Tires and wheels 272 Uniform Tire Quality Grading Standards The Uniform Tire Quality Grading is a U.S. Government requirement designed to give drivers consistent and reliable information regarding tire performance. Tire manufacturers are required to grade tires based on three performance factors: treadwear, traction, and temperature resistance.
Tires and wheels 273 Mercedes-Benz recommends winter tires ( Y page 277) with a minimum tread depth of approximately 1 / 6 in (4 mm) on all four wheels for the winter season to ensure normal balanced handling characteristics. On packed snow, they can reduce your stopping distance compared to summer tires.
Tires and wheels 274 Aspect ratio Dimensional relationship between tire section height and section width expressed in percentage. Bar Another metric unit for air pressure. There are 14.5038 pounds per square inch (psi) to 1 bar; there are 100 kilopascals (kPa) to 1 bar.
Tires and wheels 275 Maximum permissible tire inflation pressure This number is the greatest amount of air pressure that should ever be put in the tire. Normal occupant weight The number of occupants the vehicle is designed to seat, multiplied by 68 kilograms (150 lb).
Tires and wheels 276 Traction Force exerted by the vehicle on the road via the tires. The amount of grip provided. Tread The portion of a tire that comes into contact with the road. Treadwear indicators Narrow bands, sometimes called “wear bars” that show across the tread of a tire when only 1 / 16 in (1.
Winter driving 277 Winter driving General information Have your vehicle winterized at an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center. Winter tires G Warning! Winter tires with a tread depth of less than 1 / 6 in (4 mm) must be replaced. They are no longer suitable for winter operation.
