Intr oduction Congratulations on your purchase of the Linksys HomeLink Phoneline + 10/100 Netw ork PC Card. This exciting new technolo gy is being offered in compliance with the standards of the Home Phoneline Netw orking Alliance (HomePN A).

Har dwar e Setup Before Y ou Begin The HomeLink Phoneline + 10/100 Netw ork PC Card is equipped with tw o phone wire ports, also known as RJ-11 ports, for use with a Phoneline netw ork that utilizes your e xisting telephone system. The card also has an RJ-45 10BaseT Ethernet por t for use with 10Mbps Ether net netw orks.
Installing the Hard ware 1. T urn off your PC and an y devices attached to it. 2. Snap the flat end of the media cou- pler into the HomeLink Phoneline +10/100 Netw ork PC Card. It should lock f irmly into place. 3. Locate your PC's card slot. The slot is usually located on the side or front of the PC.
Continue to connect up to tw enty-f iv e PCs on one chain. If you w ant to use your telephone or fax machine, add a tw o-wa y splitter on your w all’ s phone jack or connect the device to the open telephone port on the last card in your daisy chain.
About the Softwar e The HomeLink Phoneline + 10/100 Netw ork PC Card requires tw o dif ferent kinds of software in order to w ork: Socket and card ser vices are special software dri vers that allo w a PC card to communicate with your computer . Plug and Pla y operating systems like W indo ws 98 and 95 already ha ve these services built in.
Network Driver Setup F ollow these instructions carefull y . Y ou can vie w or print the setup directions from your fa vorite w ord processor , or if you prefer , use the reader that is included on the 10/100 card's disk. T o access the reader , put the HomeLink 10/100 PC Card disk into driv e A and r un the README.
W indows 9 8 Setup Boot up your Windo ws 98 PC with the HomeLink Phoneline + 10/100 PC Card hardware installed. F ollo w the instr uctions below . 1. W indo ws 98 will automatically detect the presence of the HomeLink Phoneline + 10/100 Netw ork PC Card in your computer .
4. A windo w will appear asking where y ou w ould like W indo ws 98 to search for the driv er . Make sure that Floppy disk drives is selected , and click Next to continue. 5. W indo ws will begin searching y our driv es for the cor rect device dri vers.
7. Double-click on the Netw ork icon. The Network windo w will appear . Click on the Conf iguration tab . 8. Make sure that the follo wing network components are installed: Client for Micr osoft Networ ks Linksys HomeLink + 10/100 PC Car d (PCM100TH) NetBEUI TCP/IP There ma y be other components listed in addition to the ones sho wn abo ve.
9. In the Primary Network Lo gon box, select Client for Micr osoft Networks . 10. Click on the Identif ication tab . T ype the name of your computer in the Computer name bo x. Make up a name that is unique from all the other computers' names on the netw ork.
page 14 15. Once W indo ws is done copying the necessary f iles, the System Settings Change windo w appears. Remo ve all disks from your computer and click on Ye s to restart your PC. If y ou don't see this windo w , simpl y close do wn W indo ws 98 and restart your computer .
Client Setup Before enabling F ile and Printer Sharing, you should prepare y our computer to be used with any f ile ser vers that ma y be on the network. T urn to the next page. If you are not using Windo ws 98 with an NT or NetW are f ile server , skip the next tw o parag raphs.
Preparing to Use File and Printer Sharing. The instructions below e xplain ho w to turn on f ile and printer sharing in W indo ws 98 so that your computer can be accessed b y others and vice-versa. 1. Start up W indows 98. If y ou are asked to lo g in, be sure to giv e your correct username and passw ord.
Use your mouse to select the type of f ile sharing access that you w ant other users to ha ve. If y ou want to assign access pass w ord(s), type them into the Pass w ord box(es).
W indows 95 Setup After installing the HomeLink Phoneline + 10/100 Netw ork PC Card hardw are in your computer , follo w the instr uctions belo w to install the HomeLink Phoneline + 10/100 Netw ork PC Card's W indo ws 95 netw ork driv er from the card's program disk.
3. W indo ws will begin searching y our driv es for the cor rect device dri vers. A message will appear that reads W indows f ound the Linksys HomeLink + 10/100 PC Car d (PCM100H1) driver . Click on Finish . If W indo ws cannot f ind the driv er for the card , skip to the T roubleshooting sec- tion on page 51.
7. Double-click on the Netw ork icon. The Network windo w will appear . Click on the Conf iguration tab . 8. Make sure that the follo wing network components are installed: Client for Micr osoft Netwo.

W indows NT 4.0 Setup The instructions below e xplain ho w to install HomeLink Phoneline + 10/100 Netw ork PC Card's softw arer driv ers for an NT 4.0 ser ver/w orkstation. Y ou must know the type of PCMCIA controller that y ou ha ve in y our notebook -- PCIC compatible or CardBus.
Install NT Networking and the HomeLink Phoneline + 10/100 Network PC Car d T ogether 1. Choose W ired to the Netw or k and click Next . 2. When asked to pro vide the name of the network adapter , choose Select from list... 3. When the list appears, click on the Ha v e Disk button.
