1 ABOUT THIS GUIDE Congratulatio ns on your purchase of LevelOne GSW-4870TG X, 48+4G-Po rt 10/100/100 0Mbps Gigabit Eth ernet Web Smart Swi tch. This device integrates 1000Mbps Gigabit Ethernet, 100 Mbps Fast Ethernet and 10Mbps Ethernet network capab ilities in a highly flexible package.
.
3 INTRODUCTION This chapter describes th e features of the GSW-4870TGX , 48+4G- Port 10/1 00/1000Mbp s Gigabit Ethernet Web Sm art Switch, a nd som e background information abou t Ethernet/Fast Ethernet/Gigabit Ethernet switching t echnology . Gigabit Ethernet Technology Gigabit Ethernet is an extension of IEEE 802.
4 In addition, the phenomenal bandwid th delivered by Gigabit Ethernet is the most cost -effective m ethod to tak e advantage of t oday and tomorro w’s rapidly improvi ng switchi ng and ro uting inte rnetworkin g technologies.
5 Switching Technology Another a pproach to p ushing beyo nd the lim its of Ethe rnet technolo gy is the develo pment of swi tching technol ogy. A switc h bridges Ethernet packet s at the MAC address level of the Et hernet protoc ol transmitti ng among connec ted Ethernet or Fast Ethernet L AN segments.
6 VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) A VLAN is a group of e nd-stations that a re not constrai ned by t heir physical location and can communicate as if a c ommon broadcast domain, a LAN. The primary utility of using VLAN is to reduce latency and need for rout ers, using fast er switching instead.
7 Up to 4K unicast addresses en tities per device, self-learning, and table aging 1536K Bytes packet buffer Supports IEEE 802.3x flow c ontrol fo r full-duplex mode ports Supports Back.

9 UNPACKING AND INSTALLATIO N This chapter provides unp acking and installation in formation for GSW-4870T GX. Unpacking Open the shipping cartons of the Switch and carefully unpacks its contents.
Leave at least 10cm of space at th e front and rear of the hub for ventilation. Install the Switch on a sturdy, level surface that can support its weight, or in an E IA standard-si ze equipm en t rack. For inform ation on rack installation, see the nex t section, Rack Mounting .
11 Connecting Network Cable The Switch supp orts 10Mbps Ether net or 100Mbp s Fast Ethernet and it runs both in half and f ull duple x mode us ing two pair of Ca tegory 5 cable.
.
IDENTIFYING EXTERNAL COMP ONENTS This chapter describes the front pa nel, rear pa nel, and LED i ndicators of GSW-4870TGX. Front Panel The figure below shows the fron t panels of GSW-4870TGX.
mini-GBIC Ports (Por t 51~52): GSW-4870TGX is equipped with two mini-GBIC por ts, supported optional 1000BASE-SX/LX mini-GBIC module. Note: When the port was set to “Forced Mode ”, the Auto MDI/MDIX will be disabled. Reset: The Reset butto n is to rese t all the setting back to the factory default.
UNDERSTANDING LED INDI CATORS The front panel LEDs provides inst ant status feedback, and, helps monitor an d troubles hoot when neede d. Figure 5. LED indicat o rs of the Swit ch Power and System LEDs POWER: Power Indicator On : When the Power LED lights on, the Switch is receiving power.
16 Ports 1~48 10/100M Status LEDs Link/ACT: Link/Activity On : When the Link/ACT LED lights on, the respective port is successfully connected to an Ethernet network. Blinking : When the Link/ACT LED is blinking, the port is transmitting or receiving data on the Ethernet network.
17 Ports 51~ 52 mini-GBIC Status LEDs Link/ACT: Link/Activity On : When the mini-GBIC m odule is in stalled and connected to a networ k, the Link/ACT LED lights on. Blinking : W hen the LED is blinking, the mini-GBIC module is receiving data on a network.
