Wireless Network Access Point 3 Planning Y our Wireless Network Network T opology A wireless LAN is a group of computers, each equipped with one Instant W ireless™ Netw ork Card. Computers in a wireless LAN must be conf igured to share the same radio channel.
Instant Wireless TM Series Getting to Know the Wireless Network Access Point The ADSL Modem Router’ s Rear Panel Y our Access P oint’ s ports, where netw ork cables are connected , are located on the rear panel of your Access P oint.
Instant Wireless TM Series Connecting and Setting Up the Wireless Network Access Point 1. Locate an optimum location f or the Wir eless Netw ork Access P oint. The best place for your W ireless Netw ork Access P oint is usually at the center of your wireless netw ork, with line of sight to all of your mobile stations.
3. W indo ws will no w ask you w here to search for the dri ver softw are. Select Specify a location and type in the blank f ield D:W AP11WIN9X (where “D” specif ies y our CD-R OM). Then, click the Ne xt button. 4. W indo ws will no w search for the dri ver .
1. W indo ws 2000 will automaticall y identify the W ireless Network Access P oint, once it is connected to the PC, and prompt you to install the necessary driv er . Make sure that the Setup Utility CD is inserted into your CD-R OM driv e and click the Next button on the F ound Ne w Hard w ar e Wizard screen to proceed.
5. W indo ws will no w install the dri v er f iles. Click the Finish button w hen com- pleted. 6. Continue on to the Conf iguring the W ir eless Netw ork Access P oint sec- tion for software installation. 13 3. Under “Optional Search Locations”, select Specify a location and click the Next button.
Instant Wireless TM Series Configuring the Wireless Network Access Point The W ireless Netw ork Access P oint can be conf igured one of tw o wa ys, through the USB Utility or the Access P oint SNMP Conf iguration Utility .
5. The Choose Destination Location screen will show y ou the default desti- nation chosen by the utility . It is recommended that you lea v e the default des- tination, but if you w ant to install this in another location, click the Br o wse button and select an alternate destination.
• WEP . If y ou ha ve not enab led WEP encr yption, this will read Disab led. It will read Enabled w hen WEP encryption is in use. • Reconnect. If, for any reason, the USB connection to the W ireless Network Access P oint is disconnected , you can reconnect the USB cable and click the Reconnect button here.
21 20 THE AD V ANCED T AB Before making any changes to the Advanced tab, please check y our wireless settings on other systems, as these changes will alter the effecti v eness of the W ireless Netw ork Access Point. In most cases, these settings do not need to be changed.
• Oper ational Mode by default is set to Access P oint . This is for connecting your wireless PCs to a wired netw ork. In most cases, no change is necessary to this default setting. If you are trying to make a wireless con- nection betw een tw o wired netw orks, select Wir eless Bridg e .
THE SECURITY T AB WEP (W ired Equi valent Pri v acy) is a data pri v acy mechanism based on a 40 bit shared key algorithm, as described in the IEEE 802.11b standard. In order to utilize WEP encryption, all points in your wireless netw ork must ha ve WEP enabled and be set to the same Ke y Setting.
27 • WEP Ke y Setting . This setting will be the conf iguration key used in accessing the wireless netw ork via WEP encr yption. T o generate an encryp- tion key: 1. T ype e xactly the same case sensiti ve P assphrase in the PassPhrase f ield. F or security pur poses, please create your o wn P assphrase.
T o restore your temporary IP address conf iguration, follo w the steps belo w: 1. F ollo w steps 1 and 2 in the instructions abo ve. 2. Select either Specify an IP addr ess or Obtain IP address automaticall y and enter in the original values y ou noted earlier .
30 • Channel. The wireless channel shared by all wireless de vices connected to this Access P oint. • WEP . If y ou ha ve not enab led the WEP encr yption protocol, this will read Disabled. It will read Enab led when the WEP encr yption protocol is in use.

• Basic Rates. The basic transfer rates should be set depending on the speed of your wireless netw ork. Older, slo w er wireless netw orks should be set at 1-2 (Mbps) while a faster wireless netw ork should be set at 1-2-5.
• WEP Ke y Setting . This setting will be the conf iguration key used in accessing the wireless netw ork via WEP encr yption. T o generate an encryp- tion key: 1. T ype e xactly the same case sensiti ve P assPhrase in the PassPhrase f ield. 2. Click the Done button to create the encryption keys.
T o enab le MA C Address Filtering f ollo w these steps: 1. Cr eate a text file (e.g. MAC.TXT) using Notepad or another te xt editor . 2. Enter the 10 digit MA C address of each adapter that y ou wish to author- ize communication with the Access P oint.

What is DSSS? What is FHSS? And what ar e their differ ences? Frequenc y-hopping spread-spectrum (FHSS) uses a nar rowband carrier that changes frequency in a pattern that is kno wn to both transmitter and receiv er . Properly synchronized , the net ef fect is to maintain a single logical channel.