6. Setup ma y need to cop y some W indo ws NT f iles from your original W indo ws NT CD-R OM. If a windo w appears asking for your NT setup f iles, type in the location of your Windo ws NT CD-R OM. F or example, if y our CD- R OM is designated as D: , then type D:i386 .
When the Netw ork Setup W izard reappears, conf igure your bindings. See y our W indo ws NT User Guide for more information on bindings. 11. When the bindings are conf igured , click Next , follo w ed by Ne xt again to start the network. 12. When the Netw ork W izard windo w reappears, enter a name for your com- puter .
Install the HomeLink Phoneline + 10/100 Network PC Car d (NT Networking is Alread y Installed) 1. When the Netw ork windo w appears, click on the Adapters tab . 2. Click on the Add button, follo wed b y Ha ve Disk . Put the PC Card disk into driv e A.
If Y ou Have Pr oblems If the EtherF ast card's coupler doesn't light up after you restart your computer , you ma y need to change your slot's boot setting in NT . F ollo w these instruc- tions: Click on Start , Settings , Control P anel .
Changing the Car d Settings F or most users, the HomeLink def ault settings will be perfect for both Phoneline and Ethernet networking. Ho w ev er , you can make an y necessary changes to your system's netw ork settings by clicking on y our taskbar's Start button, then Settings , then Contr ol Panel , and then the Netw ork icon.
Ethernet Configuration This option allo ws you to choose the duple x and speed performance of the HomeLink Card’ s RJ-45 Ether net port. In order to change the por t settings, the Mode Selection option must be set at 10BaseT Only , or 10/100BaseTX Only , or the mode must be set at A uto Detect with a valid link on the 10BaseT P or t.
Mode Selection Y ou can set the HomeLink Phoneline + 10/100 Network PC Card to default to either a 10BaseT connection or Phoneline connection. Since there are three ports, the card is set to A uto Detect an acti ve connection.
Phoneline Configuration Y ou can set the Phoneline por t to operate in several dif ferent modes. The phoneline port will def ault to A uto Conf ig mode.
T wisted-Pair Cabling There are different grades, or categories, of twisted-pair cab ling. Category 5 is the most reliable and widel y compatible, and is highly recommended. Cate gory 3 is a good second choice. Straight-through cables are used for connecting computers to a hub .
T elephone Cable The telephone cables y ou use can be either crossed o ver or straight-through. Standard telephone cables lik e the ones you use e veryday in y our home should do the job . Note : If you are onl y sharing Inter net access between 2 PCs, y ou can connect your modem directl y to your HomeLink Card using a standard telephone cable.
T r oubleshooting T r oubleshooting Hints for Windows Pr oblem : W indo ws doesn't detect ne w hardware with the HomeLink Card hardware installed , or it continues to detect the card each time I restart the PC. Solutions Y ou might not hav e inser ted the PCMCIA card cor rectly or securel y into the appropriate slot of your computer .
V erify that the HomeLink Card’ s Phoneline conf iguration is set to Auto Conf iguration. See the chapter entitled Changing the Card Settings on page xx for instructions on how to do this. T ry connecting your PCs using only the phone wire pro vided with the HomeLink card.
If all computers are using the same protocol(s) and W orkgroup name, and W indo ws 95 computers can't see W indo ws 98 computers, enable NetBIOS on all the computers using W indo ws 95 and 98. IPX/SPX-compatible Protocol should be installed on all computers.
Multiple Network PC Car ds The follo wing information is supplied to you f or r efer ence only . Linksys does not pro vide technical suppor t on the setup or troubleshooing of multiple Netw ork PC Cards or enabling or setup of routing in an operating sys- tem.
Using a Cable Modem or DSL Modem and the HomeLink PC Car d If you are currently using a HomeLink Phoneline + 10/100 Netw ork PC Card with a cable or DSL modem, it is recommended that y ou connect your cab le modem to a 10BaseT/100BaseTX hub for faster access speeds.
Linux, Open Sour ce and Beta Operating Systems Linksys does not pro vide technical suppor t for Linux , *BSD , or other freew are and open source operating systems. Although many Linksys products ha ve been pro ven to perfor m w ell under Linux and other freew are OSes, technical support for setup and troubleshooting is not pro vided.
Manually Installing the Network Components in W indows There ma y be times when y ou might need to manually install missing Windo ws netw orking components. 1. Click on Start , Settings , then Control P anel . 2. Double-click the Netw ork icon. The Network windo w appears.
Adding Client f or Netware Networks If you plan on connecting to a No vell NetW are w orkstation, click on the Add button. Highlight Client and click on Add . In the Netw ork Client window , select Manufactur er and choose Micr osoft . Click OK . Adding IPX/SPX-compatible Pr otocol Click on the Add button.
How to Use the HomeLink 10/100 Notebook Netw ork Card's Generic Services Under DOS-Based Systems The software disk pro vided with the HomeLink Phoneline + 10/100 Netw ork PC Card includes generic socket and card services that can be used to enable the card.
Enabling PCMCIA Services in Windo ws NT T o enab le card and socket services in NT , click on Start , Settings , Contr ol P anel . Double click on De vices . Scroll do wn the list until you f ind PCMCIA . Highlight it and click Startup and choose Boot from the options.
