , and close fuel shutoff valve when transporting unit on a t ruck or trailer . Avoid Electric Shock. DO NOT disconnect wire from spark plug while e ngine is running.
GB - 8 CARTON CONTE NTS ASSEMB L Y 1. Unfold and adjust handlebar . See HANDLEBAR HEIGHT on page 18 . NOTE: DO NOT bend the speed control rod (if equipped) when unf olding the handlebars. 2. F ill engine crankcase with oil. See engine manual. 3. Set -up mowe r for bagging, side discharge or m ulching.

GB - 10 CONTROLS AND FEA TURES See Figure 4 for locations. Engine/Blade Control The engine/blade control must be held against the handlebar to start the engine and blade. Engine/blade control feature on mower stops engine and blade within 3 secon ds whenever operator releases handlebar .
GB - 11 Swivel W heel Models (91 1 134, 164, 165) T o change front wheel cutting height , insert height adjuster pin into t he holes that match the desired cutting height and fasten with key ring (Figure 6). T o change rear wheel cutting height, move cutting height levers one notch at a t ime to set the desired c utting height.
GB - 12 S tart mowing slowly and use speed control rod to gradually increase speed to a safe, comfortable walking pace. S peed control rod should hold the desired speed. If not, adjust s peed control bell crank. (See SPEED CO NTROL BEL L CRANK (s elf- propelled models) on page 20.
GB - 13 MOWER SET -UP To B a g 1. Shut of f unit. 2. Install side discharge co ver . 3. Lift rear door . 4. Hook grass bag frame on mounting flange. 5. Lower rear doo r . If necessary , lift rear of grass bag frame to lock in position. There should be no openings between bag and mounting surface after i nstalling bag.
GB - 14 EMERG ENCY STOPPIN G T o stop the m ower in an emerge ncy: 1. Release the engine/blade control. 2. Release the wheel drive control (self- propelled models). 3. Allow all moving part s to stop before leaving operator ’s position. ST ARTING AND SHUT OFF See Figure 4 for all Controls and Features.
GB - 15 Ariens Dealers will provide any service, parts or adjustments which may be required to keep your unit operating at peak ef ficiency . Should engine require se rvice, contact an Ariens Dealer or an authorized engine manufacturer's service center .
GB - 16 CHECK GRASS BAG Check grass bag frequently for wear or deterioration. Replace worn or damaged bag with Ariens original equ ipment replacement bag only . CLEAN UNIT Before each use clean unit, muffler and engine surfaces of debris, oil or fuel spills to ensure proper cooling and prevent fires.
GB - 17 3. Check mower blade balance. Slide mower blade on an unthreaded bolt. A balanced blade should remain in a horizontal position. If eit her end of mower blade moves downward, sharpen the heavy end until blade is balanced (Figure 12). 4. Install mower blade on unit.
GB - 18 SER VICE PO SITION Put unit into se rvice position for eas y access to underneath the deck. 1. Place unit on a flat, level surface. 2. Disconnect spark plug w ire. 3. Remove fuel cap, place a piece of plastic bag over the opening and tighten cap securely .
GB - 19 WHEEL DRIVE CONTROL ADJUSTMENT (SELF-PROPELLED MODELS) See Figure 16. NOTE: When the whee l drive control is disengaged, the gap between the friction disc and the aluminum drive plate should be approximately .030" (0.7mm). See Figure 16. Check the adjustment with the engine off and with the engine on: 1.
GB - 20 2. Check the adjustment and readjust as needed. NOTE: If the gap bet ween the friction disc and aluminum drive plate cannot be adjusted to this tolerance, t ake the unit to an authorized service dealer for repairs.
GB - 21 IMPORT ANT : NEVER spray unit with high- pressure wa ter or store unit outdoors. S tore mower in a coo l, dry , protected location. Cleaning Clean unit thoroughly with mild soap and low pressure water . Brush off dirt and debris from all surfaces.
GB - 22 Mower does not bag clippings 1. G rass bag is overfilled. 2. M ulching plug is installed. 1. E mpty g rass bag and do not allow it to overfill. 2. Rem ove mulching plug. Wheel drive does not engage (Sel f- Propelled models) 1. W heel drive control not engaged.
