6 Intr oduction W elcome! This Digital Video Disc Pla yer will allow y ou to enjoy better picture quality , clearer sound, and endless pla yback features on Digital Video Discs (D VDs).
Play able Discs 7 Region Codes and Color Systems D VDs must meet the requir ements for Region Codes and Color Systems before y ou can use them with the D VD Pla yer . D VDs must be labeled for ALL r egions or for Region 1 in order to pla y on this D VD Play er .
8 Gener al Information Batter y Installation 1 Remo ve the battery compar tment lid on the rear of the r emote contr ol by pressing in the tab, then lifting off the lid. 2 Place two AA batteries inside the battery compar tment with their + and – ends aligned as indicated.
Hookups 9 Determining the best possible connection... The capabilities of y our existing equipment, especially y our TV , will determine your connection possibilities. How ever , the follo wing guidelines describe which options provide the best pictur e and sound quality .
Before you begin, make sure you have an RF modulator and e xtra RF coaxial cables. These are not supplied with the Player , but are available fr om Magnavo x or most consumer electronics r etailer s. 1 Connect the supplied video cable (which has yello w markings) to the Play er’ s yello w VIDEO jack.
Hookups (cont’ d) 11 Connecting to a TV Only TV has a yello w Video In jack 1 Connect the yello w VIDEO jack of the DVD Pla yer to the corr esponding VIDEO IN jack on your TV .
1 Connect an S-Video cable (not supplied) to the S-VIDEO jack of the D VD Pla yer and to the TV’ s S-VIDEO In jack. 2 Connect the supplied audio cable to the white and red Audio L/R (left and right) jacks on the D VD Pla yer and to the left/right AUDIO IN jacks on the TV .
Hookups (cont’ d) 13 Connecting to a TV Only TV has Component Video In J acks (red, green, and blue) 1 Connect the D VD Pla yer’ s Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr jacks to the corr esponding Component Video In jacks on your TV . On y our TV , y ou ma y ha ve Component Video In jacks that are label Pr ogressiv e Scan.
14 Hookups (cont’ d) Connecting to a TV and a Receiver with and without Dolb y Pr o Logic decoding 1 Connect the supplied video cable to the yello w Video jack of the D VD Pla yer and to the TV’ s Video In jack. The supplied video cable has yello w markings.
Hookups (cont’ d) 15 Connecting to a TV and a Stereo (Stereo has Dolb y Digital TM or MPEG2) 1 Connect the Coaxial jack of the D VD Pla yer to the Coaxial Digital Audio In jack on your Ster eo. Use an appr opriate digital audio cable (not supplied).
16 Quick Disc Playback There ar e many pla yback features and options a vailable on Discs. After familiarising yourself with the D VD Pla yer as described on pag es 17-19, see pag es 20 and following to try additional pla yback featur es. 1 Press ST ANDBY -ON y y or PO WER y y to turn on the D VD Pla yer .
Remote Contr ol Buttons 17 NUMBER Buttons Press to select n umbered items in a menu. During playback, press the Number buttons to select a Chapter (within the curr ent Title) or T rack f or pla yback. Details are on page 20. RETURN/TITLE Button Press to g o back to a previous menu.
18 F ront P anel PA USE 8 button Press during pla yback to pause pla y . PLA Y 2 button Press to pla y a Disc. ST OP 7 button Press once to stop Disc pla yback. Pla y will resume from the same point the next time you start pla yback. Details are on page 16.
Rear P anel 19 Video jack Connect the supplied video cable (yello w) here and to the TV’ s Video In jack. Details ar e on page 11. Or , connect this jack to an RF modulator (not supplied) if your TV does not ha ve a Video In jack. Details ar e on page 10.
20 Title/Disc Men us , Chapter/T rack Selection Title/Disc menus 1 Press DISC MENU during D VD playback. The main Disc menu (or Root menu) will a ppear . The menu ma y list f eatur es available on the Disc. There menus vary among D VDs, and not all Discs ha ve the same features.
F ast F orward and F ast Rev erse 1 To fast forward a D VD or Video CD , press 2 r epeatedly to select two , four , eight, 16, or 32 times the normal speed. Sound will be mute. Or , pr ess 1 r epeatedly to pla y the D VD or Video CD backward at two , four , eight, 16, or 32 times the normal speed.
22 Still Picture/F r ame-b y-Fr ame Playback, Time Search Still Picture/F rame-by-F rame Pla yback 1 To pause a D VD or Video CD picture, press P AUSE 8 on the r emote contr ol during playback. 2 Press P A USE 8 r epeatedly to advance the still picture one frame at a time.
Zoom/Reduce , Camer a Angle 23 Zoom/Reduce Y ou can reduce or enlarge the video image during pla yback. 1 Press ZOOM r epeatedly during Disc pla yback to make the picture two , three, or four times larger . Or , k eep pressing ZOOM to reduce the picture to 1/2, 1/3, or 1/4 its normal size.
24 Repeat, Repeat A-B Repeat Y ou ma y play a Chapter , T rack, Title or entire Disc r epeatedly . 1 During Disc pla yback, press REPEA T to choose a Repeat option. Depending on the type of Disc, you ma y choose to play the Cha pter , T rack, Title , or Disc (ALL) r epeatedly .
