Occupant safety 54 G Warning! Never let more people ride in the vehicle than there are seat belts available. Make sure everyone riding in the vehicle is cor- rectly restrained with a separate seat belt. Never use a seat belt for more than one person at a time.
Occupant safety 55 R Make sure the seat belt is always fitted snugly. Take special care of this when wearing loose clothing. R Never use a seat belt for more than one person at a time. Do not fasten a seat belt around a person and another person or other objects at the same time.
Occupant safety 56 the size and weight of the child. For addi- tional information, see section “Children in the vehicle”. A child’s risk of serious or fatal injuries is significantly increased if the child restraints are not properly secured in the vehicle and/or the child is not properly secured in the child restraint.
Occupant safety 57 to remind you and your passenger to fasten your seat belts. If the driver’s seat belt is not fastened when the engine is started, an additional warning chime will also sound for a maximum of 6 sec- onds or until the driver’s seat belt is fastened.
Occupant safety 58 Correct driver seat adjustment G Warning! In order to avoid possible loss of vehicle control all seat, head restraint, steering wheel, and rear view mirror adjustments, as well as fastening of seat belts, must be done before the vehicle is put into motion.
Occupant safety 59 G Observe Safety notes, see page 53. Make sure: R Seat belt 2 is always fitted snugly. R Adjust seat belt 2 so that the shoulder section is located as close as possible to the middle of the shoulder. R Place the lap portion of seat belt 2 as low as possible on your hips.

X Press and hold button 2 until the roll bar is lowered. i If you have raised the roll bar manually using the button, the roll bar will automat- ically be lowered and then raised again when you close and open the retractable hardtop.
Occupant safety 61 The passenger lap-shoulder belt has a special seat belt retractor for secure fastening of child restraints. To fasten a child restraint, follow child restraint instructions for mounting. Then pull the shoulder belt out completely and let it retract.
Panic alarm 62 please check installation. Periodically check the 5/ indicator lamp while driving to make sure the 5/ indicator lamp is illuminated. If the 5/ indicator lamp goes out or remains out, do not transport a child on the passenger seat until the system has been repaired.
Driving safety systems 63 i Canada only: This device complies with RSS-210 of Industry Canada. Operation is subject to the following two conditions: 1. This device may not cause interference, and 2. this device must accept any interfer- ence received, including interference that may cause undesired operation of the device.
Driving safety systems 64 ABS G Observe Safety notes, see page 63. G Warning! Do not pump the brake pedal. Use firm, steady brake pedal pressure instead. Pumping the brake pedal defeats the pur- pose of the ABS and significantly reduces braking effectiveness.
Driving safety systems 65 maneuver. Therefore, the braking distance may increase. ESP ® G Observe Safety notes, see page 63. The Electronic Stability Program (ESP ® ) is operational as soon as the engine is running and monitors the vehicle’s traction (force of adhesive friction between the tires and the road surface) and handling.
Driving safety systems 66 Switching the ESP ® off or on (except SL 63 AMG) G Warning! The ESP ® should not be switched off during normal driving other than in the circum- stances described below. Disabling the sys- tem will reduce vehicle stability in driving maneuvers.
Driving safety systems 67 ! Avoid spinning of a drive wheel for an extended period with the ESP ® switched off. This may cause serious damage to the drivetrain which is not covered by the Mer- cedes-Benz Limited Warranty. X Switching on: Press ESP ® switch 1 until the ABS/ESP ® warning lamp v in the instrument cluster goes out.
Driving safety systems 68 1 ESP ® SPORT switch X Switching on: With the engine running, press ESP ® SPORT switch 1 briefly. The ABS/ESP ® warning lamp v in the instrument cluster comes on. The message ESP-SPORT appears in the multifunction display.
Driving safety systems 69 R you cannot activate the cruise control or the Distronic system R the cruise control or the Distronic system switch off if activated i When the ESP ® is switched off and one or more drive wheels are spinning, the ABS/ ESP ® warning lamp v in the instrument cluster does not flash.
Driving safety systems 70 red brake warning lamp comes on and warning messages appear in the multifunc- tion display while driving. To brake, the driver must then apply significantly greater brake pedal pressure and depress the pedal much further to obtain the expected brak- ing effect.
