Planning Y our Network Building a Gigabit netw ork in volv es more topology rules in addition to the 10BaseT/100Base-TX netw ork rules. These r ules specify distance limitations and cabling specif ications. Data loss, collisions, and other network prob lems causing do wn time are likel y to occur if the rules below are not follo w ed.

Installing the EtherFast ® 10/100/1000 8+1 Workgroup GigaSwitch Star ter Kit onto Y o u r Network Installing your Starter Kit will in volv e installing both the Adapter and the GigaSwitch. If you are inte grating these items into an existing new ork, some additional steps ma y be necessary inv olving settings for your e xisting equip- ment.
Connecting Computers T o Y our Switch Y our Switch’ s rear panel has eight standard RJ-45 ports, plus a Gigabit port. Each 10/100 port automatically detects the speed and duplex of the attached cabling to a netw ork card , switch, hub, etc.
Installing the Drivers for Windows 95 After installing the Instant Gigabit Netw ork Adapter in your computer , follo w these instructions for installing the network dri v- er . The installation procedure for the net- w ork dri ver will v ar y slightl y depending on the version of Windo ws 95 you are using and your current system conf iguration.
3. If you click ed the Other Locations button, this windo w will appear . Enter a:win95 . W indo ws will begin cop ying the Netw ork Adapter’ s driv er f iles to your PC. 4. Once W indo ws has located the driv ers, the follo wing windo w will appear .

6. A windo w will open saying that W indo ws is no w ready to install the Linksys EG1032/EG1064 Instant Giga bit Networ k Adapter driv er . Click Next . 7. W indo ws will begin cop ying the Instant Gigabit Netw ork Adapter’ s driv er f iles to your PC.
Installing the Drivers for Windows Millennium After ph ysically installing the Instant Gigabit Netw ork Adapter in your com- puter , follo w these instructions to install the network dri ver . The installation procedure for the netw ork dri ver will depend on your current system conf igu- ration.
6. At this point, the installation ma y require f iles from your W indo ws Millennium CD-R OM. If prompted , inser t your W indo ws Millennium CD- R OM into your CD-R OM driv e and enter d:win9x in the box that appears (where “d” is the letter of y our CD-R OM dri ve).
Windows NT 4.0 Installation & Setup The follo wing instructions will set up the Instant Gigabit Network Adapter in a computer running NT 4.0 ser ver/w orkstation. Y ou should ha ve y our original W indo ws NT CD-R OM a v ailable during the installation, as you might be ask ed to supply it.
5. Highlight the Linksys EG1032/EG1064 Instant Gigabit Netw ork Adapter entr y in the window that appears. Click OK . 6. The adapter will be added to the list of installed Network Adapters. Click Next . 1. After clicking on Ye s , the Networ k Setup W izard window will appear .
9. NT will probab l y ask you to suppl y your original Windo ws NT CD-R OM or setup disks. If so, place your Windo ws NT CD-R OM in y our CD driv e. If the CD-R OM loads a pop-up window , close it. T ype D:i386 (or the appropriate CD-R OM dri ve letter) in the box and click Continue .
13. Click Finish . When asked if you w ant to restar t your computer , remo ve the Driv er Disk and click Ye s . 14. Once your PC has rebooted and y ou are lo gged in, double-click the Netw ork Neighborhood icon on y our desktop. Ensure that you ha ve access to the netw ork.
3. When the list of a vailab le netw ork adapters appears, click the Ha v e Disk but- ton. 4. Put the Instant Gigabit Netw ork Adapter disk into driv e A.
8. Click on the Pr otocols tab . Add any protocols y ou require by clicking the Add button. (Refer to y our Microsoft documentation if you ha ve any ques- tions on adding protocols.) 9. After your bindings, settings, and services are set, click the Close button.
3. Windo ws will displa y the W elcome to the F ound New Har dwar e W izar d box. Click Ne xt . 4. The Install Hardw are Device Driv ers dialog bo x will appear . Whe n Ethernet Contr oller is displa yed , select “Searc h for a suita ble driver f or my device (Recommended)” .
6. The Driver F ile Search Results dialo g bo x will appear . Click Ne xt . 7. The Completing the F ound New Hardw are Wizard dialog bo x will appear . The follo wing adapter name will be sho wn: Linksys EG1032/EG1064 Instant Giga bit Networ k Adapter .
Netw ork Addr ess: Allo ws the user to conf igure the network address of the adapter , rather than using the one in R OM. If not specif ied , the address on the adapter will be used. Netw ork Media: Specif ies the maximum speed at which the adapter will try to negotiate a connection.
2. The Netw ork windo w will appear (belo w). Click on the Conf iguration tab . A window similar to the one belo w will appear . There ma y be other components listed in addition to the ones sho wn belo w (for example, Dial- up Adapter ), which is normal.
11. Optional : Choose the Access Contr ol tab . Ensure that Shar ed-level access contr ol is selected. If the setting is on User- Lev el access control and you can’ t change it, skip to the Troub leshooting section .
Appendix Overview By sharing your f iles and printers, other PCs on y our network will be ab le to access the resources on your PC. Before sharing your f iles and printers, you should prepare y our computer to be used with any f ile servers that ma y be on the netw ork.
1. Windo ws 95 will detect the Instant Gigabit Netw ork Adapter and displa y a New Har dwar e F ound windo w . 2. Insert the Instant Gigabit Netw ork Adapter Driv er Disk into driv e A. 3. Select Driver from disk pr o vided by har dw ar e manufactur er , then click OK .
If you e xperience installation diff iculties, you ma y need to re-install all of the W indo ws netw orking components from scratch. The instr uctions belo w explain ho w to gi ve your PC a clean s weep so that y ou can retr y the Instant Gigabit Netw ork Adapter software installation.