D VD Audio Language 25 Some D VDs are r ecorded in multiple languages; some ma y hav e extra audio options such as a director’ s commentary or a music soundtrack. Y ou can choose the language or the soundtrack that you want to hear b y adjusting Audio in the Pref erence Page.
26 D VD Subtitle Language Some D VDs include subtitles. Choose the language you want for a vailable subtitles by adjusting Subtitle in the Pr eference Page. T o do so, follow the steps below . Or , the easiest wa y to choose subtitles is to press the SUBTITLE button on the remote r epeatedly during D VD playback.
D VD Disc Men u Language 27 D VDs hav e a Disc menu that allows y ou to choose options such as Audio Language, Subtitles, or other special features. Featur es var y among D VDs, so the menus ar e different for ev er y D VD . Some menus ma y be available in m ultiple languages.
28 P arental P asswor d The Parental f eature limits viewing of D VDs. Y ou need a password to change the Parental settings or to pla y Lock ed Discs. T o set your pass word, follo w the steps below . To adjust the Pa r ental level so D VDs cannot pla y if they exceed that lev el, see page 29.
Pa r ental Lev els 29 Y ou can set the Pla yer to block or allow pla yback according to the D VD movie rating. If someone tries to pla y a D VD whose rating exceeds the lev el you selected, P ARENT AL VIOLA TION ma y appear on the TV screen. Some D VDs ma y give you the option of entering y our password to allo w pla yback.
30 Pr ogr am (not for Picture CD/MP3) Y ou ma y play T racks or Chapters in an order you specify instead of normal order (1, 2, 3, etc.). The order you set is a Pr ogram. For example, if you want to set up an Audio CD so T rack 12 will pla y first, put T rack 12 in Program position n umber one (1).
Pre view 31 Some Video CDs or Super Video CDs ma y contain previe w or introductory information. If you ar e not sure of the contents of a Video CD or its T racks, use the Pre view features to see the content of the T racks. Not all Video CDs contain this information.
32 JPEG and MP3 F eatures General Information on CD-R and CD-R Ws ● When you mak e Picture CDs or MP3 CDs to pla y on this D VD Pla yer , the Disc should ha ve at least 6-10 pictures or 2-3 MP3 m usic files. Make sur e there is at least 3 MB (thr ee megabytes) of information on the Disc.
•D VDs only play in the format in which they were recorded. F or example, if the D VD case says the D VD is recorded in Letterbox or Widescr een f ormat, you may play the D VD only with the black bar s showing at the top and bottom of the widened picture.
34 Video Setup J ust as y ou can adjust your picture on y our TV , you can adjust some pictur e elements at the D VD Pla yer . Choose a picture setting that best displa ys the Disc y ou ar e playing. 1 Press SYSTEM MENU . 2 Press 2 to select the Video Setup Page.
TV T ype D VDs are recor ded according to a color system, the most common of which are NTSC and P AL. NTSC is the most common in the United States.Y our TV also operates according to a color system.
36 Do wnmix, Dual Mono Do wnmix Use the Speak er Setup Page to adjust some of the play er’ s audio settings. Adjust Downmix according to ho w you connected the Pla yer to your TV and/or Stereo . 1 Press SYSTEM MENU . 2 Press 2 to select the Speak er Setup Page, then press OK or 4 .
If you connected the D VD Pla yer to a Stereo using the CO AXIAL jack as shown on page 15, you need to adjust the SPDIF OUTPUT (digital audio) setting as described below . If you are not using the CO AXIAL jack, no adjustment is necessar y . 1 Press SY STEM MENU.
38 Equaliz er (EQ) T ype , Rev erb Mode Equalizer (EQ) T ype Select the EQ T ype that matches the type of music y ou play most often. These preset EQ T ype adjust the frequency bands of the audio to enhance y our fa vorite music style. Of course, if you var y y our music style frequently , the EQ T ype is easy to adjust.
Display Language , Closed Captions 39 Displa y Language Y ou can set the D VD Play er’ s Setup menus and on-screen messages to a ppear in English or Spanish. These are the only two languages a vailable . This language selection will not affect the languages of D VD Disc or Title menus or any audio , subtitle , or Closed Caption languages.
40 Screen Sav er , Angle Mark Screen Sa ver The Screen Sa ver is the moving D VD logo that appears on your TV screen when pla yback is stopped. It pre vents damage to your TV screen caused by lea ving a still image on the TV too long. 1 Press SYSTEM MENU .
D VD Pla yer Defaults To r estore the original settings of the D VD Play er , follow the steps below . 1 Press ST OP 7 twice to stop Disc pla yback completely . 2 Press SYSTEM MENU . 3 Press 2 to select the Prefer ence Page , then pr ess OK or 4 . 4 Press 4 to select Default.
42 Helpful Hints If you ar e having pr oblems with your pr oduct, check this list of problems and possible solutions before r equesting service . Y ou ma y be able to solve the pr oblem yourself. If you need to call a customer service repr esentative, please know the model number and serial n umber of y our product before y ou call.

Analog: Sound that has not been turned into numbers. Analog sound varies, while digital sound has specific n umerical values. Analog sound is available when y ou use the red and white audio jacks on y our equipment. These jacks send audio through tw o channels, the left and right.