Anti-theft systems 71 The electro-hydraulic brake system switches off automatically R approximately 2 minutes after you turned the SmartKey in the starter switch to posi- tion 0 or removed the SmartKe.
Anti-theft systems 72 i If the alarm stays on for more than 30 sec- onds, a call to the Response Center is ini- tiated automatically by the Tele Aid system provided that you have subscribed to the Tele Aid service and that it has been acti- vated properly, and that the necessary mobile phone, power supply and GPS cov- erage are available.
Anti-theft systems 73 Disabling tow-away alarm To prevent triggering the tow-away alarm, dis- able the tow-away alarm feature before tow- ing the vehicle, or when parking on a surface subject to movement, such as a ferry or auto train. 1 Tow-away alarm off switch 2 Indicator lamp X Switch off the ignition.

Locking and unlocking 78 KEYLESS-GO Vehicles equipped with KEYLESS-GO come with two SmartKeys with KEYLESS-GO, each with remote control and a removable mechanical key. The KEYLESS-GO function is integrated into the SmartKey. On these vehicles, the validity of the SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO is checked every time you grasp an outside door handle.
Locking and unlocking 79 R If the SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO is posi- tioned farther away from the vehicle, the system may no longer recognize the Smart- Key with KEYLESS-GO. The vehicle cannot be locked or the engine started via the KEY- LESS-GO system.
Locking and unlocking 80 imately 5 seconds until battery check lamp 4 ( Y page 77) flashes twice. The SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO will then function as follows: X Unlocking driver’s door and fuel filler flap: Grasp the driver’s outside door han- dle.
Locking and unlocking 81 Opening a door causes its window to open slightly. It will fully close when the door is shut. ! A side window will not work if it is blocked with ice or if the vehicle battery is dis- charged. If you cannot shut a door, do not force it or you could damage the door or side window.
Locking and unlocking 82 Opening the trunk G Warning! Make sure the trunk is closed when the engine is running and while driving. Among other dangers, deadly carbon monoxide (CO) gases may enter vehicle interior resulting in unconsciousness and death.
Locking and unlocking 83 Opening the trunk from the inside Vehicles without trunk opening/closing system 1 Remote trunk opening switch 2 Indicator lamp X Pull switch 1 until the trunk unlocks and opens slightly. Indicator lamp 2 comes on and remains lit until the trunk is closed.
Locking and unlocking 84 with KEYLESS-GO is recognized inside the vehicle or in the trunk. The vehicle is only locked when the turn signal lamps flash three times and an acoustic signal sounds three times. If you are carrying a sec- ond SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO with you, you can still lock the vehicle.
Locking and unlocking 85 To interrupt the closing procedure: X Release switch 1 . Closing the trunk from the outside auto- matically G Warning! Monitor the closing procedure carefully to make sure no one is in danger of being injured.
Locking and unlocking 86 1 KEYLESS-GO locking/closing switch X Make sure you have the SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO with you. X Press switch 1 briefly. With all doors closed: R The locking knobs in the doors move down. R The trunk lid starts to close automati- cally.
Starter switch positions 87 X Insert the mechanical key in the trunk lid lock. X Turn the mechanical key clockwise to posi- tion % and remove the mechanical key in that position to lock the trunk. The trunk remains locked even when the vehi- cle is centrally unlocked.
Starter switch positions 88 checked and replaced if necessary. If a lamp in the instrument cluster remains on after starting the engine or comes on while driving, refer to “Lamps in instrument clus- ter” ( Y page 293). ! If the SmartKey cannot be turned in the starter switch, the vehicle battery may not be sufficiently charged.
Seats 89 i If you now press the KEYLESS-GO start/ stop button R once more, the ignition (position 2 ) is switched on R twice more the power supply is again switched off Ignition (or position 2) X Press the KEYLESS-GO start/stop button twice. This supplies power for all electrical con- sumers.
Seats 90 unlocked vehicle. A child’s unsupervised access to a vehicle could result in an acci- dent and/or serious personal injury. G Warning! Children 12 years old and under must be seated and properly secured in an appro- priately sized infant restraint, toddler restraint, or booster seat recommended for the size and weight of the child.
Seats 91 of the head restraint supports the back of the head at eye level. This will reduce the potential for injury to the head and neck in the event of an accident or similar situation. Do not drive the vehicle without the seat head restraints. Head restraints are intended to help reduce injuries during an accident.
