4 - 22 4.2 SERVICE POSITIONS Place unit on a flat l evel sur face. AL W A YS stop engine . Assure unit is sec ure and will not tip o ver . S trap and clamp onto bench if nee ded. A handl ebar se rvice pos ition is provided for tippi ng the unit for cleani ng and ser vice (Fi gure 3).
4 - 23 4.5 CHECK MO WER BLADE See Figures 5 and 6. Regularly check mow er blades f or wear and that lock washer is fully compressed b y cap scre w (requires 25-30 ft-lbs (33-40 Nm) of torque on cap screw). When blade needs sharpening: 1. Bloc k blade to pre vent rotation.
4 - 24 T o check (Figur e 7): 1. Start eng ine and slowl y releas e control until engine stops firi ng. 2. Measur e distance between han dlebar a nd control at the po int that engine stopp ed firin g.

4 - 26 4.12 FRICTION WHEEL ADJUSTMENT Early Models (Side Pull) Adjus t rear cutting height le vers to mi ddle posi tion. Check to be sure th ere is sla ck in the fri ction whee l drive c able, if no t readjust cable nuts . Set spe ed selec tor at s lowest sp eed and loosen t he two cap screws on drive moun t.
5 - 27 5.1 ENGINE T ROUBLESHOOTING The follo wing trou bleshoot ing chart i s to be used t o isola te engine p roblems and give po ssible causes and correc tive action responses . The troubles hooting key is generic and can be used for sever al types of e ngines.

5 - 29 5.3 ENG INE OIL IMPORT ANT : Change engine c rankcase oil after fi rst two (2) hours of op eration. Th ereafter , change oil every twenty f ive hours of oper ation (mor e often in dusty di rty condit ions). Refer to Engin e Manual f or oil type and grade a nd detailed i nstructio ns.

5 - 31 5.5 ENGINE COOLI NG The engin e is air c ooled. Air must circul ate freely around engine an d over cool ing fins on cylinder head and blo ck to prev ent overheat ing.
6 - 32 6.1 BLADE BRAKE/CLUTCH REMOVAL Remove mo wer blade. Squee ze brake/c lutch ba il again st handle bar and i nsert cotter p in into open h ole of ac tuating rod. Remove 3/ 8-24x2-1/2 " cap screw t hat retai ns brake, blade, c lutch (BBC ) leaf spring and leaf s pring fro m shaft.
6 - 33 6.2 DRIVE BELT REPLACEM ENT NOTE: On BBC m odel b lade brake/ clutch a ssembly must be removed to change bel t. Place right rear a djustment lever in fi rst notch and left rear hei ght adjus tment lever in third no tch. This provides clearanc e between f riction whe el and driv e disk .