F or PCs with Dial-Up Netw orking and/or an A OL adapter , remo ve an y instance of the name Linksys, all IPX/SPX protocols, all NetBEUI, all Clients, and File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Netw orks. Do not remo ve Dial-Up Adapter , A OL Adapter , TCP/IP-Compatible Pr otocol-A OL Adapter or TCP/IP-Compatible Pr otocol-Dial-Up Adapter .
1. Click the Start button, choose Settings, choose Control Panel, then double- click the System icon.The System Properties window will open. 2. Choose the Hardware tab . 3. Click the De vice Manager button. The De vice Manager windo w will open. 4. Click the plus sign (+) beside Netw ork Adapters.
8. Right-click on Linksys EG1032/EG1064 Instant Giga bit Networ k Adapter again. This time, select Uninstall . Click OK . 9. The Netw ork Adapters category should be remo ved from the De vice Manager listing. 10. Click the OK button, and restart your computer .
IPX/SPX-compatible Protocol Click the Add button. Choose Pr otocol and click the Add button. Select Manufactur er and choose Micr osoft . Under the Networ k Pr otocol box, high- light IPX/SPX-compatible pr otocol . If you are done installing components, click OK .
When a PCI card is used in a computer that supports Plug-and-Play , the card is automatically conf igured each time the computer is booted. The card's IRQ, I/O address, and other operating parameters are automatically assigned.
Troubleshooting This section pro vides possible solutions to problems re garding the installation and operation of the Instant Gigabit Netw ork Adapter .
10. In Network Neighborhood you can only see computers running the same oper- ating system as your computer (i.e ., your PC is running Windo ws 95 and it can only see other Windows 95 computers and not any computer running Windows 98).

IPCONFIG - A W indo ws NT or 2000 utility that pro vides for querying, def in- ing and managing IP addresses within a netw ork. A commonly used utility for conf iguring networks with static IP addresses.
STP (Shielded T wisted Pair) - T elephone wire that is wrapped in a metal sheath to eliminate external interference. Subnet Mask - The method used for splitting IP networks into a series of sub- groups, or subnets.