Seats 92 Multicontour seat The multicontour seat backrest has inflatable air cushions built into the seat backrest to provide additional lumbar and side support.
Seats 93 If one or more of the indicator lamps in the seat ventilation switch 1 are flashing, there is insufficient voltage available since too many electrical consumers are turned on. The seat ventilation switches off automatically. The seat ventilation will switch back on again automatically as soon as sufficient voltage is available.
Seats 94 X Switch on the ignition. X Switching on seat heating: Press switch 1 . Both red indicator lamps in switch 1 come on. X Switching off seat heating: Press switch 1 repeatedly until all red indicator lamps go out.
Multifunction steering wheel 95 Multifunction steering wheel Safety notes G Warning! Do not adjust the steering wheel while driv- ing. Adjusting the steering wheel while driv- ing could cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The electrical steering wheel adjustment feature can be operated at any time.
Mirrors 96 you insert the SmartKey into the starter switch or press the KEYLESS-GO start/stop button once with the driver’s door closed. i The last set steering wheel position is stored when the ignition is switched off or the position is stored in memory ( Y page 98).
Memory function 97 1 Driver’s side exterior rear view mirror but- ton 2 Passenger-side exterior rear view mirror button 3 Adjustment button X Switch on the ignition. X Press button 1 for the driver’s side exte- rior rear view mirror or button 2 for the passenger-side exterior rear view mirror.
Lighting 98 1 Memory position button 2 Memory button M Storing positions into memory X Adjust the seats, on the driver’s side also the steering wheel and exterior rear view mirrors, to the desired positions. X Press memory button M . X Release memory button M and press mem- ory position button 1 , 2 or 3 within 3 sec- onds.
Lighting 99 Exterior lamp switch $ a Standing lamps, left % g Standing lamps, right & M Off Daytime running lamp mode ( U Automatic headlamp mode Daytime running lamp mode ) C Parking lamps (also tail lamps, license plate lamps, side marker lamps and instrument panel lamps) * B Low-beam headlamps or high-beam headlamps , ¥ Front fog lamps .
Lighting 100 and/or ambient lighting conditions require you to do so. In low ambient lighting conditions, only switch from position U to B with the vehicle at a standstill in a safe location. Switching from U to B will briefly switch off the headlamps.
Lighting 101 When the engine is running, and you turn the exterior lamp switch to position C or B , the manual headlamp mode has prior- ity over the daytime running lamp mode. The corresponding exterior lamps come on ( Y page 99). Fog lamps Fog lamps cannot be switched on with the exterior lamp switch in position U .
Lighting 102 High-beam flasher X Switching on: Pull the combination switch briefly in direction of arrow 2 . Turn signals 1 Turn signals, right 2 Turn signals, left X Press the combination switch in direction of arrow 1 or 2 . The corresponding turn signal indicator lamp L or K in the instrument clus- ter flashes.
Lighting 103 Headlamp cleaning system 1 Headlamp cleaning button X Switch on the ignition. X Press button 1 . The headlamps are cleaned with a high- pressure water jet.
Lighting 104 Switching off X Switch off the left or right turn signal. or X Steer straight ahead. The corner-illuminating lamp goes out. i There may be a brief delay before the cor- ner-illuminating lamps go out. Interior lighting The interior lighting controls are located in the overhead control panel.
Wipers 105 Wipers Notes ! Do not operate the wipers when the wind- shield is dry. Dust that accumulates on a windshield might scratch the glass and/or damage the wiper blades when wiping occurs on a dry windshield. If it is necessary to operate the wipers in dry weather con- ditions, always operate the wipers with washer fluid.
Wipers 106 Single wipe X Press the combination switch briefly in direction of arrow 2 to the resistance point. The windshield wipers wipe one time with- out washer fluid. Wiping with washer fluid X Press the combination switch in direction of arrow 2 past the resistance point.
Power windows 107 Power windows Opening and closing The windows are opened and closed electri- cally. The switches for all windows are located on the driver’s door. The switch for operating the passenger-side windows is located on the passenger door.
Power windows 108 X Express operation: Press or pull switch 1 or 2 past the resistance point and release. The corresponding door window opens or closes completely.
Driving and parking 109 X Pull and hold the respective switch once more immediately until the window is com- pletely closed. X Hold the respective switch for approxi- mately 1 second.
