Chapter 2 Inst allation 2 This Chapter covers the physical installation of the Wireless Broad- band router. Requirements • Network cables. Use standard 10/100BaseT network (UTP) cables with RJ45 connectors. • TCP/IP protocol must be installed on all PCs.

Chapter 3 Setup This Chapter provides Setup details of the Wireless Broadband router. Overview This chapter describes the setup procedure for: • Internet Access • LAN configuration • Wireless setup • Assigning a Password to prot ect the configuration data.
Wireless Broadband router User Guide Configuration Program The Wireless Broadband router contains an H TTP server. This enables you to con- nect to it, and configure it, using your Web Browser. Your Brow ser must support JavaScript . The configuration program has been tested on the following browsers: • Netscape V4.
Setup If you can't connect If the Wireless Broadband router does not respond, check the following: • The Wireless Broadband router is properly installed, LAN connection is OK, and it is powered ON. You can test the connection by using the "Ping" command: • Open the MS-DOS window or command prompt window.
Wireless Broadband router User Guide Setup Wizard The first time you connect to the Wirele ss Broadband router, the Setup Wizard will run automatically. (The Setup Wizard will al so run if the Wireless Broadband router's default settings are restored.
Setup PPTP PPTP is mainly used in Europe. You connect to the ISP only when required. The IP address is usually allocated automatically, but may be Static (Fixed). • Server IP Address. • User name and pass- word. • IP Address allocated to you, if Static (Fixed).

Setup To Configure your PCs to use DHCP This is the default setting for TCP/IP under Windows 98/ME. See Chapter 4 - Client Configuration for the procedure to check these settings.
Wireless Broadband router User Guide Wireless Screen The Wireless Broadband router's settings must match the other Wireless stations. Note that the Wireless Broadband router will automatically accept both 802.11b and 802.11g connections, and no configuration is required for this feature.
Setup SSID • If using an ESS (Extended Service Set, with multiple access points) this ID is called an ESSID (Extended Service Set Identifier). • To communicate, all Wireless stations should use the same SSID/ESSID. Options Mode Select the desired mode: • g & b - Both 802.

PC Configuration Wireless Station Configuration This section applies to all Wireless stations wishing to use the Wireless Broadband router's Access Point, regardless of the oper ating system which is used on the client.
5 Chapter 5 Operation and S t atus This Chapter details the operati on of the Wireless Broadband router and the status screens. Operation Once both the Wireless Broadband router and the PCs are configured, opera- tion is automatic.
Operation and Status Status Screen Use the Status link on the main menu to view this screen. Figure 20: Status Screen Data - Status Screen Internet Connection Method This indicates the current connection method, as set in the Setup Wizard or WAN Port screen.

Wireless Broadband router User Guide Connection Log Connection Log • The Connection Log shows status messages relating to the existing connection. • The "Clear Log" button will restart the Log, while the Re- fresh button will update the messages shown on screen.
Operation and Status IP Address The IP Address of this device, as seen by Internet users. This address is allocated by your I SP (Internet Service Provider). Connection Status This indicates whether or not the connection is currently estab- lished. • If the connection does not exist, the Connect button can be used to establish a connection.

6 Chapter 6 Advanced Features This Chapter explains when and how to use the Wireless Broadband router's "Advanced" Features. Overview The following advanced features are provided.
Wireless Broadband router User Guide Access Control Screen To view this screen, select the Access Control link on the Advanced menu. Figure 27: Access Control Screen Data - Access Control Screen User Group Group Select the desired Group. The screen will update to display the settings for the selected Group.
Advanced Features Internet Access Restrictions Select the desired options for the current group: • None - Nothing is blocked. Use this to create the least restrictive group. • Block all Internet access - All traffic via the WAN port is blocked. Use this to create the most restrictive group.
Wireless Broadband router User Guide Group Members Screen This screen is displayed when the Members button on the Access Control screen is clicked. Figure 28: Group Members Use this screen to add or remove members (PCs) from the current group.
Advanced Features Default Schedule Screen This screen is displayed when the Define Schedule button on the Access Control screen is clicked. • This schedule can be (optionally) app lied to any Access Control Group. • Blocking will be performed during the scheduled time (between the "Start" and "Finish" times.

Advanced Features Access Control Log To check the operation of t he Access Control feature, an Access Control Log is pro- vided. Click the View Log button on the Access Control screen to view this log. This log shows attempted Internet accesses which have been blocked by the Access Control function.
Wireless Broadband router User Guide Dynamic DNS (Domain Name Server) This free service is very useful when combined with the Virtual Server feature. It allows Internet users to c onnect to your Virtual Servers using a URL, rather than an IP Address. This also solves the problem of having a dynamic IP address.
Advanced Features Data - Dynamic DNS Screen DDNS Data DDNS Service Select the desired DDNS Service provider. To disable DDNS, select "None". Web Site Button Click this button to open a new window and connect to the Web site for the selected DDNS service provider.
Wireless Broadband router User Guide Advanced Internet Screen This screen allows configuration of all advanc ed features relating to Internet access. • Communication Applications • Special Applications • Multi-DMZ • URL Filter An example screen is shown below.
Advanced Features Send incoming calls to This lists the PCs on your LAN. • If necessary, you can add PCs manually, using the "PC Database" option on the advanced menu. • For each application listed above, you can choose a destination PC.

Advanced Features Data - Special Applications Screen Name Enter a descriptive name to ident ify this Special Application. Incoming Ports • Type - Select the protocol (TCP or UDP) used when you receive data from the special application or service. (Note: Some applica- tions use different protocols for outgoing and incoming data).
Wireless Broadband router User Guide • Enable this DMZ. If you have multiple Internet IP addre sses, you can assign one DMZ PC for each Internet IP address. If you only have 1 WAN IP address, only "DMZ 1" can be used, and only one (1) PC can be the DMZ PC.
Advanced Features Data - URL Filter Screen Filter Strings Current Entries This lists any existing entries . If you have not entered any val- ues, this list will be empty. Add Filter String To add an entry to the list, enter it here, and click the "Add" button.
Wireless Broadband router User Guide Virtual Servers This feature, sometimes called Port Forwarding , allows you to make Servers on your LAN accessible to Internet users. Normally , Internet users would not be able to ac- cess a server on your LAN because: • Your Server does not have a valid external IP Address.
Advanced Features Figure 36: Virtual Servers Screen This screen lists a number of pre-defined Serv ers, and allows you to define your own Servers. Details of the selected Server are shown in the "Properties" area. Data - Virtual Servers Screen Servers Servers This lists a number of pre-defi ned Servers, plus any Servers you have defined.
Wireless Broadband router User Guide Defaults This will delete any Servers you have defined, and set the pre-defined Servers to use their default port numbers. Disable All This will cause the "Enable" setting of all Virtual Servers to be set OFF.
Advanced Features Connecting to the Virtual Servers Once configured, anyone on the Internet can connect to your Virtual Servers. They must use the Internet IP Address (the IP Address allocated to you by your ISP). e.g. http://203.70.212.52 ftp://203.70.
Wireless Broadband router User Guide WAN Port Configuration The WAN Port option is on the Advanced menu. Figure 37: WAN Port Screen Data - WAN Port Screen Identification Hostname Normally, there is no need to change the default name, but if your ISP requests that you use a particular Hostname, enter it here.
Advanced Features IP Address IP Address is assigned automatically Also called Dynamic IP Address. This is the default, and the most common. Leave this selected if your ISP allocates an IP Address to the Wireless Broadband router upon connection. Specified IP Address Also called Static IP Address.
Wireless Broadband router User Guide Login Login Method If your ISP does not use a login method (username, password) for Internet access, leave this at the default value None (Di- rect connection) . Otherwise, check the documentation from your ISP, select the login me thod used, and enter the required data.
Advanced Features Auto-disconnect Idle Time-out This field has no effect unless using the Automatic Con- nect/Disconnect setting. If using this setting, enter t he desired idle time-out period (in minutes). After the connection to your ISP has been idle for this time period, the connection will be terminated.
7 Chapter 7 Advanced Administration This Chapter explains the settings available via the "Administration" section of the menu. Overview Normally, it is not necessary to use these screens, or change any settings.
Advanced Administration Config File This feature allows you to download the current settings from the Wireless Broadband router, and save them to a file on your PC. You can restore a previously-downloaded c onfiguration file to the Wireless Broadband router, by uploading it to the Wireless Broadband router.
Wireless Broadband router User Guide Logs The Logs record various types of activi ty on the Wireless Broadband router. This data is useful for troubleshooting, but enabling all logs will generate a large amount of data and adversely affect performance.
Advanced Administration Clear Log button Use this to restart the required log. This makes it easier to read the latest entries. E-Mail Logs Send E-mail alert If enabled, an E-mail will be sent immediately if a DoS (Denial of Service) attack is detected.
Wireless Broadband router User Guide Network Diagnostics This screen allows you to perform a "Ping" or a "DNS lookup". These activities can be useful in solving network problems. An example Network Diagnostics screen is shown below.
Advanced Administration Lookup Button After entering the Domain name/URL, click this button to start the "DNS Lookup" procedure. The results will be displayed in the DNS Lookup Results pane.
Wireless Broadband router User Guide Options This screen allows advanced users to ent er or change a number of settings. For normal operation, there is no need to use this screen or change any settings.
Advanced Administration Allow Configu- ration... • If checked, then UPnP users can change the configuration. • If Disabled, UPnP users can onl y view the configuration. But currently, this restriction only applies to users running Win- dows XP, who access the Properties via UPnP.
Wireless Broadband router User Guide PC Database The PC Database is used whenever you need to select a PC (e.g. for the "DMZ" PC). It eliminates the need to enter IP addresse s. Also, you do not need to use fixed IP addresses on your LAN. PC Database Screen An example PC Database screen is shown below.
Advanced Administration Data - PC Database Screen Know n PCs This lists all current entries (PCs or network devices). Name If adding a new PC to the list, enter its name here. It is best if this matches the PC's "hostname". IP Address If adding a new PC to the list, enter the IP Address of the PC here.

Advanced Administration IP Address Select the appropriate option: • Automatic - The PC is set to be a DHCP client (Windows: "Obtain an IP address automatically"). The Wireless Broad- band router will allocate an IP address to this PC when requested to do so.

Advanced Administration Remote Admin If enabled, this feature allows you to manage the Wireless Broadband router via the Internet. Wireless Broadband router User Guide • Have your ISP allocate you a Fixed IP address. • Use the DDNS feature (A dvanced menu) so you can connect using a Domain Name, rather than an IP address. To connect from a remote PC via the Internet 1. Ensure your Internet connection is established, and start your Web Browser.
Advanced Administration Routing Overview • If you don't have other Broadband routers or Gateways on your LAN, you can ignore the "Routing" page completely. • If the Wireless Broadband router is only acting as a Gateway for the local LAN segment, ignore the "Routing" page ev en if your LAN has other Broadband routers.

Advanced Administration Properties • Destination IP Address - The network address of the remote LAN segment. For standard class "C" LANs, the network address is the first 3 fi elds of the Destination IP Address. The 4th (last) field can be left at 0.

Advanced Administration Options Respond to ICMP The ICMP protocol is used by t he "ping" and "trace route" pro- grams, and by network monitoring and diagnostic programs. • If checked, the Broadband VPN Broadband router will respond to ICMP packets received from the Internet.
Wireless Broadband router User Guide Upgrade Firmware The firmware (software) in the Wire less Broadband router can be upgraded using your Web Browser. You must first download the upgrade file, then select Upgrade on the Administration menu. You will see a screen like the following.

Appendix B About Wireless LANs B This Appendix provides some background information about using Wireless LANs (WLANs). Modes Wireless LANs can work in either of two (2) modes: • Ad-hoc • Infrastructure Ad-hoc Mode Ad-hoc mode does not require an Access Po int or a wired (Ethernet) LAN.
